LOST University Connected A - Z 99

The final LOST University Tutoring session is now available, and this time it takes the shape of an A to Z of LOST.

Tom also says that there will be a trivia contest and if you go to the Tutoring Center Forum you can create your own A-Z.

@Anne...

I'm going to be going from Tokyo to hakone to Hiroshima and to Kyoto and then I make my own way back to Tokyo and spend a day in Tokyo all by myself. Should be pretty cool!

Congrats Barb on the win!

Lisa...
I do intend to. Hawaii is part of that decision. I've got probably 8 months left of being juevenile and oblivious to the world and then I start running toward the ton of bricks.

As for the 10x better, been on my own at work for the past hour and half because the other guy who was supposed to be with me called in sick half an hour after he was supposed to start, so had to do two peoples jobs on my own and lock up the shop, which I've only done once and still I was with someone.

And before that I got an email from the parcelforce telling me they're charging me £30 customs fee for the I Kill The Bus Driver poster I bought. If anyone knows the rules on UK customs, I presumed it being sent as a gift excluded you from any charges even if you claimed full whack for the insurance?

Martyn, we have a Lostie in Toyko - Hiroki Tojo @hirokitojo and also FB. If it works out that you two can meet for coffee, I think you would enjoy his company.

Random: does anyone have a Michael's coupon that is still good?

Whenever I buy anything at Michaels, the receipt printer will print a coupon on my receipt, usually good for the following week. My advice, go get something small just for the coupon...

MilkcanRocks said...

@ AmyLynn, gotta ask - why are you asking about a Michaels coupon?

Amy Lynn said...

@Milkcan... apparently my Ben Linus print is finally here :) He needs a frame.

@ Martyn

The uk postal charges for imports are getting stupid.

Bascially its this...

From the US, the sender must state what is being sent and what the value is. The value will dictate the insurance cover and let EU customs know if there is additional charges to pay.

If the item is under £18, then it is tax and customs exempt. If its over, then you pay a percentage...something like 22%

the sting in the tale is that Royal Mail have a deal with Customs in the UK where they can charge an additional £13.50 as a handling charge every time an item gets stopped for being over £18.

So an £19 item usually ends up with a £17.50 tax and handling charge!

You can avoid the cost by chance, or if the sender lists the item as "gift" on the package, however, they will then invalidate their standard insurance.

So a $30 US poster + postage could end up costing a uk buyer £57.50 by the time they get it. £20 for the poster, £20 for postage and £17.50 tax and handling.

I got lucky today. My Hatch print turned up and Kevin Tong ticked it as "gift" so it didn't get stopped, even with the $200 cost listed (which would have incurred £25 of tax).

Thanks Kevin, you're a star!

Going to get it professionally framed? Cool! I'm trying my hand right now at framing my print myself. What are the dimensions of the Slater/Ben Linus print? I heard that it was a little 'larger' than quoted on DCAAPB.com...

Amy Lynn said...

@Milkcan... not sure of the dimensions yet. Also not sure if I'm going to frame myself or just have a custom mat or custom everything.

MilkcanRocks said...

Watch out - if you frame it yourself you may need a mat, since I heard that the dimensions of the Ben Linus print are about a 1/4 inch wider. I just got a print from Slater and it's about a 1/4 inch wider. So keep that in mind if you do it yourself and you are buying your own frame.

Is it to late to get involved with the lost university stuff? would it be worth my time if its not?

The Kharma Initiative said...

Hey Amy Lynn, Milkcan,

My Ben Linus is not really any wider than normal, but it definitely is longer than 24". It's nearly 25".

Amy Lynn, Michael's where I am has their wood picture frames on sale at 55% off through Saturday. I don't think you can use a coupon on top of that. You can get a plain but nice 22x28 wood frame off the shelf for about $20. Then ask them to custom cut an archival mat for you - another $20 or less.

Here are the wood frame styles available

Hobby Lobby also has similar prices.

Oh and didn't have to pay extra for Customs!

MilkcanRocks said...

Thanks Kharma! I'm currently practicing for cutting a mat for my 'Rousseaus Transmission' print, so I'm gonna need a frame soon. Is that a pricing on a frame already put together, or one you have to assemble? Does it include glass/plastic, too?

Amy Lynn said...

I may end up using a custom framer across the street from me - she only charged me $40 to frame WK.

Martyn said...

ioioos...

I'll add another reason why I hate the Royal Mail. The person who sent me the poster ticked it as gift, so he says, have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up and pay for it, so I don't know why there is a charge on it. But as ChrisL said, it's random, yours and his Hatch got through Customs with no charge but mine which cost $125 gets charged.

Really must find a job outside this country!

@Patmc...

Missed the post where you mentioned framing CD's and can't find it on the last post either. Apologies if my eyes are glazed and blatently missing it.

Hey all. Been super busy so haven't posted much and read even less. Tried looking through everything but couldn't find an answer, so:

Has the Haiti donation contest topped $1000 yet? If not, how close is it? Yes, I want that Locke's Secret, darn it. :)

@MurghBatwar...

