Poster 9 Revealed - Rousseau's Transmission 396

The 9th poster is revealed -

Je suis seul sur cette ile ..ils sont tous morts - I am alone on this island ...they are all dead

It is a slightly different size to the previous posters 18" x 30" and it is by an artist called Dan McCarthy and is entitled Rousseau's Transmission.

Dan McCarthy's website is danmccarthy.org/

The URL is youmightwanttoconsiderhikingboots.com

The URL comes from Saeson 5 Episode 6 - 316 (thanks Walkindude125)

Yeah official decision is I like it. Second purchase for me (as soon as it's available to do so). Have the Crash, would've loved to own Locke's and was to hesitant on the Hatch. (Which is why I'm not waiting on this one.

TomRex said...

I'm wondering if I need to buy one for my poster buddy too. . .

muschology said...

Man I want the Crash. I'll grab this as I've been looking for a McCarthy print. If Daniel Danger makes one of these, my life will be complete... LOST poster-wise :)

Eugene said...

Zort, How do you do it? I'm going crazy with the F5 and you put up new posts! You are the man!

Does anyone think this poster will be like Dan's other posters that contain a hidden design when you turn the lights off?

Phew. Now I can go back to work. As my boss has been over my head for the last hour and a half. These last couple of posters are going very very fast. Are the posters better or have they just become more well known? (Because it really does feel like a race now. You have seconds to decide if you like it, during the 'on sale soon' and then you either buy now or you probably won't get the chance).

I think more and more people have become aware of the posters because if you step back and look at this one it is definitely in the middle of the pack as far as quality goes. There is no color, no detail and no distinguishable LOST characteristics (other than some rolling hills of the island) and it sold out faster than any other print. I think from here on out if you are not at a computer when the link is revealed you will be SOL no matter the quality of the poster.

MJCarp said...

But maybe they just shut it down because of all the traffic

it might open up again

knightsintodreams said...

personally, i liked this one so much BECAUSE it's not distinctly LOST. it's kinda like an easter egg.
i wouldn't want "the crash" or smoke monster, too noticeable. perhaps everyone likes this because they can hang it up and not get asked questions all the time :D

Zort70 said...

I couldn't purchase as the month drop down for the card expiration info didn't have 04 on it.

Scott said...

So there's a 1595 and a 1414 apparently. That's about 181 of these in less than 5 minutes assuming no one went for any of the other posters during. It would be interesting to see how many total were sold if we see any higher/lower numbers.

RobPerrin said...

Amazingly fast! Partly the print, partly the artist I suspect. Order #1430

LostinLondon said...

actually anon i have to respectfully disagree with you there. i think this is a really emotional print of a key moment from the show and the subtlety is part of the beauty. i am sure that obviously more people know about it, but i think this is a great poster!

Unknown said...

Yeah, I have trouble seeing how we went from selling out in about an hour to 7 minutes. It's either a huge Dan McCarthy following, or maybe just more widespread now.

MJCarp said...

WHAT! Zort70,

I went back to purchase a second one on the off chance . . . boom SOLD OUT

*sad*

13 said...

I agree about it having barely any colour, but I think it's subdued and very effective that way. Also, some of the characters are distinguishable.

Capcom said...

I would have snatched this one up of it were green. I'm not crazy about beige. But I think that this poster really captures a monumental point in the early stages of the show, and the graphic is perfectly minimal, and very iconic for fans.

I'm thinking that possibly the mad rush to be the first to get the extras are contributing to the quick sellout. It's kind of too bad that TPTB are promoting the first buyer, it might have been better to do a random selection. JMHO.

John-Paul said...

For the people who say the quality is "not the best", its not the image or quality that made this sell out, its the artist. McCarthy is huge in the art print community. People LOVE his stuff.

jimbo said...

dan has atleast 200 people who buy a subscription to his work. 13 prints a year for like 350 dollars.

Justin said...

sucks, i was in the middle of a transaction and it sold out...

RobPerrin said...

This one really 'felt' like Lost to me. 2nd favourite so far, between #1 Crash & #3 Smokey.

Capcom said...

Oh no Zort!!!!! :-o

Unknown said...

