Prize 9 - Haiti Disaster Appeal - Update 300

You are all amazing, our progress with the appeal and competition we have so far been pledged this staggering amount of money -

$2210

A couple of questions have been asked a few times in the comments and via email so here are the answers :

- You don't have to enter multiple times, a single donation of $20 will be counted the same as 4 donations of $5 (plus a single donation is less work for us).

- The charity we will be donating the money too is SaveTheChildren.org.

Here is a brief description: Save the Children has worked in Haiti for 25 years with 100 staff on the ground providing food, water, shelter and child-friendly spaces. Because Save the Children's offices did not suffer the structural damage of other non-governmental organizations, other aid workers have taken refuge in the agency's compound, where operations are being run out of offices and tents

- 100% of the proceeds are being donated. We are not keeping any of the money for ourselves. We are also working with Paypal to eliminate any Paypal fees as well.

There is still time to enter until the end of Friday (01/22/10) - Click Here to see the competition details

I'm glad the total is that high. Although as someone else said, I'm also saddened by my odds. :)

Speaking of which, note to the admins: I've sent you one more email that -should- take care of everything. If not, please email me asap so we can sort it.

Now a question: When it says that a donation of $20 will be counted the same as 4 donations of $5, does that mean that you get -2- chances to win for each $5? The rules suggested that it was 2 for $5 and then 1 for each $5 after that. So now I'm confuzzled.

Also, positive thinking in action:

"The Olly Moss print -will- be mine. Either I will win it or whoever does will realize how sad UnseenPresence is about now having it and give it to him anyway."

*grin*
Never hurts to believe. I always clapped at Peter Pan, too.

That's a pretty sweet polar bear print, too!

That a pretty good sum of money collected. Congrats! I hope every penny of it and any profits from the prizes benefits the Haitians in need.

Red Dwarf references are really making me regret letting my brother have the DVDs! And I just found a Rimmer standee while cleaning, too, hah!

Etsy was a clever way to do the print release. Nice work from Leia Bell.

Slightly OT but strangely related too - just finished work for gallery (tho now they might not take it? *death*). Made a very different bear with the same pattern for Dharma polar bear, thinking to name him Charlie since he looks like a rocker unless I think of a different one. ;) And this guy was inspired by Daniel Danger's work! I've made two before, but in browns. The fruit has nothing to do with anything. Well, actually I've yet to finish the coconut the lime goes in, which I DID think of due to a reference in Lost! =_= Wow scary how that stuff sneaks in.

Ah I never have confidence in my work once I'm done with it lol. Suppose it's nice to imagine the Lost print folks were stressed too!

Cool beans bears and berries Anne- Ok the fruit looks a bit nuts.

Looks like the Polar Bear will be next to die on LOST!

ReverendMilo said...

So the odds are somewhere in the general neighborhood of 1 in 400 per $5?

that sounds like pretty great odds to me!

Amy Lynn, I was so afraid to click the link...Oh no!!!! Then relief and laughs.

Anne- Your creations are amazing. I am envious of your skill and talent.

ObFuSc8 said...

Hey ARGers!

Hope all our SoCal peeps are OK with all the rain, wind and possible mudslides.

I see Leia Bell sold her prints in her Etsy shop today. And then there were 2...

ChrisL, great framing pics. Still like seeing your Xmas present/Tshirt come back up.

Martyn -- glad today was better! That FoTC print is nice, thought about buying it for my brother.

The Warriors (Stout and Tan) and Stout's Monster Squad are all amazing, but I at a serious wall-space deficit already!

ObFuSc8 said...

ANNE!!!!

The Blue Rocker Bear turned out great! Which gallery commissioned it? I like the Danger inspired Stickling too -- are you going to put him on your site...

I'll email you.

Yeah, adam_keller -- she is quite talented!

Unknown said...

@adam_keller: lol sorry I went to have dinner XD I have to replenish my stock, I sold out of some stuff last week.

@andalone and JT: thank you :)

Ob: I was asked by a gallery called Art Whino in DC, very nice people, cool place (also underground/urban art like G88). Was in a group show there last summer. The more complicated stuff I don't put in my store - just on the site, so it's commission only.

Speaking of which if people wanted Lost polar bears, I may be able to work something out in the near future.

Hello everyone. Amy, I laughed really hard at the latest "DUI." I'm still here, folks, just fussing with my new computer!

Off topic, but if anybody wants to try for one of those Taweret replicas I picked up:

It's ever so slightly more pricey this time, but this tells me that the seller does have a mold and will probably be putting these out for awhile.

