Open The Hatch 406

Kevin Tong will open the Hatch and sell 45 copies via his online store for $200 each, plus shipping. Today, at noon PST… which is Greenwich Mean Time minus 8 hours. Kevin placed everything you need to know in his Newsletter.

Further Instructions:
The poster will appear on the far left of the side scrolling store. There is no link other than the one mentioned below. Don’t bother with back end stuff (cheaters!), the code will not exist until the moment of the sale.

I strongly suggest that once you have the item in your cart that you check out and make the purchase immediately. I am not sure if adding it to your cart will hold it, but purchasing it is a surefire way to secure your copy of “The Hatch”.

I have had some inquiries about the shipping cost. If you do not select the proper cost for where you live ($210 USA, $215 everywhere else), I WILL cancel the order and return the item to the inventory. I will not adjust or take later payments. PLEASE do not try to order more than one poster, the order will be canceled. If you successfully ordered a poster and do not get a refund email in two hours, then you are good to go, just sit back and relax. Before emailing me with questions, please refer to this blog post as I will issue updates.

1. Make sure you have the right time zone figured out.

2. Make sure the credit card or bank account associated with your paypal is good (right info and sufficient balance). The best way is to have the amount needed in your paypal account, so the purchase will go over smoothly.

3. Make sure the address associated with your paypal account is current.

4. Make sure you add colt83 at gmail to your contact list. That way, the shipping confirmation email will not get spammed.

______________

UPDATE: I have set the print at $215 and will offer $5 refunds to US customers who buy it. Please check my blog (tragicsunshine.com/newsletter) for the final updates. I will be AFK for a while as I am driving Olly Moss to his first day of work in the United States. You read that correctly.

Plus, they made a little video together…

Kevin stopped by in the comments again and posted another update: Please check your email (the one associated with your paypal account/transaction). If you do not see a refund email, THEN YOU ARE SAFE! Several refunds had to be made because despite setting the inventory, paypal let a few slip by before capping it off. Which orders got refunds was determined by who came after the first 45 orders. I am really sorry for those of you who got refunds or didn’t make it in time. I will be adding more updates tonight, so please check back in here.

Stout, Tan, Millward, Danger, and Bell by my count.

So no one else got the 'this seller doesn't accept mastercard as a payment' thing on PayPal?

Man... I got right in... I thought ti was just going to well and i guess it was.

Jason said...

Now we know how Desmond felt.

Martyn said...

Daniel Danger's and Eric Tan's are going to be very very messy. Going to try for the DD print for a person who helped me out in the past, really hope i'm fast enough for these re-sells, haven't really tried for any.

And whoever asked, I use my iMac for poster buying, seems to run a hell of a lot faster than my PC in these sort of situations.

Unknown said...

I hope that Tan and Danger put theirs up at an unspecific time on a weekend. It will give the die-hard fans a bit more advantage.

Chrcowan said...

This was a real heart-breaker for me. Now I actually HOPE someone flips it. Imagine!!

Browser was just too slow I guess. Never got a chance.

I'm guessing Danger is working on a plan to prevent the flippers. He is known for cancelling flippers orders so he know's that they are circling around his print.

bad form indeed!

That bastard!

To those curious about methods: I have a Mac, running Firefox. Shut everything else off, but got screwed by RefreshEvery! It didn't actually reload the page so I didn't see the link (first time I've had it do that but still)! SO STUPID I should have just done it manually. I knew something was wrong too.

Stay away from that program you guys, it's not worth the chance that it screws you.

I will not welcome our robot overlords :P

@Patrick, Jason, Richrootes: we shall crack open a virtual bottle of MacCutcheon's.

Unknown said...

anyone know where i can see more photos of "The Hatch" besides on lostargs?

XXXHardcore said...

I think that is one of the greatest aspects of this entire community--the artists actually getting involved and, for the most part, intending to assist the true fans that want their one poster for themselves with no intent to flip. With Eric Tan's blurb about it being at least a couple of weeks (maybe the flipper-side will stop paying attention?), I am actually surprised we haven't received a statement from Daniel Danger. But then again, I'm sure he is a very busy dude!

ChrisL said...

Language please gents. You're right though, what an ****

oruga_xxx said...

Well, I hope Eric does that. The only 2 prints I have left are the ones which have to go on sale again: The Crash and Jacob's Cabin.

I hope we have a chance!!!

BTW, congrats to anyone who got a Hatch! :)

Google Images does a fine job :) Really, I've checked for "The Hatch Kevin Tong" before. Good!

vabauer said...