On the previous comments, AndySchex has #1411. So if the highest is around #1600, there's about 200 left between The Numbers and The Love Triangle.

Anonymous said...

dan mccarthy regularly sells out a 500+ print run

Sandman90 said...

Dan McCarthy has a big following of his own and I think this reveal was anticipated by his fans (not sure how they know but I've seen rumors of it in the blogosphere). Moreover, interest in this is growing. I wouldn't say everyone will be a sellout - some older prints are still available and it seems to me they would be gone already if that were the case. But today definitely sets a new standard for punctuality!

Capcom said...

You're right John-Paul and Jimbo, people do love him, that's probably why it went so fast this time.

Zort70 said...

The latest print on the Dan McCarthy web site doesn't look too dissimilar to this !

I've emailed Tyson to see what they can do.

AndySchex said...

Lottery, did you get one?

Unknown said...

@jimbo - I'm one of those people with a subscription. It's totally worth it.

Capcom said...

Good Zort! How unfair.

Martyn said...

Just too simple for me. Bought Dharma Van because it was subtle lost but this is way too subtle lost. Not even lost fans would get it.

To sell out that quickly as well is amazing, quicker than The Crash. I'm guessing there are a lot of Dan McCarthy fanboys out there, rather than losties.

Tess315 said...

Ok I just now F5ed the print since it first went up and it says sold out! Is that right?

Anonymous said...

I understand/appreciate the subtlety and I like that it's narrower and taller than the others to encompass the size of the island and how small the Oceanic survivors felt at that moment. I just would have liked more color or at least more contrast between the different hills and perhaps more detail than a couple tree lines. Maybe I was just expecting more from the McCarthy print.

Sandman90 said...

@Zort - Sorry, friend. That's not right. I hope something works out - perhaps those who bought "extra" might loosen their grips a bit.

13 said...

Agree about having more detail and contrast. Still, I'm a fan of the show but not even that much of a fan of McCarthy, and I think this is one of the best prints in this series.

I think it also depends on if you're a McCarthy fan or even a fan of some of the characters represented in the posters. I personally like Rousseau a lot.

Zort70 said...

Sayid'sgirl, yes it looks like it sold out in about 7 mins

feel_the_insanity said...

Honestly, and pardon my French (lol), it's pretty bad. Does it really capture the imagination of LOST fans? I don't think so. Sure it's "cool" but we want something with deeper meaning. This sorta looks like something McCarthy did to satisfy his fans and the fans of LOST, rather than just the latter.

Also, on the fast sell out...that's pathetic. We had better not see this on EBAY for $500 any time soon. These prints are priced so low (or high, if you're a regular LOST fan) so we have a chance to buy them and admire them. They're meant for us...not for art collectors.

Anonymous said...

@ feel_the_insanity

I think you are 100% correct. I am guessing the vast majority of buyers of this print are either McCarthy fans that would be VERY interested in a 300 (200 to the public) print run of his, or collectors looking to make a buck.

Martyn said...

Well said FTI!

Makes me wonder and hope deeply, that they got Rob Jones to do one. That'd be awesome on a huge scale but no doubt his under lock and key in Jack White's basement working on his next tour poster :(

kiwilostie said...

Do we know if people were buying via the back door? Might be a factor in it selling so fast.

MJCarp said...

I am not convinced that all are SOLD. We've seen this before from GoMerch. They can't handle 200 hits in 7 minutes! I'd keep checking back.

But clearly, another element is in the game.

I think Chat topped 67? Can we grab stats on that IC?

feel_the_insanity said...

Dharma Van gone, great print. It just never "spoke" to me, had to pass but it is beautiful. This McCarthy print really bugs me! Haha, he has a subscription to his art! How can you buy a piece of art before even looking at it! Ugh!

Eugene said...

Zort,
I hope they can find a spare out of the first 100 they can give you. Maybe Frame 16 will be the opportunity to buy one of the first 15 that you may have missed. That thought ocurred to me over the weekend.

Martyn said...

Just looked through of some of his other prints and, although they aren't very spectacular, they do have a lot of detail in them. I think this one could of done with a bit more. I'd personally rather buy the four toed statue.