The Polar Bear has been drinking
Dan's necktie's asleep
The Oceanic 6 flew away, and left me all alone
The frozen donkey wheel is busted
Have you noticed that John Locke needs a haircut?
And Christian looks just like a prison mate?
And the Smoke Monster is out of cigarettes
As usual the VW Van's on the make
And the Polar Bear has been drinking, heavily
The Polar Bear has been drinking
And he's on the hard stuff tonight

The Polar Bear has been drinking
And you can't find your compass
Even with the Geiger counter
And I guarantee you that it will hate you
From the bottom of its glass
And all of your friends remind you
That you just can't go straight without It
The Polar Bear has been drinking

The Polar Bear has been drinking
And the episode started with one eye
And it can't see out of the other
And the bear tamer's got a plastic arm
And he showed up with his mother
And the Polar Bear has been drinking
Without fear of contradiction I say
The Polar Bear has been drinking

Because the Polar Bear has been drinking
And he's your friend not mine
Because the Polar Bear has been drinking
And he's not my responsibility

he Polar Bear has been drinking
And the beach sands are all on fire
And all the newspapers were just fooling
And TPTB have retired
And I've got a feeling that the Polar Bear has been drinking
It's just a hunch
The Polar Bear has been drinking and he's going to lose his lunch
And the Polar Bear has been drinking
Not Ana not Libby, The Polar Bear has been drinking not me

Crash update:

Thanks to all the Lost fans who've been patient and checking in for updates on the poster. I've been trying to get it out asap, but hardcore deadlines at work and the fact that they're sending me to Hong Kong for several days next week will delay it just a wee bit longer. I'd like to be in the states for the sale just to make sure nothing goes wrong and you get the goods on time. I've definitely read all of the recommendations and I'll announce a set date but make it a random time. That seems to be the popular choice. Just make sure your Paypal mailing addresses are up to date. I'll post the site when I return the 1st week of February along with further instructions. Again, thank you to everyone who's checked in and supported the project. And I apologize for not getting the poster out sooner. Your loyalty to the show and enthusiasm for the posters have made me really wish it was an open run that everyone could get their hands on. Here's to hoping another Lost poster series happens.

XXXHardcore said...

First week of February at least gives the bank account a chance to breathe. What say you, Daniel Danger?! I am sure he is in insane busy mode, too, and I hope we all hear from him soon. My eyes are on his prize.

Unknown said...

Yay, Eric Tan is alive!

kiwilostie said...

Thanks for the update Josh! We wait with bated breath...!

Team Jack said...

Oh please God do NOT make the first week of Feb while I am still in Hawaii, on the plane or driving home. *holds breath*

Team Jack said...

P.S. My previous post didn't seem to go thru... Bummed I missed Love Triangle. :-/ I liked it and $100 was such a deal!!! Darn.

XXXHardcore said...

For some, odd reason... I could not convince myself to buy Love Triangle. When someone posted the link for the second batch that went out today, I kept refreshing my browser, waiting a few seconds, refreshing again... and 1 was still constantly available! Until, finally, it sold, and the need to buy it for the sake of an adrenaline rush of an attempt subsided.

MilkcanRocks said...

Again, while I know the general feeling here towards The Love Triangle, I have to say it is one of the most impressive of the prints when you see it in person. Even with this second release, $100 for that print was a steal.

One of the best posters in this series, and the most underrated.

Martyn said...

Morning all!

Right, after a lot of decision, I've decided to sell one of my walt's kidnappings for how much it cost me. Only going to mention this once and really hope it doesn't change anyones opinion of me. So I'm upfront with the price, it will be $200 plus shipping.

If anyone wants it, email me at mgraham.0605328atgooglemail.com. Would rather someone on here have it than have to deal with EB or eBay.

Sorry for the mild interupption.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

morning Martyn, don't know why anyone should think badly of you for selling it at cost. looks like it's going to be a good but long day. got alot to do today. Hope your day is going well as well.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

Martyn, Red Dwarf is one of my all time favorite shows. I used to watch it on tv every night at bed time right after the Red Green show lol Now it's no where to be foundexcept on dvd I guess.

ChrisL said...

Martyn, Let me know how much interest you get in the WK. I may have a spare too!!

So do you have your WK in hand now? What do your think.

Morning Lisa.

futureself said...

Morning folks!

Lisa, move to the UK, Res Dwarf is on practically every night.

Martyn, selling at cost makes you a stand up guy IMO ;)

XXXHardcore said...

At cost for WK was $165, including shipping on the second round. $200 isn't a bad price, though.

futureself said...

I assume the 200 Martyn is talking about is what he bought it for off ebay though?

Anonymous said...

I probably cost $200 even from the artist if it was bought on the second sale and then got hit for customs.

Martyn said...

Well, if I ignite the f-word talk again, my opinion of myself will change, so I'd expect others would too. My day is going ok thank you. Good luck with your long day!

@ChrisL, it's not arrived yet but the money to Mitch has come out of my account, hence the decision. Last check, it was dispatched to the UK from NJ on Monday, so shouldn't be too long. I hope.