ObFuSc8 and everyone in the forum: is there a poster or other reproduction of the hatch secret Dharma map (like the one in your profile pic...) ?

@vabauer

12:00:37 here!

@Richrootes

I've been really lucky This time round. But that luck seems to tie in with when I stopped using the Mac and started using a PC with Chrome. I have got a poster every time since.

I don't think I'll bother starting the Mac up again.

ChrisL said...

I would never have got anywhere near that without Kevin stepping in and leveling the playing field.

Thanks Kevin (whether I get refunded or not).

Unknown said...

Sory bout the language ChrisL. Anyway, Arnold stated that he didn't get one.

Unknown said...

Well if anyone wants to trade or sell let me know... thanks!

vabauer said...

I don't think it has to do with the OS, let's not get into that war here! It has to do in my opinion with three things only:

- Connection Speed (including how far you are from the server in terms of number of routers between your ISP and their ISP)
- Computer Speed, a fast, relatively new CPU and lots of RAM
- Sheer Luck (or Fate...)

Martyn said...

@Anne...

I used check4change on Firefox on my PC, while profusely refreshing on my Mac. Sometimes manual isn't any good either. For Jacob's Cabin, my girlfriend got the Buy Now on her iPod Touch before I did, refreshed as fast as I could and got through and bought.

Still not sure how I managed to get that poster, I think I was aided by Rev and Thorsten's fake URL, to which I think I owe them deeply for!

Major, major drag on The Hatch. Got hung up with payment method. It seems that they only took cash. No luck so far on any of the second chance offerings. Oh well, guess I will continue to try for the remaining prints. Maybe my luck will change with The Crash or LOST.

vabauer said...

wow, I do think flipping sucks but it's almost unavoidable, even if you had people stay out all night in the freezing cold to show they're LOST fans, you'd still get people that are trying to make a living.

In these difficult times, it's been my true test of fandom not to sell my Locke's secret that cost me $50 and I could flip for over a $1,000 profit, if my wife found out, she'd be the one flipping over!

ObFuSc8 said...

So that went really weird for me. I was refreshing manually and everything up until 12 PT seemed to be fine, slightly slower refreshes each time. But then at 12 PT, when the link should have popped up, but it didn't.

The link didn't show up for me until well after 12 PT, nearly 12:01, I am just wondering if I'm having some type of caching problem?

I was trying for someone else too, and am a whole different flavor of sad since I couldn't even get in for them.

Lol. The Locke's Secret Tshirts are selling for over 100.

vabauer said...

I think it might be fair if they let the artists auction 10-15 of these prints, at least if they go up to the levels we've seen, they will be compensated directly, it's their work and talent that should be rewarded beyond what we have been spending.

Tim said...

In defense of flippers:

I know everybody seems to hate flippers, and I'm not real fond of them myself, especially when I'm trying to go after a poster. But I've tried 12 times now, counting DCAAPB.com and the artists selling theirs and the only one I've gotten was the 4 toed statue that went up at a random time. I've been able to purchase 1 other from a flipper and we'll probably get another, because I feel confident that I will never be fast enough to get one. So for someone like me, who's tried and tried, where else can I get one other than the flippers. The Lost folks knew what they were doing when they decided to only do 300 of these, it means a lot of people are going to be left out and while I understand that the flippers are keeping people from getting them in the rush, so are the people that already have 10+ posters while there are some of us who can't get one. I don't begrudge anyone who is able to get one, but when it comes down to it, I don't want to be left without any because I'm not as fast as someone else, so I'll gladly pay a few hundred dollars to get something that I want very bad. I get that people don't like the flippers, but it's just part of it, so let it be, ultimately it's going to end up in the hands of another TRUE Lost fan who desperately wants it. It may not be the best, but until they decide to issue 2000 more Smoke Monster's, then it will just have to be this way and personally I don't think it's that bad. Just my thoughts, don't throw stones :)

Unknown said...

Not fair Capostar, is it?

Joey said...

maybe I should have said Hatch for a Ben.

The print's I do not have yet are Locke's Secret, The Crash, The Hatch, and Jacob's Cabin. (Also the print version of LOST)

So if anyone wants my Ben Linus for any of those, let me know :-)

Unknown said...

@Jason: they're WHAT? o_O It's too bad I've got a passionate dislike for flipping - I have an extra tee which I was waiting for this print sale to finish to post about.

Admittedly I did get seriously crushed in the crowd to get it :P How much is that worth lol.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know if G88 still has any of the tees for walk-ins?

capostar said...

wont' sell my only print though...

*ralph wiggum voice* NEV-ERRRRRRRRR!!!