Well aren't you special! No customs charges, i'm sure Royal Mail know how much I hate them and are just doing this on purpose.

I was fine with the DCAAPB prints because they claimed it as worth $15-20 (which thank god didn't get lost in the post)

Also, if I have a specific question regarding the donation aspect, who can I contact and what contact info? Or can whoever that is email me directly?

Here's Patmc's post to you from the previous post.

In regards to your desire to frame some CDs... I actually did that for an art project back in college. I used some foamcore board, and then used a blank CD as a guide, and used a very sharp exacto knife to cut around the CD. I cut at a slight angle so the hole was slightly smaller than the CD, so the CD would fit snuggly inside the hole when I was done. I ended up having to use the exacto to clean the holes up a little bit, but the results were pretty good. I laid the foamcore over some mat board, so the CDs wouldn't fall out the bottom either.

I tried to use a CD as a template to create a CD sized metal punch, so I could just use a hammer out better formed circles, but couldn't find a good source of the metal to form around the CD to make the punch. If you can figure out something to use as a punch, you could just hammer some holes in the foamcore, which would definitely be easier than the exacto method for 15 holes...

Hope that helps a little bit... but as always... you mileage may vary. :-)

That Ben Linus Print is something isn't it? Actually, its what we know of Ben Linus that the print hints at and reminds us of, that is so something. The dude was a master manipulator, or so he thought. Heck, even the anal retentive Jack outwitted him. But he did pull one over on Sawyer with that blood pressure con..hehe. He made up a whole fiction and the dim Sawyer believed it ,,hook line and sinker. What a fish! And then Ben believed he could BS Keme. What a sociopath! Ben believed his own BS!! oh OH,,you changed the rules!! Nobody changed the rules. Ben had been getting away with his BS( remember the girly boy,," You Are Mine!!?)for so long that he actually believed his BS was the Rules! Talk about LOST! Yea, Ben was Lost in his own sauce! The little runt sociopath deserved more than getting his nose bloodied and thrown in the ocean imho. Alex should have beat upon his head and shoulders with a baseball bat. AAAAHH yes.. that print brings back such memories. They are something else.

I keep wondering why Ben came back to the Island. Seems like he said his goodbyes once already.

MJCarp said...

So question of the night . . . want reason does Ben have for coming back to the island in 2007? Someone, something, it's just home to him? He seems to be able to come and go as he pleases up until the sub is sunk.

MEL, Frontline or Ortho Bug-B-Gon should do the trick.

Thorsten, I believe that's an invitation?

Amy Lynn said...

I think Ben comes back to the island in 2007 to atone for Alex's death.

Amy Lynn said...

The neat thing about S5 is that they answered WAY more questions than they asked. They just answered them without giving you all the puzzle pieces to figure out what they were doing. Ben's speech to Sun in "Dead is Dead" is a good example of that. He TELLS you John Locke is dead, that the island does not raise people from the dead, and he says that he is terrified of "John Locke". And for good reason. Just as Esau used Emily to bring Ben to the others, so he used Locke to bring Ben to Jacob.

mungonna said...

..because sweet kind homemade apple pie olde Eloise said Everyone had to go back or it wouldn't work right. So Ben kinda hitch hiked along as a body filler..Dez did not buy into Eloise's insistence. But of course..Ben really was looking for a way back on the hopes of gettin the Island back under his manipulation.

So..he came back because he still believed his own BS. What he didn't realize was..that by killing off Locke..he actually set up the opportunity for the MIB ..to take over,,and thus immediately turn the tables on Ben..subjugated Ben, to the one being manipulated.

..or...for the metaphor of it. Keep deceit close to you, so you know it when it comes around.

James Michener wrote a Book about It!
MEL

mungonna said...

In more figurative terms..When creating a future, you have to do it with Love,,otherwise..you are repeating the past. So, Ben going back was for repeating the Past..It didn't happen. The MIB,,while some believe to be Evil..will prove to take the concept of Love to new dimensions.

Another way to see it is..when answering the question..Who Am I?..you have to know who you ain't as well. Knowing what is deceit,,helps in knowing who you ain't.

Seems to me Esau is a misnomer. The Man in Black (mystery) should be thought of as the Spirit of Lautreamont, Rimbaugh and of course Andre Breton..

Will Ben find Love? and therefore have a future? When RA says "he will have no memory" does that mean the Temple is a place for new beginnings/futures? In other words, is RA is telling the Truth? Then who corrupted Ben or why didn't the Temple magic happen for him? 'Cause he does remember. RA does not (implying he is a product of the Temple?).

MrBMusicMan said...

I'm dying to know about competition 8...

ObFuSc8 said...

Hey ARGpeeps!

Congrats to Rachel for winning the last giveaway here and Barb for winning The Message in a Bottle. Congrats also to Amy Lynn and Thorsten on their Benrys!

Martyn, glad your day got better. Lisa, some people are just petty -- I think futureself has the right idea there :).