And yes futureself, it's the one I bought off eBay, not the resale from Drew himself.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

no fair Futureself ! It's one of my favorite shows ! I really need to get it on dvd. I wish it could be watched on line, I know everyone else here would love it too though they have never seen it.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

lol yeah I got both last posts of his twice and a couple minutes apart lol He's time skipping !

Drama said...

As for the Dan Danger print... he'll be putting up details next week, if things go according to plan.

Martyn said...

Lol @Zort, actually watched that episode last night!

@Lisa... I have a spare series 5 that I can give you, was going to give it away anyway, got the complete series and the Easter special for Xmas. Let me know if you want it and I'll send it to you tomorro!

XXXHardcore said...

@Ben

Are you in personal contact with Daniel Danger? If so, I'm absolutely envious!

Drama said...

on and off. He's a bit under the weather at the mo, so when he's well he wants to get on it and launch it.

XXXHardcore said...

@Ben
Yeah, touring in a van packed in with equipment and other people--no matter how long--can definitely take a physical toll every now and again. I certainly hopes he gets better soon... and that you and I get our "And that's why my hand was shaking..." print!

lostsailors said...

I haven't been commenting here as often just because life is busy, but this is AMAZING you guys. Wow, just really- keep going!

Drama said...

like i said, XXX, back of the line! hopefully, there will be enough for both of us. I'm going to have to sell / trade another DD print to fit it in, otherwise I'll have six in the house, and that's a bit much...

Lisa-Maladylis said...

Oh Martyn, that would be fantastic !! do you still have my email addy and address ? you'll be forever loved for that !

ChrisL said...

@Ben, Tom Waits reference not lost on me as MEL knows ;-)

@MEL, very nice re-write of a classic alcohol induced lullaby.

ChrisL said...

Martyn, Did I read right? Your DI Kit Blu-Rays play on your PS3?

Martyn said...

Sorry, called my constant, I'm all sorted now!

Martyn said...

@ChrisL...

Yeah, no idea why though, dunno if it's because I have the uk and it's saved the data from that on it.

@Lisa...

I should still have your details somewhere in my inbox. Actually, just resend it to be on the safe side.

ChrisL said...

Martyn, I just put mine on the shelf without thinking to try them as I have the S5 UK BR too. I'll try them tonight.

Martyn said...

I thought I'd check them out but was prepared for the worst.

In case anyones wondering, I'm replying so fast because the manager is off and no one is coming in the shop because of the rain. I love Anarchy!

Martyn said...

In regards to parcelforce, here's what they say about their charging system.

The charges on your parcel are Customs duty and/or VAT.  Goods sent from non-EU States, both new and used for business and personal use, as well as from Mail Order companies, are liable to attract Customs charges.  A part of the charge is the clearance/handling fee, which is payable to Parcelforce Worldwide.  This charge is to cover the cost of administration when Customs raise a charge on imported goods.

Unlike most other carriers, we generally do not charge for Customs clearance except where duty or VAT is payable.  In this case, we charge an Inbound Customs Clearance Fee, which covers the cost of presenting the parcel to Customs, opening and repackaging if necessary, paying the Customs duty or VAT on the addressee's behalf and collecting the payment from them.

A red label is attached to the parcel giving a breakdown of the charges.

If you feel the charge may be incorrect, you can query this with Customs.

Any queries about the clearance fee must be directed to our Clearance Fee Enquiry Team in writing.  They will respond directly to your letter within 28 days.

To avoid duplication, we would request that you do not contact us about this matter until the 28 days has lapsed.

In order to obtain a refund of the clearance fee you will need to send a copy of the reassessment letter from Customs to the Clearance Fee Enquiry Team. Parcelforce Worldwide will only refund the clearance fee if Customs refund the full charge on your parcel and this is the only channel to have any monies refunded where appropriate.

I do understand your concern and hope this information has helped to explain the process to you.

Please find below contact information for Customs and Parcelforce Worldwide.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

Hey, how come it says my donations to the Haiti relief fund are unclaimed ? do you have to go in and claim them or what will be going on ? Thanks !

andalone said...

Lisa, Just checked and mine says the same thing.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

thanks andalone, at least I know it's not a mistake then.

Martyn said...

Mine is unclaimed too.

ChrisL...

It's parcelforce, you're always waiting!

Just Thinking said...

I don't have unclaimed- just a PayPal receipt to Dennis. Did you get more than one email from PayPal?

Amy Lynn said...

JT, I think people are seeing the "unclaimed" status on the actual webpage, not on a receipt.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

JT, this is in my paypal account web site, not on the receipt. I got the receipts too so I was surprised to see it unclaimed. But maybe he will be doing it all on one fall swoop.

Anonymous said...