Zort70 said...

Just got a reply -

Unfortunately we are totally sold out of the print and have not encountered that problem in the past. This is the first we have heard of it. Sorry to hear about the date issue you were having at the time. Wish we were able to still get you the print, but we have sold every copy were given, and because so many people were ordering at the same exact time, we actually oversold the print by 15, and have to cancel all those orders. Sorry again and we will pass along this email to our Internet team.

Unknown said...

Someone in another comment said they got word their poster order for The Hatch shipped on the 6th... where do you find out the status of your order?

Zort70 said...

Hope you aren't in the 15 :-(

Martyn said...

Ouch, 15? They are not going to be happy people.

John-Paul said...

Zort, which poster was oversold?

TomRex said...

200 prints REALLY isn't that much. You have to remember that this is Lost fans AND artist fans. With so many people in the chat - it's really not that surprising that this sold out so quickly. I think for every person we have posting here there are another couple who just watch and don't post.

As far as being able to actually take the orders in 7 minutes. Why not? That's about 30 a minute and one every other second. Any decent checkout system should be able to handle this.

"Back door" ordering and people trying to get first probably has no effect on how quickly something sells out.

DougyFresh said...

@Anonymous If you were expecting more from Dan McCarthy than you haven't been following his prints closely. His 10,000 drums and he left yesterday behind him hold true to the aesthetic presented in the print. also, we see a little splash of his newer styles seen in his sonic youth poster and sketching: animal kingdom with the inset bubbles.
@feel_t_i These are only worth what people are willing to pay. It's capitalism. If Losties wanted one of these prints they could portion out their time accordingly.

P.S. This print is awesome and will look great with my smoke monster and the crash.

comixguru said...

I kept looking at this print- refreshing the page and zooming in on the detail- and although it is great in design- and clever, I decided not to buy it because it just didn't speak to me. As I'm a frequent seller on eBay- it was tempting to buy to resell- but I don't want to do that to the fans out there that really really love this print and deserve a chance to get it at this reasonable price. I am really happy with the ones i've gotten so far (LOCKE, the CRASH, and the HATCH) and am hoping that others down the line will also speak to me. It's so difficult sometimes to weigh the buy or not buy pros and cons. Just my 2 cents. Sigh.

(n) said...

I decided against getting this one, I like Dan McCarthy but it wouldn't fit in my apartment.

Nice to see the Dharma Van sold, I liked it and thought it was great but just couldn't bring myself to drop the $50 on it but it was a wonderful piece of art nonetheless.

Congrats to everyone who got this print, if I know anything about Dan you will be very very pleased!

knightsintodreams said...

AndySchex said...

I think we crashed Go Merchs site. I just clicked on the Buy Now for Hurley and the Dharma Van and I get a broken link error.

Anonymous said...

Yah, that over sold situation happened to me last time with "The Hatch". Stings pretty hard once you realize.

Glad I got one this time.

Zort70 said...

John-Paul - it was the newest poster

feel_the_insanity said...

Maybe they shouldn't have set it at 200 prints...why set it to 200 if you know you can sell 400? 400? 500? And don't say because they are "limited" they'd still be worth something if there were 400 of them. 200 sold out of 200 is the same profit as 200 sold out of 400. Sigh, just annoyed at the now obvious fact that art collectors may know of the site.

(n) said...

Wow, how unfortunate! I would have been crushed if they had canceled my Hatch order. By far my favorite print (hope it gets here today!)

AndySchex said...

opps - I meant Love triangle instead of Dharma van in my previous post.

13 said...

"feel_the_insanity said...Haha, he has a subscription to his art! How can you buy a piece of art before even looking at it! Ugh!"

I'm not a huge fan of subscriptions, but I completely understand them. Some artists consistently put out great work (at least in their fans' eyes). So why not have a way for the fans to not worry about releases? It re-assures them they will get most of the prints, and some variants. Some people also like surprises.

I think the limited nature of these kinds of prints has more to do with the fact that they are handmade.

300 or 200 are quite large edition sizes for these. I'm used to seeing much less.

Martyn said...

@lottery ticket...

