The Smokey Deal 174

After some confusion about Smokey, here is what Mitch from postersandtoys said in the comments to explain the situation…

Yeah, you're right. This all didn't quite work out how I envisioned it. I should have used a different item number. Since the price change wasn't visible to people, it did seem like kind of a sour deal, so I will be refunding the people that paid $300 their extra $100. Sorry about that, and hopefully my mistake doesn't reflect badly on Ken, I just honestly didn't forsee the in-cart price switch, and how it would work. I thought people would see the price change to $300, then make a decision. My apologies guys, sorry.

Wow, what a smoking deal with smokey, $300???

Spy Hill Skates said...

So how much was it?

Eugene said...

FFrom last post...

@OMG Mitch. Thanks for fixing this for people and my apologies if I sounded harsh. I certainly did not mean to be. Cheers. Poster sale day here is always hellish.

Unknown said...

@Spy Hill Skates - the first ones were $200, when those sold they were $300. Due to complaints Mitch has been exceptionally responsive, thus the comment he posted.

I am typing up info relating to LU for you guys now - though I think I may have to put it in a public LJ post instead since it's a lot of text. Have the first five pages of the Dean's List as visible to me, maybe we can compile a proper list of where people are on it using that. It's a bit inaccurate, text displays strangely on my non-HDTV and is difficult to read. Haven't done the other ten pages of the list as a result :P

As far as I can tell everyone sees themselves at the top - but there is no way to scroll backwards on my list, anyway, from the first page.

Amy Lynn said...

I can scroll all the way down.

DvdBos said...

Congrats to Mitch.
I think that Walt's will be sold at 150$.
Pretty fair price.

Jason McCarley said...

hmmm 150 would b nice

Limbofunk said...

It was an experimental process that didn't pan out as well as originally thought: you really can't hold someone in a negative light, especially when they rectify the situation so promptly. Congrats to everyone who managed to snag this poster, and good luck to those who are going after some of the others!

Sandman90 said...

I saw someone mention WK would go up on Monday - can anyone substantiate this?

thorsten said...

No, Sandman. I had an email earlier today by Drew and he said they will be going on sale at www.postersandtoys.com within the next few weeks.

DvdBos said...

Thorsten, is your email with multiple accounts at 10.58 GMT?
If so, i may have your email :D

Sandman90 said...

Thorsten - Thanks for clearing that up.

Wow. 6 more inches of snow last night. Temp at -4 degrees in KC with windchill of -28. Some college kids looking for cash just shoveled my driveway. Awesome. Now I can continue the LOST rewatch. Behind schedule.

I have the same problem on my non HD TV. If you adjust the sharpness, brightness, and contrast it helps make it easier to read.

Jawapez said...

Mitch refunded the extra $100 to me. Thanks Mitch!

I mentioned earlier that Walt is going on sale Monday because I thought I read that in some previous comments. My apologies if I perpetuated something false.

We're getting your snow here in Ohio. Been snowing all day and still snowing. We've got about 3" right now.

There was a bad accident in the Springfield area (near Dayton) a semi hit a van carrying adult developmental students some in wheelchairs. Four were killed.

Martyn said...

Ok, feel a little better now, hopefully have bagged WK but have to wait for the auction to end to know for sure, and trying to haggle with a member on EB to lower their $100 value of I Kill The Bus Driver print.

Saying that, I looked at a couple of bidding lists on eBay and I see a few 0 rating bidders. Now, it could be just people who never had to use eBay before these posters were around but I get the feeling that some of them are just created by the seller to bump the value up to what they want.

Then again, I could be wrong. Nobody better outbid me though, refuse to give a minor whiff of which auction i'm bidding on.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

wow, looks like I missed alot while being out. Glad Mitch refunded people that paid more.

thorsten said...

Mitch was helpful from the beginning, and he is a standup guy. Let's move on, folks.

Drama said...

Martyn... bad news I'm afraid. The best way to keep an auction's value low is not to bid until the last minute. With three days left, someone is sure to put something in. I'd be prepared to go higher :(

Don't worry - I'm staying away from it!

Richrootes said...

Hey Mitch - do you have access to the stats to see how many people tried and failed?