By the way UK'ers. If you fancy a fight, you can actually demand that Parcel Force release your item and invoice you later (which you can dispute or ask for justification).

It is illegal in the UK for any individual or company to delay the transit of the mail system for ransom or charge.

If pushed, Parcel Force have to comply. But some depots don't realise and refuse.

Their legal dept understand this. Thats why, if you look at the small print on the charges document they ask if you have a problem paying the "delivery" part of the charge, to get in contact.

They have worded everything very carefully so you think you HAVE to pay it, but they don't actually say it.

Just Thinking said...

Oh- I see. Yes, my Paypal account is also unclaimed.

Just Thinking said...

Ok guys- I listened to Midnight Lullaby (http://s0.ilike.com/play#Tom+Waits:Midnight+Lullaby:277735:s2412710.8516559.2484.0.2.133%2Cstd_98e1a97e9d904f60bc10b31dc2fcd142) by Tom Waits to see if that is Mels tune- but it did not seem to fit.

Is there another?

I can somehow see Mel sitting with a frothy glass musing on his 1/1 Polar Bear print and spinning that mystery for us.

ChrisL said...

ioioos, that's a cracking bit of info on the postal service. I wish I had the time or energy for a battle with Parcelforce, I would so go for it!

@unclaimed paypal, I'm pretty sure that this is just a part of the process depending on a number of factors relating to the type of account you have or the way you fund Paypal. I'm sure it's nothing to be concerned about and that Dennis or Zort are on the case.

ChrisL said...

Just Thinking, The track to listen to is "The Piano Has been Drinking (Not Me)" by TW.

ChrisL said...

But you could do yourself a favour and listen to the first 5 TW albums in their entirety, particularly Blue Valentine, my particular fave.

ChrisL said...

And the live album "Nighthawks at the Diner" too.

OK , that's me all done plugging Tom Waits. Normal service resumed.

Drama said...

I'm not done. Raindogs transformed my understanding of music. Waits is the best storyteller the music world has ever seen. Over a thirty year career, I can only think of two albums that are "for fans only", and even they have some dynamite tracks. Waits is INCREDIBLE. For a good jump in point, try Mule Variations, then go to Small Change and Raindogs. Go now, I'll wait.

Sam G said...

If anyone is interested detail for the final LOST weekend is up on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=204160313950

ChrisL said...

Ben, It's interesting to hear you say that. I wonder how old you are. No need to reveal. I've found many people fall into the 'early' or 'late' Waits camp. I'm an early Waits guy for the beauty of the melody and the incredible humour. Although I do love and admire the experimentation of the work from Raindogs on I can't listen to them with regularity whereas "Small Change" or "Foreign Affairs" I return to again and again.

Anonymous said...

@ChrisL

I'm the same. Its only time stopping me having the fight. That and the fact that I don't want my print stuck at a depot for months. There are quite a few consumer forums with people who fought and won.

By the way Chris, where did you get your frames made, any of the on-liners or local?

Unknown said...

So we have until tonight for the Haiti contest, right?

ChrisL said...

ioioos,

The customs charge was a VAT charge and it was on The Statue.

My frames were lovingly handcrafted by Bob the framer, one of those great old guys that's been doing that one thing their whole lives. We've had some great chats off the back of this lot. Not cheap but it's that personal care and attention that's so important with these prints. Actually, when I went to one of those on-line personal frame creation sites it turned out only 10% or so less than I'm paying so they're clearly not that cheap either.

thorsten said...

Sounds like I will go Bob the Framer too, Chris!

I know who Tom Waits is. Some years ago stole my father's CD; was quite fascinated with The Piano Has Been Drinking. I also quite fancy Earth Died Screaming. But I suppose I'm more familiar with his acting career than his music, lol! He really was quite excellent in Imaginarium.

Is there anything interesting in the Facebook post? I don't have an account. (Yeah, I know, very uncool.)

It seems that a lot of countries are getting LOST the day after it's aired in America. Excpet England of course which is on the Friday. If it were on tv the Wednesday after US airing, I wouldn't need to resort to d/ling it each week.

On train back home now so will get back to you in a bit islandwales and begin packaging up red dwarf for you Lisa. Just hope I didn't lend it to my gf and forgot. Pretty sure I didn't though.

@ioioos...

Thanks for that slice of fried gold, but alas, I'm too impatient and wanted my poster. If it weren't for me, I'd probably argue as to why other items aren't taxed, but they'd probably mark my address for constant tracking or something.

Random. Someone posted the 24/LOST mash up on MetaFilter, and I thought this comment was pretty neat:

Impressive. I've seen those scenes plenty of times, and yet by 7:00 it was raising goosebumps everywhere. There's something about getting intimate with each person's experience and juxtaposing them that's strikes deeper than the actual show has done. That's some nice fan work when you can go toe-to-toe with the original editors.