Just noticed that too, think it's brilliant that there's this rapper out there that is obviously a geek of Lost just like us. Very surreal, now trying to decide on the album cover for it, him saluting in the final clue or the actual print.

I'm getting the feeling this poster is a very "marmite" poster for people, along with the anger that art fans have bought it even though they don't like/get Lost. I'd be annoyed if this was the hatch to be honest.

I'm sure there will be bigger and better ones over the next few weeks, which I hope not because it's getting hard to resist posters, I was relieved that I didn't "get" this poster or its message. My credit card thanks me.

Andy said...

Well, this one got zapped..7 minutes?..I was on it the instant it went " Buy Now"..and I still ended up at #1504...something ain't right here..I smell back door...shame.

The print itself...minimalist(?)..simple..I suspect the artist has actually been to Hawaii or southpacific volcanoe islands. What is interesting is the direction..up from the dark losties
thru the hills and tower and out into the blinding brite white. there is just a right amount color to suggest the " humid" conditions as well. yea..there is a sense of liberation here. Danielles message, all are dead..and the escape,,liberation of the white. I really haven't taken a close look,,Will do that when it arrives at door step..MEL

Joe D said...

What was your order number Andy? I have order #1595 and have not received a refund email...yet

MiddayShadows said...

I love this print immediately and grabbed it the instant it went onsale. I also went back and bought one for my sister....and .....was one of the Oceanic 15 who was refunded their poster as 'oversold.'Disappointing, but
I feel lucky to have gotten one.

This print is far superior to the (in my opinion, amateurish) the Hatch, which feels like art student work. Alongside Lockes secret, today's Mccarthy is my favourite of the bunch.

To those unfamiliar with Mccarthy's work, his art has a simplicity to it it , yes, but compels you to keep looking further at it, absorbing the story of the image he depicts.

I love the use of space here. The characters feel truly 'Lost.' And as is the way the island is depicted on the show, it is both beautiful and foreboding. I **love** how the communications tower is seen in the background, so far away.

Unknown said...

Anon, I was 1464 and definitely did not backdoor...I had my order in within 60 seconds, for sure...

For the record, no Dan McCarthy fans were told about this poster release happening, or trust me I would've been able to get one. From my understanding, and we can only get a real answer if Dan chimes in himself somewhere publicly, he did not even know his poster was the one being sold today. But that's what I was told in an email.

(n) said...

I really hope this wont continue to be a problem...though I have a sneaking suspicion it will be...

the scramble for the 16th frame is going to be insane!

NagChampa said...

to the person who said "They're meant for us...not for art collectors" .. are you for real? so you wouldn't have cared if these were done by art school hacks instead of established artists?

these artists have fans, just like the show does. they buy each print, often unseen in a subscription manner, because they love the work that much. they follow and collect, both in anticipation and enjoyment.. much like a fan of the show would watch an episode, not knowing the plot, but excited by the storyline or the previous episode.

yes it sucks if you have been following/collecting this lost set and miss out, but it sucks as much for the art/artist lover who is also competing for a limited run of posters against people who arent even fans of the artists, but rather of the show or subject matter.

poster geeks and tv show geeks, both.. show some compassion and understanding for your brother (and sister) geeks.

feel_the_insanity said...

I guess you misunderstood me Champa, I didn't intend to incite a riot or an angry post on your part.

Let me clear, the print is beautiful. Very detailed, very cool to look at it. But what does it mean to a LOST fan? Does it represent something more than just what is on the paper? I, for one, don't think so. It just doesn't speak to me. Great detail though, McCarthy is obviously very talented.

P.S. And, they are made for LOST fans. This is a LOST website, hosted by ABC and these prints are specifically printed for LOST fans. Obviously, anyone can buy them. There's no arguing that.

feel_the_insanity said...

P.S.S. Zort, I'm very sorry to hear that you couldn't get one. Don't worry though, 7 more to go. You'll get one you like :)

Eugene said...

I have to say, with how fast this one sold, that if the rest of the events are in the real world I would think twice about going in case I missed a poster.

maven said...

