Prize 8 - Use your Compass to find this survival pack 203

The eighth prize draw has two potential prizes for two winners -

A Season 5 DHARMA Initiative Orientation Kit on DVD (see picture) This has been given to us by Buena Vista Home Video. This is a Region 1 DVD set so bear in mind that if you win the prize your player will have to play this region to watch the DVD's.

A Series 5 Blu-ray Disc set (not a DI kit) a very generous donation from a fan of LostARGs.

Questions

1. What is the word ?

2. What would you like to win DVD DI KIT, Blu-Ray, Either.

Word clues -

Three in 1st Poster fruit.
There are two in the further instructions for Glasgow.
The first of who sent us to Johnny Cupcakes.
The first of Shannon's final word in French.
The second of the second of Tom Sawyers Friend's artist.
A white blade of grass.
There are two in this monstrous location.
The fourth of the crash reveal.

As this has proved quite tricky and we have only had a couple of correct answers the end date for this competition is going to be extended until 19h of January.

We will also now accept a second answer from an email address however only the second answer (if sent) will be accepted.

A few pointers to the answer -

We are looking for a single eight letter word.
All of the 8 clues relate to the poster series and they are not necessarily in the correct order.
A couple of clues have two potential answers but only one of them is correct.

The overall clue does not relate to the poster series and as a further clue another three letter acronym - TLE.

Solve the clues above, the answers can all be found on LostARGs.com and simply submit the word as your answer. (you can submit what you think the clues mean as well, but only the word is required to enter)

As an additional clue for the whole word - "TWM last word at the end of the third"
(not related to the current ARG)

Submit your answers by clicking here and entering the information into the entry form. This same form will be used for each prize. Make sure you choose PRIZE 8 from the selection drop down.

Entries for this prize must be submitted by 18th January 2010

These draws are free for all to enter, but if you can spare some money then UNICEF is charity that does good work in over 150 contries. The link on this competition entry is different from before as it takes you to a site to donate specifically to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Click here or the logo if you wish to donate.

Wow... That's a very generous prize. Nice riddle.

Well good morning ARGverse!

I am still awake, just having scraped together enough credits to graduate LU Dean's list. I doubt I was fast enough to sneak into the top 108, but oh well. And how exactly are they informing those who did make that magic 108...email...LU message board...hmmm

Zort70 said...

I've just posted some info on the Lost University info from last night. No new comments section so we should stay here for now.

ChrisL said...

It seems everyone is way ahead of me on LU. I have some serious cramming to do this weekend. I may make the first 1008!

Great prizes, great riddle. Going to have fun with this later.

Morning all, have a great day.

I claim the prize for the most "greats" in a post!

The new post snuck up on me like Ben and Ethan so re-post here...

I'm starting to feel very much like Rousseau...

my trasnsmission to BT remains unanswered...I have no access to Lost Uni and can't even view the videos. Despite being lured into believing BT that it would definitely be switched on last night, I believe that this lie was a manifestation of the sickness. I have now been told connection will not be made until next Friday. I am starting to lose hope....

Si qui que ce soit puisse entendre ceci, mon large bande est mort. S'il vous plaƮt m'aider.

Awesome prize btw :)

lol @ Zort welcome back :-) Missed you. Hope you can get to the states again some time when it's a bit warmer (then you can watch the flying cockroaches in Florida lol) going to go play LU now for a bit.

I'm caught in a net ;)

ObFuSc8 said...

Good morning futureself, ChrisL, Zort, Ellen -- youalleverybody!

futureself -- LOL "...mon large band est mort."

ChrisL, I don't think we have any way of knowing how many have actually graduated st this point.

I noticed I got the first "Congrats on your application for graduation..." note (or something to that effect) as soon as I cleared 21 credits. But there is actually a "graduate" button in the upper right hand part of the screen that you can push (in Student Records). I wonder if that makes any difference (probably not). The BD-discs seem to keep track of exactly what time you started your first, 1st Sem course, and I would think they do the same and upload the timestamp of when you first clear 21 credits.