It'll give the rest of us some idea of how worthwhile this whole deal is - if there are tens of thousands trying, there's literally no way I'm going to waste any more time on this poster lark!

Cheers

ChrisL said...

Well that was quite a day. May I just add my own thanks to Mitch for spotting that there was an issue and rather than simply taking the money and running doing right by those feeing aggrieved.

Congratulations too to those who managed to grab a Smokey. You did REALLY well. Always a shame to see them up on eBay so quickly but that's the nature of the beast we've come to love/hate I guess.

And while Zort couldn't have anticipated such hectic times prior to heading off to (slightly) warmer climes, he left us all in very good hands. Thanks Thorsten and Maven for keeping it all together this week, in at the DEEP end!

Here's to a quiet Friday... unless I've missed something?

Eugene said...

Good luck Martyn!

ChrisL said...

Yes Martyn, good luck. It'll make my damn day when you finally bag a WK!

Martyn said...

@Ben...

Not sure how you figured out which one I was bidding on but still. Yes, i'm a seasoned eBay assassin, as I call them anyway, but i've been watching a lot of auctions for this print and have put a suitable max bid which i'm confident it won't exceed. I had to be the first to whack it up to $150 because that's where the auctions seem to freeze at the moment and what with announcement of re-releases too, should be safe I think.

Yes, i've been doing my homework.

Thanks Eugene, I need all the luck I can get!

Sandman90 said...

@Sayid's girl - tragic what the bad weather can do. The 30mph winds right now makes it bitterly cold and terrible to keep the roads clear.

Hopefully, Mitch will keep us up to date on the WK sale. Stay warm everybody and hope this winter storm doesn't hit you - they're telling us the electric may go down here tonight because our power grid isn't designed to deal with sustained supra-subzero temps. Hope they're wrong. Geez, I miss Nashville.

Joe D said...

If I were going the ebay route on any of these posters, I wouldn't post on ANY site about it until the auction is done. On a vaguely related note, there is a WK on ebay right now that has a pic showing addressed poster tubes! Why would somebody show there address on an ebay auction?

Martyn said...

@ChrisL...

Is that because i'll shut up about it by any chance?

Joe D said...

*or even "their" address!!

And martyn, I wish you luck. I think buying it before the artist 50 go on sale is a great idea

ChrisL said...

Martyn ;-)

Martyn said...

@JoeD...

Talking about it is me trying a new positive approach to life. I'm apparently too negative so if I am conifident and positive, posting about the fact i'm bidding shouldn't make a difference.

Apparently.

@ChrisL...

Then it'll be a grand day for the both of us then, lol. I can't wait to shut up either and just admire like I do my others. I did just scare myself though thinking that I own 6 of the 16 poster series, when I only intended to get the Dharma Van.

Strange how things work out.

DvdBos said...

I only wanted Smokey, and i've finished with 5 posters.... and not Smokey.

Very strange.

Sam G said...

Kind of happy to be out of the madness, I still enjoy the excitement of it all.

ChrisL said...

Don't think I can remember you being anything but positive Martyn... And if you can do that here with everything we've been through then the rest of life? No Problemo.

JGZ350 said...

So, no other artist is dropping their prints on Friday? What print is next for the second chance gouging, errr offering?

Martyn said...

Thank you Chris, first person to say i'm positive and you make a very good point. I just need to envisage everything I want from life as a LOST poster and i'll be determined as hell to get it.

Seriously, i'm going to try it tomorrow, have to write a postgraduate application form, I mean write why I must have Walt's Kidnapping.

Patmc said...

@Maven - It's in 72 degrees here today too. But to be fair, it's all the way down to 71 degrees with the windchill... ;-) They don't call it "sunny San Diego" for nothing...!

@Zort - Looks like you're having a blast... literally! Hope it warms up a bit for you. Keep sending the pictures...!

I think someone must have stolen my mojo. After getting 11 of the first 12 (only missing my highly desired "The Crash... snif, snif), I missed out on the last 3 posters. But since I got a copy of the litho poster of "For Lost" at the Gallery 1988 event... it takes a little of the sting out of it.