The only thing that would really piss me off is if these are being snapped up "professionally" by non-Lost and/or non-artist fans...just for potential profit down the line. I'm just saying....7 minutes was awfully fast!

jimbo said...

artistically this poster is spot on to me. it's early in the shows run, at that point the island itself seemed daunting, large, and unknown. that is what this print tells me. the text only adds to the season one wonder and suspense. it's a very good print and i dont see any lost fan not getting it.

Zort70 said...

compared to McCarthy's other stuff, this one is rather mundane. I wish he would have included more noticeable elements of the island. Or at least a little bit more color.

Zort70 said...

That should read - I'm not totally devastated....

DougyFresh said...

would be cool if all the extras were collaged in some fashion to create the 16th print as an amalgamation of the previous 15. maybe they'd fit together in some specific fashion or just as an artistic interpretation of the whole process in and of itself.

Ginger said...

I really don't like this one. Having said that, when I was first directed to Dan McCarthy's site I was like, "Whatever this guy does I'm buying it!" I even thought about joining his print club. I'm not an art collector or a collector of anything else. That's how much I like his stuff. This just didn't grab me. I think maybe the combination of liking his other stuff and liking LOST so much I was really expecting something more. Kind of a let down, but at least I wasn't someone that did want it & then got a refund e-mail.

NC..The real point is..how many McCarthy fans are going to go back and watch 5 seasons of LOST ..to get a better appreciation of the Print..I think not..Sorry, but your excuse making comes off as shallow and a diservice to DM and the art involved...btw..its never cool to tell other people on a blog . chatroom,,etc, etc,,what to do and how to behave..There is no way you can enforce it..sooooo,,you give more of your self away, than you realize...MEL

@Zort & everyone else who didn't get one that's a bummer. I hope the artists do make the other 100 prints available at some point. That would be really nice. Or maybe somebody's poster buddy bought one & then they don't want it. That would be nice too.

@Jimbo, great description of what the print means to you. I think you're spot on, the island does seem daunting. The print is still really cool...but it's just hard to relate to it as a LOST fan. Sure, the island is there and the characters...I don't know, I'm rambling now. Haha. Would love to hear Mel's take on the piece. Your take on The Hatch is what made me buy it!

#1473 here. It´s been my first one. I really dig it, so far my fav one next to the Locke and Crash ones.

Another great thing about this image is that you can tell who each of the characters are - very subtle but effective sihouttes....

I think this may mark the fourth or fifth time I was order#3. Very happy I got the print, especially considering if it had gone on sale an hour and a half later, I would have missed it standing in line at the post office waiting to mail a pile of certified letters to the IRS (a line I am still standing in now).

You can tell the post office ramped up the staffing Today for tax deadline, as they are now staffing 3 of the 7 available counters (normally only 2 are staffed) uggh

@feel_the_insanity Thanks.

@jimbo Completely agree about the meaning behind the print. This is the first one I've actually felt has captured something that reminds me of the show and being there on the island, with the characters themselves. There have been some decent posters in this series, but none that have made me feel the presence of the island.

@frank Yes, you can definitely make out most of the characters.

DougyFresh said...

correct me if i'm wrong, but it's sawyer, kate, charlie , shannon, boone and sayid from left to right?

Congested said...

Okay, well, now that I've had a chance to catch up I'll weigh in.

First of all I think it's entirely understandable that fans of this artist would snatch this one up. However if they were alerted that it would be selling today, prior to the sale, that would be a bummer. Having said that it seems like that's why this sold so fast and I don't think it's really fair to fans of the artist to be "mad" ... though it is disappointing to read about all those who tried to get this poster but couldn't because it sold out so quickly.

Also the URL (maybe someone else already mentioned this?) is from the episode 316. It is a quote of Kate talking to Jack:

"KATE: Yeah, sure. [Kate sits down and notices the shoes] Those don't make much sense for the Island. You might want to consider hiking boots." (via Lostpedia)

As for the print itself I think it's beautiful. As for it being subtle... it both is and isn't... it's obviously from the Pilot. And you can clearly make out Sawyer, Kate, Charlie, Shannon, Boone and Sayid. (Was hoping Sayid's girl was able to nab it, but after looking through the comments I'm guessing she didn't). So like Locke's Secret and The Statue posters I think there is a non-subtlety to Lost fans, but to people who just see it there is still something one can enjoy looking at.