I went back and actually finished Philosophy 201 (the test is a discuss on you own type thing), and I got a second graduation email/notice, and could actually go back and hit the "graduate" button again.

That graduation notice actually says something about showing up early for commencement. I'm not sure what that means, and it really shouldn't affect the first 108 diplomas.

The fastest way to 21 credits is:
-Jeremy Davies PHYS 301 +
-Art 101 Seminar +
-Either PSY 201 or PHI 210 (both are single class courses with "discussion" tests.)

You could actually probably just fastforward through the class/video and finish those classes to get finished quickly, (though that probably doesn't matter now) and then go back and watch the classes later.

andalone said...

I wonder if LU will provide job counseling and placement into The Dharma Initiative as we all graduate and are expected to get real jobs?..

ObFuSc8 said...

LOL -- andalone, I would lovve it if they'd set me up as an experimental physicist...

ChrisL said...

@Ob, I don't think you realize how far behind I am! I've been playing hooky.

Martyn said...

I'm awake again now! It was sort of fun graduating LU at 5am. I don't think it's going to affect anyone when you get all 21 credits, I think it may be a first to hit the graduate button on Feb 12th thing, which is sort of lame but still. Someone on the last post said there's only 250 people on the Dean's List so that makes it easier to know that there's a fair shot at least.

Btw, i'm dieweener on the Deans List.

Martyn said...

Nice question Zort, going to try and crack it now. Won't enter though because of the lovely Amy Lynn! :D

Unknown said...

I've been at this for 2 hours!!! This is killing me.

Zort70 said...

Be warned that some of the clues can possibly have two meanings only one of which is right.

If people feel that they are struggling I will give a small hint as to how to solve this later on.

Unknown said...

So Zort, if we solve each clue coorectly, it should come straight out with the answer, right?

Zort70 said...

All I'll say is the answer is an 8 letter word.

Tess315 said...

Nice prize. I already tried to win this at TLC, I think I'll pass this time. Good Luck all.

As usual I'm behind and posted this is the last post. So here it is again.

Good morning all

I just want to add to maven’s sentiment from last night and reassure Amy Lynn and all the “new” LostARGers that they wouldn’t be left out at TLC just like they were welcomed here they would be welcomed there.

Anyone is welcome at TLC as long as you play nice and don’t post any spoilers. We’re 100% spoiler free there. Which is something I think you would like Amy. We have a link to what's considered a spoiler and what is not in the side bar..

TLC and LostARGs has always been a welcoming community. We’re all Lost fans and we all like to talk Lost, and like maven said I’m sure all of you have alot to contribute. Don’t be shy.

Now back to catching up on over 100 comments since I went to bed last night.

Thanks Patmc for the video of the count down. I wonder what's important about the Hurley video?

I'm on the Dean's list as Raelyn. I've signed up for semester 2 but won't have time to take any classes until this afternoon. I seriously doubt I'll be one of the 108 to get a signed diploma, but I don't really care as long as I get one. :)

Ahh, ok Thorsten. Makes sense.

thorsten said...

Zort, you know, there are times when the term drymount just doesn't express your true feelings ;))

Unknown said...

Just wondering, has anyone solved this yet? I have one possible word but it doesnt fit 1-2 clues.

Marshall said...

I'm pretty confident on 5 of the letters, but my solutions for the other 3 don't yield any words. The overall word clue isn't helping either (what is TWM?). HELP!

Unknown said...

I'm pretty much at the exact same status as you Marshall.

Just Thinking said...

Martyn- I have a sinking feeling you may be right about hitting the "graduate" button on the 12th-for me sinking because I went to some trouble to finish last night and on the 12th I may not even have a computer to use. Well, I'll get over it if so.

Amy Lynn said...

I actually do NOT think it's right that you have to be in the first 108 on the 12th. If that were the case, the "graduate" button wouldn't have been live last night.

Martyn said...

Good point Amy Lynn, why bother making it available if it has not current purpose? It's like adding the semester two classes in semester one but you can't enrol in them yet.