The only reason I'm trying for the extras is to be able to make a deal for the sure-to-be-impossible-to-get "Crash" poster. Either that, or I'm going to have to find out what kind of bribery it will take to get Eric Tan to save one for me... LOL

Adam, I am really tired, it's 1:50pm.
The way I see it, a lot of people are interested in the situation, and Rob Jones is A: an Artist involved in the project and B: he knows the situation, and Mitch. So a lot of people will be interested in reading what Rob has to say. If Rob asked me to remove it, I would do that, because it's his writing.

And Charter, excuse me, I am not taking sides.

Unknown said...

It is a little weird to post on the front page a letter blasting someone who criticized the sale today. I supposed the fair thing would be to let Adam write a rebuttal, but the best thing would be to remove it.

Bottom line is that the sale today was questionable at best. Mitch made things right so I have no issues there, but there's no one that is going to convince me that is normal.

When Rob Jones says he has prints that sold for $30 and then $1,000 I'd bet you my life that it was not 5 minutes apart. Its because he had just a couple left over and then weeks/months/years later released them back out as the value appreciated.

Regardless... everyone could go on and on about what happened, but its best just to move on. That letter on the front page is not going to accomplish that.

OMG Mitch said...

For the record, I'm fine with Rob's post just being in the comments, not on the front page. Not a big deal.

Did you not say in the other section for all the negativity to stop? Were you not calling Mitch a stand up or good guy? I would allow Mitch and Adam to work it out. They both posted their side. Allowing negativity to continue will only bring this site down.

I am sure someone that knows Adam can come in here and attest to his personality but that is petty to add fuel to the fire. I respect Rob, Mitch, and Adam. So, no need to throw one in the dirt because you respect the other two more.

Just my opinion.

The night's events has been a great example of the difficulties in mediation. I don't think anyone has had bad intentions. One man's hero is another man's terrorist (or so to speak)! Sometimes things don't work out the way you plan but great strides towards rectifying mistakes and keeping the peace have been made here.

Mel - lol! Obama giving a Lostie shout out with spoilers would be hilarious :)

Love to all! x

As someone who has gone thru some recent *ahem* blogosphere bashing- I feel for Mitch and hope that his actions have indeed proven that he was not trying to rip anyone off. I understand using the comments to vent your frustrations- but to solve the issue- it really is best to communicate directly with those involved. my 2 cents.

Thorsten- good night! We promise to play nice until you return in the A.M... :)

MiddayShadows said...

@Charter - I understand you being frustrated with negativity here, but constructive commentary doesn't necessarily equate to negativity or taking sides . This was a sale that impacted many people not just two you cited. Rob is an artist in this series, one whom I've had the distinct pleasure of speaking with on a few occasions, and you can be sure I want to hear what he has to say.

As for my two cents, I will restate what I have said elsewhere:

Mitch refunding $100 back to people who chose to pay $300 for Smokie, without anyone even asking him to, has to be the classiest move I've witnessed from a seller in this hobby.

MiddayShadows said...

'Night Thorsten. Nice work today, sincerely.

I posted two comments and you told me to not talk to you like that. I wasn't taking sides, I was asking you to be fair to Adam and not publicly humiliate him.

You can also email me and quit publicly lashing out at me. Go to bed, I will chalk this up to you being tired. I have nothing against you or anybody. I am not taking sides, no one should.

Anonymous said...

This whole thing doesn't need to get negative. You've just got to understand the others position.

The thing about fan related product is emotions run high when stock is short or people miss out. Who hasn't got pee'd off with ticketmaster when you missed out on a must see show??

No one predicted the chaos this limited run would cause. If they could, then I'm sure all the artists and the re-sellers would have rather have seen 1000 run, for themselves and the fans.

Mitch owned up straight away to an error of judgement. Not easy when you are in untested waters and have blood letting fans at you. Adam probably regrets the severity of his comments.

I hope a stupid little thing like this doesn't leave a bad taste in the mouth for the likes of Rob , Mitch and Adam, because this Lost project will be discussed for years as a great event. Enjoy it while its happening.

Whatever happened happened.

Okay, good night everybody!