Unknown said...

Hahaha. Don't we all? Just not this way..

Unknown said...

@Tim: I can see your point. If nothing else, it's inevitable; unless there's some kind of quiz before the sale hah. I think part of how I define flipping has to do with the start price on auctions. BIN @twice original price I have a problem with. Auction starting @cost and letting the market decide the rest is, at least, the more ethical way to flip. IMHO.

ChrisL said...

I can only echo Thorsten's words...

Flipping is just really bad karma.

Unknown said...

@anne - I know. These shirts are worth so damn much. I would consider getting one but they dont seem to be selling anything but Large.

Unknown said...

What size is anybody looking for? I'm not sure if anyone wants a small or medium ;) Sorry to use stereotypes ROFL!

Martyn said...

Gotta say, I had to succumb to giving money to flippers to get my Walt's Kidnapping. Would of preferred to give it to Drew Millward, he chose posterandtoys.com which annoyed me with Smoke Monster, so I lost it and bid on it and bought I Kill The Bus Driver. Can't buy anymore prints now, no more. Seriously. Maybe one more.

Unknown said...

@ Anne -- did they ever have XL?

The Kharma Initiative said...

This is a guess, but I think Mastercard/credit cards were not allowed in this sale because they allow for chargebacks, where the purchaser can get their money back. That can mess us a limited, fast sell-out like this, even if the seller hadn't already sent out the merch.

@Anne, comixguru said there were still some Locke shirts available for walk-ins at the Gallery. This was on Friday at the He-Man reception. She bought a few and got to meet Olly Moss!

Cosmically Yours, not counting chickens

Unknown said...

I would love a small sized Locke's Secret shirt.

Unknown said...

I know I've asked this already but I'm desperate. Assuming its not illegal, is anyone willing to photocopy me a high-quality Locke's Secret (for personal use only). If so, I'll pay for all costs. Only if it is NOT illegal. If it isnt, email me at ajlim2005@hotmail.com

Ill post again the list I have and how much I paid for them toward the end of the week.

Hi everyone. Big LOST fan, but first poster here. I can't believe I didn't know about this site! You guys are awesome. Kevin's website said all refunds would come within 2 hours...have there been any or was everyone that got through successful? Congrats to those of you that did!

Tim said...

The whole chaos surrounding this does make me wonder how insane the Auction in June is going to be. I'm trying to save some money to get something, but I think everything is going to go really high.

ChrisL said...

Jason, I'm not sure anyone who has a Locke's Secret is going to want to be dragging to a copy shop and sticking it on a copier. Sorry, I just think it's a little unlikely. Why not get the best quality you can from the net and take the file somewhere to print out a good copy?

Unknown said...

It's 8am in Aus right now. I literally haven't slept all night. I'm going to bed now. Cya guys.

JFuller said...

@Tim - Im assuming you're talking about the Profiles in History auction? If so, then it will be pretty smooth. Ive been a screen used prop collector for about 5yrs now and have bought and sold through PIH. There wont be any problems with it

DvdBos said...

Auction? June?

Did i miss something? :|

Jason, if you want :p

ChrisL said...

Hi smellmysocks73 :-) No refund here yet.

Unknown said...

I know ChrisL that it is highly unlikely but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Unknown said...

If i want what Annie?

Tim said...

@JFuller, yeah, I agree I think they're going to do a great job. I guess I'm just thinking with the demand for these posters the way they've been, I think prices could be sky high. I know auctions for shows like Battlestar have brought great prices, I just think there is a chance this will dwarf those.

DvdBos said...

Martyn said...

@ChrisL...

I kept it mega quiet, what with the hatch being released today, thought everyone's minds would be lost elsewhere. Won it off of eBay for $177.50 + $35 S&H. Not a bad price tbh and am mega ecstatic!

Gutted for JFuller that they have to sell their prints. Seeing as i've got my WK, albeit for a lot more than JFuller would be selling it for, JFuller, could to reserve your WK that Thorsten kindly asked you to save for me for Spiderman Ben, I think it's one of his desirables and as he hasn't managed to get a single print form the series, I think he deserves it.

DvdBos said...

Misunderstood, sorry.. I thought you were searching for Love Triangle. :D

Daniel Danger reserves the right to pull his print on anyone he thinks is a flipper and I bet many of the other artists can decide to do what they want.

Please check this blog post before emailing/messaging me. Thanks again"

JFuller said...

@Tim keep in mind the prices for posters is one thing wait to you see the starting prices for some of these props. I know a few starting prices (i have my own rep there, since I use them so much). Ive bought props that cost over $5000, and its pretty common for props on PIH to go ver $20,000.