I really hope you're right though.

Just Thinking said...

Zort- if I may ask- is there sometimes controversy over the definition of your fruit?

chaseter said...

JT...I think he is referring to the same fruit that Gwen spells out for us in her lyrics.

-charter

Drama said...

yes, it is - you wouldn't make a sauce from the fruit he's thinking of, but it might make you crazy.

I can't use either of these DVDs, being in the UK and Blu-rayless, but the puzzle is fun. I'm stuck on the tom sawyer's friend's artist, white blade of grass, and maybe the further instructions for glasgow. Is the word sequential, or should we re-arrange the letters?

ChrisL said...

Thorsten, I have 30Rock awaiting me at home. Counting down the minutes.

There have been a few murmurings on the classification of certain types of this fruit.

I will give everyone a further clue to TWM tomorrow if people are still struggling.

chaseter said...

I know what the word is.

The word is the bird.

Drama said...

I've either got it very wrong, or it's two words. The two words I've got make sense, but Zort says it's "a word", so I am somehow totally wrong, I think.

Either way, I'm not entering, so whatever!

Martyn said...

Ben,

You can get US DVDs to play on a UK player you know?

Charter...

When I first saw the question, I thought, easy, Bird! But what's that got to do with LOST?

Drama said...

I know I can, but effort...

Avondale Blog said...

I think I'm doing pretty well on answering the clues - I think I know where you're going with it. I get TWM, I just don't get the white blade of grass yet. ???

I started semester 2 last night at midnight, but just couldn't stay up long enough to get enough credits to graduate. Hopefully I can do that this weekend. Maybe there'll be something for the graduates after the first 108.

Region 1 DVD

I'm not trying for the prize, just trying to figure out the puzzle.

Zort70 said...

I'm glad I've come up with something to challenge everyone, hopefully you won't all throw empty poster tubes at me when you know the answer.

Zort... is it actually two words? or just one?

Martyn said...

Did anybody see that LOST article on Syfy about 20 things in LOST that we're glad didn't happen? Was interesting reading AND spoiler free.

Patmc said...

Good morning Martyn! Could you post a link to that SyFy article?

Avondale Blog said...

I'm going to have to think on it a while. I may have some wrong answers, I'm not able to come up with a word. Sayid's girl, if I'm correct the blade of grass comes from something out of Lost University. (but I could be wrong)

Martyn said...

Trying to find it on the website now Patmc, read it on the iPhone app.

Think i've cracked the TWM now. Just got to get the word(?) at the end of the third.

Avondale Blog, way off base with the grass. Think about what you've seen over the past month.

Martyn said...

Avondale Blog said...

thanks martyn, but so far I can't fit anything I've seen lately with a white blade of grass, except what I mentioned before (from a course at LOST U). I'll just have to let it sit for a while and wait for the "aha" to kick in. If it does...

Martyn said...

It''s not LU.

Amy Lynn said...

Martyn, great article, though I vehemently disagree about Richard Alpert. It is ESSENTIAL that we see a centric episode.

Patmc said...

Martyn, thanks for the link!

Martyn said...

Yeah, I didn't agree with that either, I still want an explanation of the plans they had for Libby. Hopefully Darlton will release a book that says what they had planned for certain characters and how it changed. I'd be really intrigued as to how they were going to make Nikki and Paulo part of the 815ers.

Avondale Blog said...

I got it!!!!!(or them - guess you have to pick one?) for the white blade of grass. Thank you martyn - I did finally get what you were saying. The wrong thing I was thinking was that it was a hieroglyph in the shape of a a blade of grass. Overthinking again.