Hard for me to rate it better than/worse than. On a personal level I feel it meets my "standard" of something I'd like to see on my wall. Having said that I've got three posters already and am holding out at this point for something that I really really like. I could have done without the text bubble. And "Guys, where are we?" probably would have suited the text bubble more and fit with the rest of the image. The "Guys, where are we?" line at the end of the Pilot was more of an iconic moment/question from that episode imo.

But this is all just my thoughts, don't expect anyone to agree with me. Not trying to start an argument. :P

I like the colors, and the shades of the mountains in the distance. Definitely feels like the island. And I think the silhouettes of the trees are awesome as well.

Congested said...

@DF - yes that appears to be the order... unless I've got Charlie/Boone confused... but I don't think I do.

I'm impressed at anyone who can tell any of our characters. I thought they were very poorly drawn.

Amy Lynn said...

Apparently, according to someone at DarkUFO, McCarthy's newsletter gave info about today's reveal.

BuckarooBanzai said...

I remember I had goosebumps when the french transmission started, Congested. It was the promise of mysteries, strangeness, magic and terror for me, in that moment, and the hint that much more was going on under the surface of a story that I mistook for 'Survivor XL' in the beginning ;))

Congested said...

@Amy: That's a bit frustrating.

I didn't have any trouble with the silhouettes. Only a bit with Boone/Charlie. The clothing and poses all match very well imo.

jimbo said...

i haven't got a newsletter from dan mccarthy today. and he hasn't updated on facebook either.

DougyFresh said...

using link as a reference, i think they were drawn fairly well. time will tell as these will certainly show up larger on the physical poster.

Congested said...

Yeah perhaps the French quote is best suited thorsten. He obviously did it as that was the poster topic he was given.

Though when I saw the print on my phone, without reading it, I assumed it was Charlie saying "Guys, where are we?" Don't really know why that sticks out to me more.

MiddayShadows said...

AmyLynn - are you looking at the same print?? the characters are drawn *very* well. I don't know why you are so critical. To communicate so much through subtle body language is the sign of a very good drawing. Look again and you can see left to right: Sawyer, Kate,Jack, Shannon, Charlie and Sayid. He captured the gait/body language of the actors/character right on: the way Kate tilts her hips, the way Shannon subtley hunches her shoulders etc. It's like you didnt even look at it before criticizing it.

MiddayShadows said...

Furthermore, I am on Dan's mailing list and his Facebook club page, and there was NO such 'newsletter.'

Amy Lynn said...

Sorry if you think I'm being critical. I did look at the print many times before I commented. I just don't think it's very good. *shrug*

Well, to each, his or her own. Opinion, that is.

DanFan said...

There was no newsletter. I'm a huge Dan McCarthy fan and would know. Dan did not even know his print was being sold today.

jimbo said...

amy that has nothing to do with the lost print. he releases a bunch of stuff and that wasn't anything to do with this print

Amy Lynn said...

Oh, OK

Amy Lynn said...

Yes, I agree, to each his own. Just because I don't think this print is good doesn't mean it isn't good.

Andy said...

AmyLynn, Dan does a print every month. That was not in regards to the LOST print.

Anonymous said...

'Apparently, according to someone at DarkUFO, McCarthy's newsletter gave info about today's reveal.'

This is not true. I am on his email newsletter list and none was sent out.

Andy said...

sorry AmyLynn, didn't see the extra posts :(

Yes, I concur with the previous clarifications. The "new" and "october" prints he's referring to are the monthly prints for his subscribers, of which I am one. The "bonus " print is the annual extra print you receive from him when you join the club.

@Frank
Jack isn't on the hilltop in the episode, nor is he on the poster. Boone is the sixth.

Well I knew I'd miss the reveal, but didn't know I'd miss the sale that lasted only 10 minutes! wow! I know some of you don't like this one, but I think it's great. I love the subtlety of it and the neutral colors. Would've looked good with my other two, but I'm not too broken up about it. Congrats to those who got one!
