Deus ex machina 542

Wow. That was a busy week, and nerve-racking. A lot of people received refunds from Todd Slater last night. Now we have the weekend to prepare for the next drop, Kevin Tong for The Hatch.

Kevin will sell 45 copies via his online store for $200 each, plus shipping. The Hatch will go on sale Monday January 11, 2010 at noon PST… which is Greenwich Mean Time minus 8 hours. Kevin placed everything you need to know in his Newsletter.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

It's time for my trade post! :D

1) I have Jacob's Cabin.
I'm searching for Smoke Monster, Ben Linus and Dharma Van.

I am proposing this:
Jacob's Cabin + cash FOR Smokey + one from Ben Linus and Dharma Van.

2) Love Triangle still for sale shipping included in the US for 135$

AND cash for smoke monster AND ben Linus/Dharma Van? Living on cloud 9 aren't you?

Amy Lynn said...

The shipping alone from Italy has got to be outrageous!

mungonna said...

I think specificity is needed here. How does one say "specificity" in Italian? I hope its easier than in English.

I'd give JC plus cash
I'd receive Smokey and Ben/DharmaVan.

ImAnnie --

i think that most would argue that the Smokey poster right now is higher than the Cabin, so asking for Smokey plus another print that's probably about $200ish for the Cabin and cash would only work if its a lot of cash.

Just my opinion of course - I'm guessing that's where the confusion is :)

Amy Lynn said...

@drsluggo... I'd say JC is still more valuable. I guess my point was that if you're hawking the same posters to the same people every day, and they aren't buying it, they probably aren't going to change their minds.

ChrisL said...

MEL! You just caused me to say "specificity" 10 times and STILL not get it. It's 11pm UK and the wine has been flowing since lunch. That's my excuse anyway.

mungonna said...

..specificita!!,,See!! all the difference in the world. That just rolls of the tongue,,specificita! Its that ity that the English put on it that screws it all up. I think we should quit English a make Italian the world language!

momma mia!!
MEL

Unknown said...

@ Amy -

That's a good point as well.. I thought Smokey was a bit higher but it really doesn't matter because the poster market is all screwy right now with all of these drops lately.

But...

I know someone on here has a Polar Bear for $200 they want to get rid of too! ;)

Amy Lynn said...

@drsluggo... I will chip in for that $200 polar bear. AWESOME DEAL

thorsten said...

We Krauts call it SPEZIFIZIEREN, for sure ;))

Martyn said...

That makes a lot more sense now imannie.

In my opinion, there are 4 tiers. In the bottom tier you have the love triangle, hurleys curse, four toed statue, the barracks. Tier 3, polar bear, ben Linus, dharma van, the swan station, walt's kidnapping. Tier 2 you have rt, smoke monster, the hatch, Jacobs cabin, LOST. Tier one, the crash and lockes secret.

I know it's everyones opinion but this is the way I see people value the posters when it comes to trading. So to get dd, you have to trade two tier threes or fours.

Or I'm just losing the plot.

Amy Lynn said...

At Martyn.... I agree about the levels, but I'd put it this way:

Bottom: Numbers, Polar Bear, Love Triangle, Van, Swan, LOSt
Middle: Ben, Walt, Statue, Crash
Top: Smokey, Hatch, Locke's Secret, Cabin

Unknown said...

@ Amy ..

There's no way that the Crash poster is not in the top tier. That and Locke's Secret are the top two 'value wise.'

ChrisL said...

Amy, does that mean I can have Rousseau's Transmission for free please?

Amy Lynn said...

I wasn't talking value, necessarily, but artistic interpretation. If Kate looked remotely good, it'd be much higher for me.

Amy Lynn said...

Oh, I forgot about Transmission! I'd put that middle tier, too.

thorsten said...

A Locke went for 1.800 dollars on ebay this week,
and the crashes will get the same or more. None of the other 14 pulled that much money…

ChrisL said...

*hopes dashed*

futureself said...

In my meager opinion The Crash is on par with Locke's Secret, with Jacob's Cabin second.

Martyn said...

Yeah, value wise I meant. Otherwise, my pyramid would look a hell of a lot different.

Crash would be tier 3 for me.

DvdBos said...

Well, i see it this way (probably i will mess up with my English: be patient).

JC is less valuable than Smokey NOW.
But when DD will sell his copies, its price will fly like Smokey did, because there will be A LOT of requests for 45-50ish copies (likely this will happen for the Hatch tomorrow, i'll stay out of troubles :D).

I think that JC will mantain its price high for the next months, because of DD popularity, while Smokey will drop a little. That's why i think that JC is more valuable than Smokey (which i badly want).

I like the Hatch too, but i gave up on it: between the two, i like smokey a lot more.