Martyn, there are a couple of clues I'm flip-flopping about. I can't make a word out of the answers I have right now (I don't think). If you're talking about the 2nd clue - that's one of the ones I'm pondering over. If I am guessing right there could be 3 answers. I also have 2 answers for the 3rd question and 2 for the 6th question. And that's if I'm right on where to find the answers...sheesh.

sayid's girl - a whole heck of a lot of stuff can be found on Lost ARGs...

my quandries are where there can be several answers (if I'm interpreting what an answer is correctly)to a clue. I have "answers" - but they aren't forming a word yet.

martyn - my answer to the monstrous location depends on whether the location is per the print, per the show, or per the reveal... (and even then, there are choices to make)

Hi all, this is off topic but I felt like I should share it nonetheless.

I know we try to stay away from ebay, but ebay let me get something, somehow. It just arrived today. I'm not condoning paying flippers; I honestly don't know where this came from. If it's just a replica, I'm fine with that.

For everyone interested in the Taweret statues, keep an eye out. A replica has made its way out to the general public. If one can, surely more will.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290386212501

Avondale Blog said...

I wish they'd make a $10-$20 version of Taweret available to the masses who don't have a lot of money but want some LOST memorabilia any way.

ChrisL said...

Wow hobbit... very interesting. Is it one of the blank resins from G1988 that's been painted I wonder or did someone get hold of a blank from G1988 and create a mould to cast more? Well spotted anyway. Don't really see this as a flipper item.

Fascinating reading through all your attempts on the competition today. Zort. Sounds as though this is a toughie! I've not had chace to work on it as the day has been mad but I will take a look later. No entry from me this time as I'm fortunate enough to have both items. Great prizes though, good luck everyone.

hobbit said...

Yeah, I probably paid more than I should have, but I really wanted one. It looks good. Clearly not the paint job of the $500 dollar ones or the ones handed out in line, but I'm happy enough.

Anything that's going to raise money to help in Haiti has to be a positive. Great idea Zort.

Just Thinking said...

Yes- some Haiti help would be cool. I was thinking a Lost Args food drop would be a good thing.

Amy Lynn said...

I think this is a really great idea. I sponsor three boys through Compassion International (which is a top rated charity, meaning that the largest percentage of my money goes directly to my kids), and they are still waiting to hear about the thousands of kids that are sponsored in Haiti.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

great idea Zort I'm all about paying it forward when ever I can. every little bit helps and if I can skip out on one little thing in my week to put it somewhere it's needed, I'm all for it. Count me in. I could also donate some things for a prize if you want. I have a bunch of Lost goodies here.

Martyn said...

Changed my vote from maybe to definitely. We don't deserve these prizes for free so paying to help someone who deserves help is a yes in my book. Bring it on!!!

ObFuSc8 said...

The poll on the front page comes up as "closed" for me, but I'd vote definitely. Then we can decide which charity to send the money to.

mtutick said...

I'm happy making a donation, but I think the size of the donation should not afford you a better chance of winning.

Everyone should be able to help in their own way (maybe some sort of minimum though)

Amy Lynn said...

@mtutick, that's an interesting comment. However, if whatever the prize(s) is/are were donated with the explicit intent on raising as much money for the victims of the Haiti quake as possible, we'd want to provide an incentive for people to donate as much as possible.

ChrisL-I'm figuring the Taweret is a mold made from one handed out in line. The person I bought it from also makes replica Ghostbusters proton packs, so they (or someone they know) probably was nearby and worked a deal with someone who received one. The lines don't look as defined as the pics I've seen of the ones that Darlton gave out; to me it does resemble a copy rather than an original. If I didn't think I'd get in trouble, I'd look into making more and getting them to the people who would like to have one. Then again, I don't know how well a "copy of a copy" would turn out, either.

ObFuSc8 said...

EllenB -- I found the concept behind LU pretty interesting. The courses themselves have to contain enough content to be interesting, while still appealing to a large range of LOST fans and still fit on a BDrom. So within those constraints I've found them fun so far.

They are more like a little refresh course on some of the basics behind LOST, going into S6. Until this ARG, I really only posted at the ABC.com board and a few times theories at Dark, but in those discussions we (like I'm sure many here) explored the physics/TT, philosophers and to some extent the psych topics in much more detail. Not to mention years of character and morality discussions and more.