My two cents:

I've been happy to meet and interact with a lot of people on this site, namely tomrex, zort, and a few others (whose handles I can't remember off the top of my head...ugh) with whom I've had very friendly e-mail conversations and stand-up print transactions.

That being said, the general tone of the comments herein (mostly from people NOT in the above group) concerning anything even remotely resembling a supposed slight or injustice borders on ridiculous. The fact of the matter is that many of us are either newbies or complete outsiders with regard to the print world. I agree with the tone and message of Jones's comment 110%. "Sanctimonious," "naive," and "uninformed" are all word that pop into my head when I think about issues like this involving LOST UAP. I was the subject of criticism for my use of a "backdoor" earlier in the series, and when one (to quote Olly) "enterprising dude" found a backdoor for the second round of Olly prints, Olly simply moved forward after he closed the backdoor, without guile or retribution. In fact, from what his post said, it looks like he even let the dude keep his order, much like GoMerch did with mine.

The same tone of the commenters applies to people deciding to sell their prints on eBay. There is NO EXCUSE for someone having to defend themselves on this blog for selling their collection on eBay. NONE. Shame on all of you for impugning the motives of someone who very clearly had personal reasons to put that stuff on eBay. To mis-quote Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: "Oh, look at Sweet LOSTARGers, sitting on their cloud of judgment, handing down life lessons to all the sinners."

I'm sure many of you will scoff at all this, but I have a feeling that many others are shaking their heads in agreement.

[BTW, thanks zort for keeping this all together.]

G'night Thorsten, good work today. :-)

I appreciate being able to see the resolution of the problem-that-shall-not-be-named on the last thread. I didn't even try for it but I would have had a sour feeling about the whole deal(er) if the people involved weren't able to post their amends here for us to see. I am, like others who have posted here, savvy to the collectibles world in general but not the poster world, so that setup would be news to me as well. I'd also guess that the light-speed nature of the way these posters sell was perhaps not taken into consideration when setting up the sale structure, but all is well that ends well and restitution has been offered and peace made. And I have to say that I've never seen such quick turn-around time as that on a customer complaint before! That's really nice, and rare.

Nice pic Zort! If that is a Titan rocket, my dad helped design it. :-)

So sorry to hear about the loss in your area SG.

I'm actually glad I didn't book Hawaii now... rumor going 'round that we may actually see the premiere before the beach party.

Wow -- It snowed and snowed and snowed (well this is Chicago, so we should be used to it.) But that meant I was up early, to drive to one hospital, then another, then back and forth across the street, then back to the first hospital, lunch (minimal) en route, then finally home at 7ish.

Looks like a LOT went on today. I have finally had a chance to get caught up on the events and comments.

Thorsten (I seriously hope you are indeed asleep by now) I think you did a great job, as well as can be expected with tensions running so high.

The artist re-releases of these LOST DCaaPB prints is of course going to sell out even faster than we were all used to with a DCaaPB reveal. 40-50 prints with likely still thousands of fans trying to snag one.

ioioos and DragonManagement, thank you for your comments.

Anyone can make a mistake -- NONE of us is perfect. What is important is acknowledging your mistakes, and learning from them and making amends if possible. Mitch did just that, and very quickly.

Frustration and venting while understandable never justify the use of derogatory terms. So go ahead and vent, no need to insult. Especially after someone has made amends so quickly.

Jay Ryan's copies of The Polar Bear will go to his subs, "will" being the key word there since I don't think they shipped until after 1/2 so Ryan in no way violated his contract with ABC. Each artist can do whatever they want with the 50 copies allotted to them (after the 1/2 date).

Lora, thanks for asking. YAY, I did get my Stout/LOST yesterday, thankfully before all of this snow hit.

RevMilo -- I haven't gotten anything I bought at G1988 yet, but you can always email the gallery and htey let you know what's up. Under the influence is opening today, so it might take a few hours for them to respond.

Anne, thanks you for the LU info, I will check it out when/if I have a chance to catch my breath this week.

@maven, heard it from a friend. It's probably NOT true, but I can dream.

@Rev - I bought three pieces from G1988 but haven't gotten them yet. Jensen said he'd be shipping my stuff after January 7th.