Ben Linus and Dharma Van: i like them, that's why i will throw some cash. Because JCSMOKEY, JC+CASH==SMOKEY+ONEofTHEM.

About proposing the same trade every day to the same people, Amy: LOSTARGS has WAY MORE followers than we all think.
For every line i write here, at least 2emails arrive in my address.

That's why i'm keeping this updated. It's more "followed" than the thread dedicated to trade/sell down at STV. :)

(che fatica).

The problem with being surrounded by such great art is realising how crap your own artistic endeavors are. I've spent the last hour sketching out a CU of Eloise stricken with angst over the pain of Daniel asking her 'will it make you proud of me?' and it's bleh! You guys are never going to get to see it ;)

Now, that Fizi is a nice touch Thor. Can't deny the excitement of the bubblie going up the back of the nose.SpeziFizieren..it effervesces in the saying. AAh.. but the Italian, specificita,,that just rolls like olive oil on fresh home made bread.

Amy Lynn said...

Value wise, I think LOST will probably lose its value the quickest. It's the least art-like piece, really only appeals to diehard fans, and is flooded in the market, because of the hundreds of lithographs that were given out.

DvdBos said...

VALUE:

1) Crash, Locke's Secret: about 1800$. unbelievable.
2) Smokey, LOST, JC, Hatch and maybe RT. About 400 each.
3) Ben, Walt, 4toed, DharmaVan, Swan, Numbers. About 200 and less.
4) LoveTriangle, Barracks, PolarBear, 150down$.

IMHO: 1) Smokey, Walt, LOST, Ben, Crash, Locke's, Hatch, DharmaVan, JC in order.
2) The rest.

Martyn said...

I love JC, and I think it's probably on the border of tier one and two. But at the same time, I think it could be Just about straight swapped for smoke monster but not for Locke or crash. Maybe it deserves it's own level thinking about it. Level 1.5.

thorsten said...

haha, Fizi, MEL, you crack me up!

;))

DvdBos said...

In 6 months the ONLY ones that will keep (or gain) value are:

Crash, Locke, JC and MAYBE The Hatch and Polar Bear.
The others will lose value, sadly.

I LOVE STOUT'S LOST, it fits perfectly. It's like a poster from a movie you see at the theatre.

Smokey, RT, Ben, Walt, 4toed, dharmavan, swan, numbers, lovetriangle, barracks will lose and fall.

Amy Lynn said...

If LOST were better drawn, I think it'd retain it's value.

Easy Guys..needed is a market analysis or two. Prices are being determined by market forces..not any one individuals likes, dislikes..or their feel of the market..Numbers and analytical kno how is what is required.

Unfortunately , as said, the market rite now is in ...excessive irrational exuberance mode. Buyers are willing to pay based on ..their feel of need,,rather than rational thought...quite the Greenspan of me , huh?...Anyway...to go out on the limb and try to define this market with any ..oh schitt..specificita'..is denying its true state.

If you're in the market now..as either buyer or seller or both..heck, go for it..Just kno that Money or Poster exchanged..isn't connected to the Personal Value of what you end up with...So be sure.. how you feel today..is going to be how you feel about the prints tomorrow. Capece?

WALT. Why? Van Gogh style, and personal motivations (arrived the day my cat died): Status: have it.

HATCH. Why? So blue. :D Status: missing, i'll never have it, doesn't matter.

SMOKEY. Why? It says "Buy Me Davide". Status: missing. I will have it with the help of JC.

BEN LINUS. Why? Creepy. Status: missing.

DHARMA VAN. Why? I like VW. Status: missing.

6 posters are too much. I'm pointing to have 4 at the end of it all. One has to be Smokey.

By this time tomorrow, I look on course to shutting the hell up about Walt's Kidnapping. Been watching the eBay sidebar all day!

Patrick said...

The Crash did not sell today on ebay at $1400, while the Locke's are sitting in the $800 range. Those are the top tier without a doubt.

The Hatch and Lost are probably second tier as the latter is leveling off just above $400. Who knows with The Hatch: I was offered one for $275 a couple weeks ago and now can't get a response from the seller. No one is selling them or listing them on ebay. It's my favorite out of the group and I'm so anxious for tomorrow.

BTW, again in the comic book art world, prints are generally overprinted by about 10%. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here. I spoke to one of my comics contacts and he said he's done that many over on each and keeps them in case of losses, damages or other printing defects. Ususally, they just are "numbered" A/P's. I would say with pretty high confidence that's where the 1/1's fro G1988 come from and not part of the original 300.

Martyn said...

I once was like you. I'll only buy one. Got Dharma Van. Then The Hatch was released. And then I missed The Swan Station. Then Jacob's Cabin was released. Then I was desperate for Swan Station and bought The Polar Bear. Then I traded Polar Bear for Swan Station and Love Triangle. Then I wanted Walt's Kidnapping more because I had obtained The Swan Station.