For example Hurleys lotto ticket (which I was originally thinking about getting, it was offered to me last summer), will start at over $1000

Patmc said...

@Zort or other Admin - Did you get the emails I sent you last night, and today (sent to your hotmail account)? Just wanted to make sure you got the attachments...

XXXHardcore said...

@JFuller

Major bummer about having to sell all of your prints. It goes without saying that you are a stand up individual for offering them to the community first for such an amazingly fair price.

My request was hoping for a Ben Linus. I hope the posters come to your doorstep soon!

Dan said...

@Imannie - you're giving alteridiom a run for his/her money. Please stop. Everyone and their mother knows you're offering The Love Triangle and (surprise!) nobody wants it. I promise. No matter how many times you post the offer. Please stop.

Tim said...

@JFuller, wow that's really great info. I kind of figured things would go high, I just wasn't sure what "High" would actually mean. I'm really familiar with the auction community as a whole, as a I sell rare Documents, but not specifically prop auctions. And I've been drooling over the potential of this for a while. So if you were to make an educated guess on something like Daniel Faraday's journal, what would you think?

ChrisL said...

Flipping does suck when you don't get what you want. But, it is a business and like all businesses, it is for money making only. If making money is considered bad kharma, we might as well all quit our jobs because every business someone owns or works for doesn't do everything that is right and selfless. Rest assured that even flippers get angry because other flippers buy what they wanted. Kind of ironic when you think about it.

I wish we all could get a print but lets face it...there are 250 prints for sale and countless thousands going for them. Not everyone is going to get one. Even if only fans got these 250 of each print, then the thousands of other fans that didn't get one would still be angry or sad. It just sucks. I wish there were tons of more prints and flipping wouldn't be warranted due to low profit margines. But, this ARG has been about creating a buzz for the final season and I would say that they have accomplished that. We should be lucky that we even got a chance to buy 1 of 250 for $50 because ABC paid a lot of the costs to lower the price for us fans.

borloff1313 said...

"We should be lucky that we even got a chance to buy 1 of 250 for $50 because ABC paid a lot of the costs to lower the price for us fans."
The truth of the matter is that in a run of, say 300 prints, most screenprints, even 4 color, specialty inks, etc. don't cost more than $7-10 each including packaging/shipping, screen setup fees, and other related costs. So $50 per print already includes a fair amount of markup. Screenprinting is generally considered one of the cheapest types of printing for runs of this size. Considering most of the artists involved here were already fans of the show, ABC probably didn't need to throw tremendous amounts of cash to the artists to get them to commit to creating a piece for the series...

Anybody want to sell their Hatch or trade theirs for my Rousseau's Transmission or Walt's Kidnapping? Please click on my profile to find my email.

and me as well ? I'd like a XL too but will take what ever size I can get really. Thanks !!

Eugene said...

I guess no one is going to get us t-shirts. Heavy sigh. Knowing that there are some left should make people stay off ebay. Why would you pay $100 now?

The Kharma Initiative said...

Sorry to hear that ioioos. Feels even worse when you read they there were not many oversells. We lucky few!

chaseter said...

borloff, ABC subsidized a lot of this project. That means that they paid these 16 wonderful artists to make these prints for us. Sorry but if you think these prints costed $7-10 each, including shipping, you are a bit off your rocker.

Isn't there a comic book store next door to the Gallery? Maybe someone from there would run over and grab some t-shirts.

MurghBatwar said...

haven't had THE email yet so all is well with the world!

I have a Locke's Secret t-shirt in XL but i'm sort of holding on to it in the distant hope that it will one day be the sweetener in a deal for the Olly print (chances: slim and none - i know)

I wil probably offer it up here as that pipe dream will not come true. Also if anyone wants to swap for a medium or large let me know

Eugene said...

I'm calling the gallery right now.

chaseter said...

Also, considering how much these prints go for on the open market, $50 is a damn good deal...so is $200 that the artists are selling their few for.

Crap. I forgot it's Monday. They're not open.

ioioos, what time did you get that email? I'm one second ahead of you in paypal check out, so now my heart is racing, even though we're past the hypothetical two hour wait!!

@futureself

Yep, I need to poor myself a glass.

I now know that bagging one and getting refunded is worse than not bagging one at all.

I was already planning to rearrange my wall to suit The Hatch!

Man, sending vaguely threatening letters to galleries is never fun . . . hope everyone appreciates that Jensen is a real class act from what I can tell :P

My brother is going to be in LA on Thursday, but I don't think he can work it into his schedule to run to G88; too busy with NAM. I will ask him though, maybe he's doing a gig nearby or something.