@andalone - thank you so much for the link to Leia Bell's interview. I purchased her 1/1 framed print from G1988, so it was great to read how she got involved in the project.

maven said...

Hope that rumor is NOT true, too! ABC probably spent some money for the Beach Premiere...they have a contest going. The only thing that worries me is IF...and I say IF...Obama speaks on the 2nd and they have to postpone the premiere and still keep the Beach Party, that would only give spoilers more time to get everywhere (but not from me)!

Umm, sure. (I feel like a single rodeo clown in the middle of the Colosseum)

I purchased Carlos Ramos's "The Swan." (It and all the original works in the gallery are shown here)

It struck me from the moment I saw a glancing shot of it in someone's live video feed opening night. I'm a big fan of the prints/art that are clearly LOST based but doesn't scream it at you (locke's secret, barracks, transmission over smokey or hatch). This fit that bill perfectly. I get calm when I see the Swan and the bright colors give it a radiant look and feel in person. I think it also contains a sneaky LOST reference. The main subject (and title of the piece) is the Swan - referring to the Swan station. But behind the swan is a Pearl placed perfectly with the Dharma logo to represent the Pearl Station - the station in the background watching the Swan station from afar.

In one of Carlos's interviews for G4 or CNN that was done at the opening, he said that this one represented the "corporation." My view of the piece was completely opposite from his. To me, the white swan (from the old ugly duckling parable) demonstrates the uniqueness of Dharma, LOST, this whole experience. But that's what's fun about art. His interpretation is the exact opposite of mine but both are totally valid.

Based on G1988's blog (link above), they still have some original pieces available and I think the fact that Carlos's "What Kate Did" didn't sell is a real crime.

Been enjoying the experience and this site since we were following Paul's blog wondering what the heck was going on and look forward to lurking/commenting more in the future.

I can't imagine them moving it a week, if only because that would make the finale 6/5, and thus out of May sweeps.

@andalone and @LostiePat well that just answered a few of the questions I just asked her. Ha

What terribly exciting conversations today! I'm new to this community so the print world is much different than the comic world where I've been based for way too long to mention.

ioioos speaks truths: I have a huge comic collection, a decent size original comic art collection, a massive Star Wars collection, a signed first edition novel collection, and a few others. The print situation as it is now is no different than any other "high demand" collectible, and todays prices on these prints will tumble as every collectible does. I did not get a Moss due to my stupid work network not loading Moss's page (strangest. bug. ever. The Lost gods hate me and laugh heartily), but I cannot see spending over $1k for that print. I almost spit coffee all over my screen when I saw that one go for $1800+. I wonder who is paying for these prints...
I spent some serious coin in the past month on these prints, acquiring 12 of the 16. I am new to this world but I LOVE what I see, and each print appeals to me in different ways. Not only that, but I've found a whole mess of new artists that I'm impressed by and already ordered some of their other prints.
My thoughts for what they're worth and I really enjoy interacting with the regulars here. I hope its a trend that continues in the future.
And I still want a Locke print. Bad.

Amy..aaahh the wishful world of rumorville...lets see..lets kill the tradition of doing one for the local population in gratitude for all that they have done for LOST..because..somebody started a rumor that Obama wanted the 2nd..hhhmm..

For the last five years, every week that LOST is on..at least one Somebody has posted at abc.com,,EVERY WEEK..that the President was giving a speech and LOST would be pre-empted..EVERY FREEKIN WEEK!!.. I mean..it was funny at first..but ..5 years of it? So..its with skepticism and humor that I have posted anything concerning Feb 2nd...and besides,, why do you rumor about poor Hawaii Tours having to refund everyones money cuz their end of the deal fell thru?..then again..they could just move the event in a week too? Hey, that would work for me too!

Point being,,rumors are only an indicator of the neurosis involved. The foundation of the Health bill passing before feb 2..is crack that the rumor originator be smokin. Matter of fact Pres O needs to give a motivating speech asap to get that thing passed by fall elections. I haven't looked at the petition,,but I sure hope folks aren't giving up personal info to it.

And besides..nothing will stop me and Maven( and her hubby) meeting up and talking LOST..so there.