So, I'm at that point where I think I know the TWM is and some of the clues for sure and some with 2 alternatives- but still can't make any words. Time for a break.

Just Thinking said...

Imannie- I'm not on Stout's mailing- but no one's mentioned it.

Tess315 said...

Hey how did I get on that list? I must be getting chatty. lol

Congrats Ellen B.
Isn't there suppose to be some kind of hints to season 6 in the LU classes?

This year even promo pics are spoilers to me so I won't be looking. Please keep discussion vague or to a minimum. Thank you.

Last year I looked at every pic an video I could find. It kind of dulled the season for me. This year I'm trying to stay 100% spoiler free. So far not too bad. I only know the title of the first episode and seen the pic of the chaaracter in Spin video, but I don't know anything about him. So that's good. I've kind of guessed a couple of things from conversations here but no biggie.

Sam G et al..I really like the LOST Supper pic you have posted. The first one I saw, had the Losties looking at each other.. This 2nd one ,,and the 2nd time I've seen it..Gak!..they are all looking at the viewer, and looking at the viewer with attitude or perhaps..with question in the countenance,,as in..Well, its been all about you all along,,so How About It!!?? I've had many discussions about the perspective of LOST,,and this Pic , seems to me,,says it all in one foto..imho.
I think I shall get one and seek autographs.

I agree with hobbit - it looks like a recast. A little too close to be a fan-made replica + unusual bubbles in the face area, though it's hard to tell from the photo. I will tell you it is VERY COMMON in the prop community to recast (for sale) from film props. Usually there's a lot of unspoken rules to it, but it is done. (Speaking of props, after years since the reg closed, I am FINALLY a member of the RPF w00t!)

LostU: the hints for S6, I can't remember the wording but it was "you won't notice it until the season starts". So, no spoilers - just nudges/head start on the new season.

Need to check back at the forums, want to do my discussion homework darnit!

@XXX: I use my PS3, and also for games, but I only have LBP and a few PSN games atm. Haven't even set up an ID I don't think?

Oh snap I'm in the top comments? lol. Better shut up for a bit XD;

XXXHardcore said...

@Anne

Dang! C'mon and set one up! It is really simple, and maybe in any chill, casual gaming off-time, we could play LBP together. Thanks for responding. I was thinking that my post was invisible or that the BluRay people on here didn't have PS3.

I picked up The Hatch from Kevin Tong today. Here's our picture together with the print:

So cool that you could pick it up.

And I just noticed, Kevin posted a rather detailed "Behind the Scenes" on how he created The Hatch. It's really incredible:

http://tragicsunshine.com/newsletter/?p=927

I should note, though many of you already know this, Kevin is an awesome guy. It was a real treat getting to meet him today and check out his working space.

@ATeam: What an awesome memory to have with that great print!

@XXX: I have the PS3...do not play games on it, just DVDs.

I gotta post more often...got to get on Zort's list (anything like Jacob's list?).

I'm starting to think it isn't a real word... I assume it's an anagram...

From Tyler:
"on monday, january 18th, between 1-3 PM, my lost poster will go up for sale.
i cannot give a specific time since that would crash my website. IF MY SITE DOES CRASH, and i hope it doesn't, i will put up the sale at some point after it comes back up online.

at some point between 1-3 PM i will put up a specific email address on my website, tstout.com, along with a Lost related question. you must email the email address given on tstout.com, and your email must include:
1. your answer to the question
2. your actual mailing address listed on your paypal.
any emails that don't include both of these items in the same email will be disqualified.

since i have less than 50 Lost posters for sale, sales will be determined in the order i receive emails to that specific email address. you will know within ten minutes of sending your email if you were within the first 40ish people to email. those picked will be given the option to buy the poster, and if they decline, i will move down the list of emails until i am sold out.

i will not be giving the question beforehand, or the email address to send it to. please don't email asking if you were picked. if you need an update, check back to tstout.com and it will list the status of the sale. once it says 'sold out', the poster will be completely sold out, 100%. "

Just Thinking said...