So what was Ben's motivation for coming back to the Island? I think this answer has to be as complicated as Ben himself. While he certainly may have felt the need to atone for Alex's death, I don't think was the only reason.

We should also ask what motivated Ben to even leave the Island to begin with. Ben turns the Wheel, knowing it will take him off-Island, not because he's saving Locke, but because he wants to remain a part of what he seems to think is Jacob's plan to move the Island. Ben may or may not have known that the chaotic time-skipping would occur once the Wheel was turned. Ben tags along with the O5 to return to the Island for the same reason he turned the Wheel, to remain part of all of what he still thinks is Jacob's plan -- and if at all possible to still fight to be the leader of the Others. Life on the Island is really the only life Ben has known (unlike our LOSTies). I'm not sure if what Ben said about the person turning the Wheel being "banished" is true or just another manipulation so Locke would let Ben turn the Wheel.

ObFuSc8 said...

RICHARD: If I take him, he's not ever gonna be the same again.

KATE: What do you mean by that?

RICHARD: What I mean is that, he'll forget this ever happened, and that...his innocence will be gone. He will always be one of us. You still want me to take him?

Richard only says that Benito will forget "this" ever happened, which to me implies that Benito would have some antegrade/retrograde amnesia for events surrounding his shooting and subsequent templification. Exactly how much is unknown, and it's possible that some parts of these memories came back over the years. Something certainly happened during little Ben's templification -- he went in dying and came out alive, seemingly healed.

I of course we get to see more of these details and the Temple itself in this final season.

ObFuSc8 said...

Ugh, that last sentence was supposed to read -- I of course hope we get to see...

Amy Lynn said...

If our Richard centric ep is early in the season, I bet we'll see what happened in the temple.

ObFuSc8 said...

Yeah, I can barely contain myself thinking about a Richard centric ep.

The 108th ep. should be the 5th episode of this final season.

maven said...

Congrats to all the winners today! There are so many giveaways and contests everywhere! :)

I agree that Ben came back to the island for revenge and the judgment of the Smoke Monster.

Amy Lynn said...

108 should air 2/23 then, I think.

mungonna said...

HAA!..What is being asked is..what the heck was season 5 all about?..What Was Season 5?

My view is that it was a " revere" a review of the past..a search for assignment of where things went wrong,,a search for the basic flaw,,the root cause. So, that assignment is a subjective determination..What happened , happened,,except when your memory of What Happened is different from What Actually Happened,,as is the case with most human's memories.

Therefore, young Ben..innocence..is changed over to the future,,to corruption..the opposite of innocence. The act itself,,remains hidden in mystery..Smokie ( conscience) is strongly suggested to be a participant in Ben's transformation or transcendence. Ben..as Deceit,,is like the means and ends deal. You can't have foul means to achieve Noble ends. Ben is the deceit of becoming of the belief that you Can have evil means to achieve Good ends. Corruption.

Will he find Love? He may witness it, but it will not be his ownership.

Is Richard telling the Truth? uhhmm..Richard seems to be .." the search for Truth"..the eternal search for Truth. So, in a sense,,he can only tell what he has seen..Thats as truthful as he can be. It will be interesting how RA plays out in season 6. Him and Flocke should have a very interesting exchange. Look for it.

What is the Temple,,its " magic"?
A temple is where we pray. What do we pray for? We pray for a future. Do we seek the fruit of our prayers in our ability to create? or do we seek the fruit of our prayers in a Jacob?

I see in my future..a small island in the middle of an ocean.

Something about the print "My name is Henry Gale . . . " by Mr. Slater is beautiful IMHO. The artist may not have been fully aware of Ben's story arc, but he does capture Mr. Emerson's quiet expression. So I guess I have trouble separating the two, the man and the character he plays when looking at the print. The man wins most days, kind and gentle. But sometimes, just as you turn away . . . he smirks.

Sincerely doubt I'm awake enough to make commentary about Lost but ;)

Seems like, in the line of many characters' "daddy issues" - Ben came back because, other reasons aside, he still desperately needs Jacob's approval. S5 finale, imo, was about as vulnerable as a guy can get whilst simultaneously murdering someone.

Of course contrasts like that are why I love Ben. Do wish I'd come out of the ARG/gallery show with a Ben-related image.

@Amy Lynn: yes the suggestion of Ben in love was giving me truly hilarious mental images . . . swelling music, flower-studded backgrounds, it was dreadful XD

The Losties are all pawns, we know this. The entire point of season 5 (to me at least) was, in basic terms:

Losties arrive. --> Young Ben is hurt.

Hurt Ben is taken to the temple, where Smokey / Esau / MIB programs/"corrupts" him so that he will kill Jacob.

Now that the game re-plays, if this doesn't happen, Sayid doesn't become the creepy hitman, Hurley will keep his marbles, and Jack won't be a boohoo alcoholic. Kate will probably still be irritating though.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In defense of the new design, there's actual meaning to the aesthetic instead of just having pillars on the sides for the sake of looking nice. Couldn't pass up the clocks/Jughead references.