Don't you get it? You won't stop until you have all the ones you want. I will eventually end up with 5 of these posters on my wall, and have had 7 in my possession. It's an illness, I'm sick. Someone shoot me!

I was with this from Comic Con. It is my first arg. When I saw The Numbers I was unimpressed. But then Locke's Secret sauntered in the door and I fell in love at first sight. Dharma Van left me disappointed. Yet again I was blown away by The Crash. Until Rousseau's Transmission I felt cold (although for the first time, I felt yearning for the one that got away...The Statue. I tried to suduce Danger but failed...yet encaptured Benry on a tipsy birthday spree. Lost would have been a trophy prize but I can do without it. The others....well, I can live without ;)

Sooooooooooo glad i have no will power, ignored doc arzt but stuck with dcaapb during the creepy guy who wanted to kill paul scheer and the ABC lot break in. TBH, didn't even know there was a comment section on the site. Anyway, followed from the beginning but didn't have the awesome student bank account when Locke's Secret and The Crash came out. Could of bought the Crash but thought Dharma Van was better. Still sort of maintain that thought to be honest, just too much Lost thrown in your face. but then the bank account came and so did the beautiful Hatch came out and the rest is history. Been spending money I don't have to have awesome posters and an awesome holiday to Hawaii, all thanks to this ARG. May not have been as well laid out as The Lost Experience but it brought me to a new online family who I wouldn't trade for the world.

In other news, I'm struggling to put this tactfully, but it's getting a little wearing seeing the same people advertise the prints each day. I think there's definite cause for ARGers to offer up prints to each other, don't get me wrong, but if you are hardcore about buying and selling, and come here on a daily basis to make offers that people don't take up, wouln't it be better to just open an expressobeans profile and list them where people are actually looking? or ebay them? jumping prices and offers around daily makes it seem as if money is the motivator here, so why not sell through proper channels? perhaps I'm out of order here, perhaps not. Just thinking out loud.

Hello, LostARGs. I've been following the poster adventures since the Crash reveal, and have been lurking this site the entire time. Since the beginning, I've managed to purchase The Smoke Monster, Walt's Kidnapping, and The Barracks from the original sales. The collector inside me yearns for the rest of the series (mostly "LOST", as I've been a fan of Tyler Stout for some time), but I realize this will never be. Seeing as the new wave of sales is well beyond my current financial situation, I've come to tell of my experiences with the Damon Carlton and a Polar Bear website, and other aspects of the ARG that have sprouted since its inception.

When I found out about DCaaPB and visited, my first thought was "I can't believe I missed out on that Locke poster". I waited several weeks waiting for a print that I enjoyed, passing up The Crash (seems silly now), The Love Triangle, and The 4-toed Statue. When The Smoke Monster was revealed, I waited, credit card in hand, for the reveal. For this reveal and each one since, I used a Firefox addon called ReloadEvery, which proved very useful. When time came for the "Buy Now" button to appear, either the page would load impossibly slow, or it would return a 403 error. As soon as it was up, I created an account and purchased the print. It's still sitting in its tube, waiting for a frame.

The Hatch came next. No luck, as I was asleep for the reveal. I passed on Rousseau's Transmission, and next week saw The Swan Station, I was excited. However, I did not enter my information quick enough to purchase it.

The next week that changed. With the discovery of LastPass, and the reveal being at the lovely hour of 1 A.M., I managed to be one of the first to purchase Walt's Kidnapping. Just like The Smoke Monster, it sits in its tube, waiting to be framed.

After that was Jacob's Cabin. For that reveal I trekked up to San Francisco to visit the Super7 store with my brother and his girlfriend. His apartment was a bit far from the store, so he and I sat on two separate computers, refreshing like mad to purchase the print. This marked the first time I had horrible bad luck with the site, as while his computer showed the Buy Now button and he proceeded to the next step (and failed at the last moment), my screen, though refreshing often, never stopped showing "On Sale Soon". Alas.

The Barracks went smoothly, and the print is keeping the other two company. For both Ben Linus and The Polar Bear I had troubles loading the page in time. When LOST went on sale, I had the idea of entering the order URL directly into my browser when it was time for the print to be sold. As LOST was by Tyler Stout, I tried my hardest to get it. However, though going to the order URL went fine, when I logged in my cart was empty. I went back to the "Buy Now" page and went through the motions from there, only to get to the final step just a moment too late, so close that I managed to get a confirmation email from GoMerch (though not DCaaPB).