Thank you Midday. Do you mind if I repost at LP? There aren't hordes of people there trying for the posters, but I like to keep it up to date.

XXXHardcore said...

But wait! There's more!

From Tyler Stout:
"CONTEST!
i am also having a contest for my longtime collectors, beyond the details listed above. its actually 3 contests. winners won't win a free poster, just a chance to preorder.
if you would like to be in the running to pre-order one of these posters, please do the following within the next 24 hours.

LOST - if you'd like a chance to preorder my Lost poster, and if you own a copy of my Lost Boys poster, please take a photo of yourself in front of it, plus another photo zoomed in on where it was signed and numbered. it cannot be photoshopped, you must actually be standing in front of the poster. plus the zoomed-in photo of the signature/numbers is to prevent a bunch of people using the same poster. So, Photo of you in front of Lost Boys poster, plus photo zoomed in on signed/numbered portion of poster. "

Just Thinking said...

He's put a lot of thought into keeping both Lost fans and his fans happy- good ideas.

MiddayShadows said...

@Just Thinking- You're welcome :) And no problem reposting! This is Tyler's heads up message after all - I'm sure he wants the word out! Thanks for asking!

@XXXhardcore- more indeed! Thanks for posting that end part.

Hats off to you Tyler - now thats how to sell a high demand LOST print! A question, great idea!
I have it, and its awesome. Its the trophy print of the campaign.
Footnote - wonder how many have the Lost Boys poster?...

Hi guys - back with some more fan art.

Here is Faraday

Here is Lapidus

Here is Miles:
(I simulated glow in the dark elements. I'm not sure how it would come out if I actually got it printed but I hope it looks like I pictured it.)
Open the following links in their own tabs so you can cycle between the two:

Lights On

Lights Off

I hope you guys like them as much as I do!
I'm going to look into silk screening places around my house tomorrow and I will probably get the three I've made so far (as well as the Charlotte I am going to make within the next few days) printed into a small series so you guys can hang them in your house. :D

PS - does anybody know the deal with copyrights and potential concerns with printing something like this? Just curious. Don't want to get in trouble!

Andrew said...

Oh, also - if you're interested in buying any please email me or post in the comments so I know a rough estimate of how many to get printed!

Sam G said...

Andrew,

You're killing me. These are fantastic.

ObFuSc8 said...

Andrew -- you'll be taking your chances with anything directly LOST related -- with the actual character names/quotes in the posters. But as long as you keep the series small, and be careful not to publicize to much you can get away with it. Especially if you keep the selling price down.

The most that can happen is that you'd get a cease and desist letter. I doubt they'd really come after you for $$ if there's not much profit.

ABC does shut people down, but it takes awhile before they know what you are doing. There's a site called LOST Tees that was just shut down this week.

Andrew said...

@ObFuSc8 -- Ah, alright. How many do you think would be a good amount to make? ~100? Or less? And I can't see myself selling them for anything pricey unless printing them costs way more than I anticipate, which I doubt it will.

Jawapez said...

Oh! I totally forgot to mention another cool thing about meeting Kevin Tong today. When I arrived he was in the middle of opening a package from LT- it was the mugs for him and Danger with their drawing on it. It was cool to see one of those in person too :)

@Andrew- I'm probably in for Faraday, and I'm anxious to see Charlotte

kiwilostie said...

Andrew - please do the Farady one first (my fav!) and put me down for one, #16 if at all humanly possible!!
Hey, no harm in asking!

Faraday - ugh, typos!

Andrew: Cool character posters. Just a warning...I believe anything for profit might be trouble.

Andrew said...

It might be a good idea for you guys to email me if you are interested in getting one of my posters. It will probably be a few weeks before they're actually given to a printer and ready to ship so I'd rather have your names all in one place. Not sure of prices yet so when I find out I'll be sure to blast an e-mail out and give any news.
I think if I keep the series small enough, the repercussions may be avoided - even though it's still not necessarily following the laws to the tee. If I somehow get reprimanded before I can get them printed I guess the best I'd be able to offer is super high res images for you guys to print out on your personal printers :\

Hopefully everything will work out though! :D

My email is buddycuffs@gmail.com

ObFuSc8 said...