Those interested in the Locke tee: I have S and M, I'm probably keeping the S though I suppose if someone was really in love with it . . . anyway I will take some measurements and post later, have some work to do. Not sure how to sell it if more than one person is interested - will ponder that.

Has anyone a photo of the grey LU class of 2010 t-shirt at all?

thorsten said...

Oh I am sure you do, Zukunft!
;))

Martyn said...

Actually, never mind, not shipping the t-shirts internationally anymore. That royally sucks.

borloff1313 said...

I'm only saying that $50 is not 'below retail' for posters like this. There was probably no subsidy involved here, except for promotional costs. Even those can be low with these types of ARGs as the folks following the fun will advertise for you....these posters probably cost AT MOST $15 dollars to produce each. This is after checking out the site for D & L Screenprinting, right here in Seattle. These are the guys who produce the posters for Tyler Stout, Todd Slater, etc. The pricing for poster production is right there on the website-and someone who prints lots of work with a company is going to be able to negotiate a lower rate for a poster job. Just saying.

futureself said...

Lol TW...indeed ;)

Unknown said...

@Martyn - Will add names to "hat" then, excellent idea. I have the gray LU shirt. Have also seen the white & like the gray better - apparently the image holds up better on the gray? White was already cracking after one wash. if want a gray LU shirt and you just need someone to order and mail it, not a problem. Do a lot of shipping anyway lol.

futureself: but look how many good lines are left ;)

Now I really am going to go sew >_>

You're totally right Anne...should probably stop flogging this dead parrot quoting but what the hell...

E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

Anne...do you think that's sewn it up?

Anonymous said...

@ Borloff

Correct. $40 is about the average selling cost for a 300 run by these artists. Simply check out the new poster costs on most of the their websites. So it could be argued that ABC overcharged ; )

The artists got a commissioning fee, had to go through a design approval process and then got 50 each as part of the deal.

There was no discounting going on, and the artists are now reaping the rewards of the limited availability (which I sure none of us have a problem with) by raising the prices on the last few. Its common market practice with limited runs.

I'm sure none of the artist got into the trade to become rich, so its nice for them to get a kick back on the success.

The best bit for the artist is going to be the exposure this has given them, and the fact that they got to work of a project that sounded fun.

borloff1313 said...

@ioioos--I agree. Most of these artists were fans already(I mean, who isn't?) and I am sure they JUMPED at the chance to be part of the project. But I think ABC charging $50 each was awesome-a bargain if I ever saw one!

MurghBatwar said...

Could you enter me in the hat for the medium t-shirt? As i have an XL, if i win, i'll put my XL up for another give-away.

@ImAnnie - nobody had to tell me that there's no interest in your Love Triangle. It's clearly evident by the fact that you've *reminded* us about 20 times in the past 48 hours that you're selling it. Look, it's disrespectful to Zort to keep hawking your posters every few hours on here when he's repeatedly stated that he would rather this not become a "marketplace" of sorts. And to everyone else, it's annoying. 'Nuff said - the rest is really up to you.

THINKING OF SELLING MY EXCLUSIVE EXPOSE SUPRAS FROM GALLERY 1988! WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? ARE THEY WORTH MONEY?

chaseter said...

I agree with iooios in that each print is around $40-$50. These aren't $10-$15 a pop. The artists would never make any money if they only charged $10 for a run of 300. I bet you that ABC paid each of these artists by commissioning them to do these prints. They then got to keep 50 prints to do with what they will. I am sure they all jumped at the chance to improve their portfolio, do it because they are fans of the show, and because they were going to make a little scratch for all their work.

-charter

i'm LOST said...

@charter-these posters are SELLING for 40-50 bucks each. What I am talking about is the COST to the artist of actually MAKING them. Not sure if you are familiar with the process of making screen prints, but a competent studio can produce a print for pennies worth of ink plus the sheet of paper. Really, once the film is created and the screen is burned, making a run of prints takes barely any time to do. I think what iooios is referring to with the $40-50 is the RETAIL price that an artist charges for their work which includes a profit for the artist. They certainly don't get rich selling this stuff, but they do make a bit of money on these prints. Ii don't think they were paid for this LOST job either. I could be wrong, but this seems like a 'prestige' job-something more for exposure than profit...I make and sell my own artwork. I also have worked in the printing industry for the last 15 years-I actually quote these types of jobs to artists all the time. So believe me, I know what I am talking about here...my artwork