Thus ended the first run of the prints. I managed to snag three, which I am content with. When I found out that the artists themselves were selling the extra prints I hope to be able to get Locke's Secret, but it turned out to go on sale when I was in class. So I leave you The Hatch- and The Crash-hopefuls with some tipes. Use ReloadEvery and LastPass, and you might have an easier time with your purchase. Good luck with the sales, and I'll see you all on February 2nd, ready to go.

I had a short, but cool none-the-less, convo with Olly Moss just now over teh interwebz. He said that the Lockes will ship out this week and that he is paying someone from the UK to do it for him. Rejoice!

Olly was an awesome dude. Good luck at your new job!

Morning folks,

@Lost, that's a great tale, thanks for joining in and sharing...

@Ben, I think a few here may be feeling the same about the regular sales pitches. It seems only to have come about since the artists drops began but does become hard work sometimes.

@Charter, cool to have the Olly chat.

And those that posted links for the Special, Thank you. Need to find some time in the day to take a look.

Excited and hopeful about today.

Working my way through some of the artists websites. I was looking at some of Daniel Danger's prints - I really like his work.

@patmc, sounds like some really great framing ideas. I'm hoping to get one or two of mine framed soon (not brave enough to do it myself).

Here's a lot of hypotheticals:

If someone managed to get The Hatch tomorrow (or already has one) and wanted to trade it, would they be interested in my Rousseau's Transmission or Walt's Kidnapping for it? Anyone willing to try for The Hatch tomorrow just to trade it? The universe must maintain a balance.

@Lost (can't believe no one took that name earlier), welcome aboard, and thanks for the tips!

ChrisL, good morning, and the same to the other folks across the oceans getting ready to join us today.

@sam g, Daniel Danger was the first artist I bought non-Lost screenprints from. Excited to see what he comes us with next.

Cosmically Yours

@ Sam G - I got four DD prints for christmas, that was one of them. Print 6 of that run, no less. it's awesome!

Sam and Ben, I got that one too...still waiting for it to arrive though ~ getting a bit worried as it was shipped before Christmas. I also bought Ghost Ship, which is stunning!

After a lot of soul searching (and color matching in my rooms!) I'm interested in trading my Locke's Secret for The Crash if anyone is interested.

I framed it myself for now, until I can afford to get them all done. My Javverwock is framed (dark green stain on the wood, black mount, and looks stunning) Tennenbaums and "I didn't hear you arrive, didn't hear you go" (which is my favourite) are with the printers, and "I'd sink to your streets" I framed myself and looks really good.

@Jason.

I'm looking to trade Lockes Secret for The Crash.

I love both, but something has to give in home decor! I have a long dark green wall with 20 artist prints on it. I've allotted space for 3 Lost prints.

One slot is already taken with my Season 2 "message in a bottle" painting promo print, signed by the entire cast.

Slot two is going to Swan Station, rotating with Polar Bear.

The last slot is going to Ben Linus, roting with......what was going to be Lockes Secret, but I think The Crash will suite the room better!

Ahh rite... Yeh, I dont think Locke's Secret goes with a dark green wall as the print itself is already green.

funny reading back through all the posts I missed. Glad you got the print @Rev, nice addition. I had no idea that is what they call a printer print.
Looks like your having a blast @Zort. Love all the photos ! That ice isn't in Florida is it ? Love the parrots on the head, but no, they don't eat seeds @mel, they have a liquid diet of fruit type drink. they are called Lorikeets (I know, useless info by Lisa) Looks like everyone is having fun trading and swapping or at least trying to. I still have to frame my Polar Bear and hang it up.

Are photocopying prints for personal use legal? Cause since Locke's Secret is worth over 1000 dollars now, I'm pretty sure I cant afford it.

Anonymous said...

@ Jason.

Thats a good point. I think technically its illegal, but if you are not selling the copy, and you are displaying in in a private home, no one can know anyway.

If they are not allowed to print any more, I bet most of the artists would love that fact that their work is so popular people are resorting to bootlegs!

Unknown said...

Haha.. yeh

ChrisL said...

Jason. Unfortunately, as we know, everyone reads what goes on here from the artists to TPTB. Now you've mentioned it they'll be sending the Bootleg Police round to yours!

Unknown said...

Huh? I dont have Locke's Secret. I was just curious cause if it IS legal, I would like a copy however if it is, so be it.

ChrisL said...

I should have added a ;-) to that jason. I seriously doubt anyone would have a problem with you making a copy for your own use.

ChrisL said...

In case anyone has missed it, the latest competition is up on the home page with some stunning prizes!

Unknown said...

Oh rite. Sorry, its hard to detect cheekiness over the web :P

Unknown said...

Anyway, if it is not illegal and anyone wouldn't mind, can they make me a full-sized, high quality photocopy of Locke's Secret. I'll pay for all costs. I promise its only for personal use and nothing else. Email me at ajlim2005@hotmail.com

Thanks.