Andrew -- I am not going to be too helpful with prices/# of copies to print, etc. Justin would be a good resource. You should probably email him -- his email is on his website
http://www.damoncarltonandme.com
(I didn't want to post it here before checking with him).

Justin was very careful to avoid anything directly LOST related, including character names and quotes. I would finding out how much it would cost to print a certain # and really just charge a bit over cost/shipping and make a free download available as well.

MiddayShadows said...

Ditto what ObFuSc8 said in the last line of her post. In fact, I'd go so far as to say you're taking a risk in distributing anything even you cover only actual costs.

A lot of current legal-ese specifically uses the phrase "...including not for profit...."

I remember Daniel Danger piped up over at EB with his two cents regarding exactly this, and stated the same.

chaseter said...

If you make a profit from intellectual property that does not belong to you without written consent/permission...you run the risk of getting the Mouse pissed.

Think of it like downloading a torrent. A ton of people do it and the chances of getting caught are slim but technically you are stealing.

I love the prints though and you are an awesome artist but I would do what Justin did and make art without using ABC's property to be safe.

Sandman90 said...

Andrew - Your art looks great, Faraday is my favorite. Like everyone else is saying, slippery slope ahead. While I appreciate what you're trying to do, the ABC/Disney mothership could make life miserable for you later. As your art contains overtly copyrighted material, they can (and occasionally do - multiple google hits on this) make you pay. I would advise sticking with the high-res images, especially as you have left internet documentation acknowledging your possible culpability.
For all that, I really like what you've done.

Andrew said...

Alright, to wrap all three of those comments into one - I totally understand the intellectual property rules and I'd rather not break them. Don't want to potentially lose more money than I make :P

I have a counterquestion though. What is the deal with likenesses? Wouldn't they just as easily be able to argue that the Faraday image likeness is so similar to the character that it's just as bad as putting his name?

What I think I will do is this:

FARADAY:
-Change the name to just DANIEL. Or Faraday. I'm guessing Daniel is less likely to cause a stir than Faraday. It's just that Faraday is so much more recognizable :(
-Remove the quote at the top, possibly just take out the first line and make it "Whatever happened, happened." Do you think that line is ambiguous enough to be arguably not from Lost?

LAPIDUS:
-Remove only the "Wait a second. We're not going to Guam, are we?" line, because that's the only verbatim line in the poster. The Dharma logo isn't anything to worry about because it doesn't say Dharma and the Ba gua is an existing symbol.

MILES:
-All I have to do is take out STRAUME and just leave it miles because that one is already ambiguous enough as it is.

If you guys think I should take out or replace or even add anything to make up for lost (get it?) space in the poster, please tell me! I want the finished products to look as good as possible. :)

And if those potential changes I just mentioned STILL don't get me outside of the law, then I think I'm going to just bite the bullet lol

Sandman90 said...

@Andrew - Outside of talking to a lawyer, you might ask some legitimate businesses who deal with this sort of thing all the time. For example, TeeFury.com has original artwork sold on a daily basis that frequently uses copyrighted material. You might ask them how they handle that.

kiwilostie said...

I think if it were up to Darlton, youd be fine, but even at this stage of things, it probably isnt, unfortunately. Talk to Justin for sure, and see what his experience has been so far.
If you were to drop a name, Id drop the first name.

Very interesting email from Stout then. Sounds as though he's given the thing some considerable thought. Good stuff. Thanks Midday for posting.

@xxx, Have a PS3 but I only bought it for streaming and to play the LOST game. AliceL sometimes plays Little Big Planet.

@Andrew, great work on your art. Be careful with the rest.

@EllenB. Congratulations!

@ AteamBlog.com. Awesome that you got to pick up your print and geek out for Kevin. Great picture. And thanks for the heads up on KT's article on the printing. Finally, I have my answer on how many colours, 7! More than most people thought.