@AJ - Carlos Ramos' "The Swan" was one of my personal favorites of the original works at Gallery1988. Congratulations!

@theotherben I am sure your interview is wonderful. Every interview yields a slightly different perspective, even if there is slight repetition on some questions. I am looking forward to seeing your post!

Thanks Anne for the link and your work - I wondered who else you found at the LU emails. But no secret info on how to get into the Davies course, alas. Well, let's keep sharing what we find out.

Thanks for the LU post. I'd read somewhere before about emails it may have been from you. I emailed Tom because it had said to email him if you had any questions. (I think) and got the same response. I didn't know about anything about emailing anyone else.
Have you had any luck yet with you endevor?

Carlos Ramos The Swan is a beautiful piece congratulations on the purchase.

The Kharma Initiative said...

@AJ, Carlos Ramos' The Swan is a great one! My wife liked that one the best (she was at the show) but out of our price range. I get what you mean about the colors - the whole image radiates out from the center. And how dumb am I to not notice the Pearl Station Dharma logo until you mentioned it? At 24x24, it's one of the larger ones at the show too. Good work getting it, and buying it from afar too! Would love to see your own photo(s) of it once it arrives, if you're so inclined.

I didn't think much of What Kate Did based on the gallery photo but Anne's in-person photo from the show gives it a lot more detail and texture. Still too bad it's out of our price range.

Thanks very much for commenting AJ, I've been really curious about what did (and didn't) trip people's triggers at that show. Care to post some more about your artistic interpretations of the art of the screenprints and art at the show? What didn't you like, maybe?

The Kharma Initiative said...

@patrick, welcome and thanks for your insightful comment. I miss Locke too.

I agree with MEL about rumoring re: the pre-premiere in Hawaii. However, my guess is that even if they must air the premiere before the scheduled event in HI, Damon and Carlton and the rest of the producers will still do everything they can to make the HI event amazing for the fans. I don't see why anyone shouldn't be excited to go, no matter what the premiere date. They've been great to us *fanatics* for years, I predict that will continue through to the end.

I've been making insane progress in my Lost rewatch this week (faster than the show's time line!), but I think my brain must be turning to mush - things in the show are making SENSE. Probably a bad sign!

Believe it or not I have a secondhand personal connection with Obama . . . don't think he's a Lost fan, though (my friend, not Obama, he's too busy running the free world for Lost). Too bad he didn't go to Washington after all, he could have put in a good word. ;)

@JT - yeah sorry I didn't get back to you about emails, did I! D'oh.

@Sayid'sGirl - no doubt it was me, apparently no one actually figured it out on their own. I don't know, maybe they'll drop in and give us some hints about WHAT we should email, lol!

Unknown said...

@Patrick - welcome to non-lurking land and very true. If you've been in other collectible communities, it helps a lot. Pretty much no matter how long you're at it, it's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment; but afterwards, it's important to retain perspective. For example after SDCC, items go from free, to $300, to a dime a dozen. Collectible circle of life I guess hah.

The Kharma Initiative said...

So much for a quiet Friday, Ben:

Hey all, the subject line pretty much says it all for this one. My official ABC Lost print will go on sale on my site at 2 PM CST this Friday. The print was part of a series commissioned by ABC and Gallery 1988 and 200 copies were originally sold on this site. The series was huge success and many of the prints sold out in seconds. I hadn't planned on putting this on sale just yet but I have literally received over 100 emails asking me to do it this week so I am. I only have 50 to sell but the majority of those will go to my subscribers. The price is $175 and this is one where you have to be there on time. I appreciate all the kind emails regarding the image and talk again very soon.
-Todd.

Sounds like there will be *very* few of these available.

Looks like I missed a busy night ;))

Big Thanks to Maven for keeping it under control.

Thank you for all for the support. We are one big family here, and of course we disagree on things. If anybody needs further explanations for my reasons to put Robs letter answering Adam on the frontpage, and the removal, let me know. Otherwise I consider the matter closed and suggest we move on. Again, thank you everybody, have a calm and relaxed Friday… and without a sudden poster drop we should be fine.
