The Polar Bear - Roundup 284

As we sail into the uncharted waters of Frame 16 and how it "Will be found", lets take a moment to revisit last night.

The 44th Ward Twitter site was updated with a pictue of our losties queuing.

It has been said before but it is going to be said again a huge thanks to all that attended and reported back it sounded like a fun evening which lasted long after the reveal.

The reveal as we found out last night was on a napkin with the face of Pierre Chang / Edgar Halliwax / Marvin Candle on it. The hub page was updated with a picture of the napkin shortly after the reveal and poster sell out.

This fantastic picture by Anne is of LotteryTicket and ObFuSc8 at the reveal having a great time surfing for more clues.

You can see more pictures from Anne using this link

One person at the reveal, Valentin_108, managed to purchase a poster on their iPhone, which given the frantic nature of doing so is no mean feat.

One last mention has to go to LotteryTicket who was sending back pictures of the food at 44th Ward which was making everyone not at the reveal very hungry.

I remember that the viral campaign for The Dark Knight led the fans to locations to get Joker masks and cakes, etc. It would be cool if they hid the last batch of posters in various locations around the country (world!) that would be free for the finding. A logistical nightmare, but a memorable way to end the whole thing.

Zort70 said...

Yes that would be good, but I don't fancy a trip across the country or even continent to try and get one.

thorsten said...

I would cover the old continent, Zort!
;))

Zort70 said...

Should we start a list of which people can cover which countries :-)

thorsten said...

I will start in Spain

Martyn said...

I love that video. Went hiking in august and saw a load of sheep and instantly wanted to attach lights to them.

ChrisL said...

Morning all. thorsten, that is an epic promo!

I posted a question in the clues section, but the comment is not showing up. I thought I'd ask here as well for some feedback. The fourth letter is missing an "IN" or "AT" near the end of the letter.
"...That's what all the cool undergrads wear ___their new digs."
Which word is more likely to have been omitted? I have heard "in" more often in reference to digs. But the English language is regularly slaughtered in my area of the country, so I thought I should ask for other opinions.

Asked this earlier... not sure if it has been addressed

Do you guys thing those added numbers have any meaning?

ChrisL said...

andalone, I assumed that the missing word was "in".

My Walt's Kidnapping finally turned up today... Wow that print looks great up close.

andalone said...

@masheen - I thought maybe location, but not enough digits to indicate latitude/longitude.

Tess315 said...

thorsten
That's an amazing promo. Thanks for posting it.

andalone
I would also say "in".

Zort70 said...

andalone - I'm in the "in" camp as well.

Masheen, I think they are just random numbers designed to try and stop us guessing the full URL path before it is released.

andalone said...

The consensus seems to be "in"...adding it to my scrabble pieces.

ReverendMilo said...

So today is cybermonday. Anyone know of good deals on a ps3 so I can watch the season 5 blue rays?

andalone said...

@ReverendMilo Sears has the Slim PS3 120GB for $299.99

Morning All - Quick post about email I sent to Jay last night regarding what's on the bottom of the Polar Bear poster + if he'd like to share any insight on his interpretation of this "water cooler moment". He just responded... very cool of him to do so. I've sent an email thanking him and inviting him to LOST ARG's when he can speak more freely:

hi john -

thanks for writing. i think i recall that i put my name down there in the corner.

i can't answer any other questions until after the last reveal.

ahoy!

- jay

Tess315 said...

Hmm interesting. He can't say anything until after the last reveal. Most of them say until after the new year.

JPL thanks for sharing.

Amy Lynn said...

Yeah, but then again, Jay Ryan was one of the first artists to spill that he had a reveal coming up.

thorsten said...

Thats cool, JPL!

ChrisL said...

That's interesting JPL. Well done with the email. I'm not sure I get what he means by "i can't answer any other questions until after the last reveal"... is that a hint that the letters and other clues DO have something to tell us about 16?

Brendan said...

" is that a hint that the letters and other clues DO have something to tell us about 16?

Definetly interesting... gotta take a closer look at the print!

Zort70 said...

Thanks JPL, good to know.

The artists have been under tight scrutiny regarding any information. For exaple Daniel Danger asked me to take a comment he had made down from the main blog page a while back. He said that he had had some trouple from Tyson over it as it revealed too much info about selling posters after the event.

Zort70 said...

By the way trouple is far worse than trouble :-)

Capcom said...

Hey friends!

Wow, that is an amazing promo. Now that's what I call a Lost-inspired piece of art. Takes all the elements of Lost and puts them into a specific artistic concept all its own. Bravo! Thanks for sharing it Thorsten. :-)

Great going JPL. And good work on the letters Andalone, and others.

I can't believe how worked up I'm beginning to get in anticipation of what the "Red ?" is all about. Or maybe I just made my morning coffee too strong. Anyway, I sure hope that it's more inclusive for everyone if something is for sale, since it's the final chance and all. I don't want people to have to walk away empty handed for the last one if they don't want to.

Looking forward to our work together on the last clue! :-D

Capcom said...

Oh, that's interesting Zort! Let's keep what he said in mind, I guess.

maven said...

Good morning! Thanks for linking that Spanish promo, Thorsten. The chessboard is a great representation of the mythology of LOST! The question is: Who is moving the pieces?

Interesting that Jay didn't come right out and say "that's my name in the corner". "I think I recall" is a strange way of putting it...one would think an artist would remember whether he put his name in his work or not!

Here's hoping we have something completely different with the Red?.

Amy Lynn said...

Can anyone explain to me the concept of having subscribers, and how prevalent it is in the art world? It seems like Daniel Danger has a bazillion subscribers, but apparently Jay Ryan has under 50, since they are all getting a copy of The Polar Bear?

Zort70 said...

Amy, has someone said all his subscribers are getting one ?

As far as I can tell all Jay has said is that he isn't selling any, the subscriber thing may just be an assumption, I'm not sure.

Amy Lynn said...

Some of his subscribers on EB said they were told this.

Brendan said...

Daniel Danger has 0 subscribers.

Capcom said...

Amy I don't think that subscribing per se to contemporary artists is unusual. I've known people who were on the list for all the new Bev Dolittle works, about 15 years ago, and I'm sure that those small galleries that sell new art like Wysocky(sp?), Kinkade, Allan Bean, and the other contemporary fine artist have lists that you can get on for their new works as well. But direct-to-artsist subscription is probably a product of the net, of course, whereas before it went through a gallery like an agent for the artist.

Brendan said...

By the way, can someone hook me up with a google wave invite?

lostfan3636 at gmail

Thanks!

Unknown said...

i can explain subscribers.

it is easy. some artists sell subscriptions of there work. you pay a set fee and you get one of everything they make in a year. i'm not sure if DD does a subscription any longer.

i can tell you that jay ryan's subscription deal is this. for said fee you get one of everything that he prints in his Bird Machine studio. if it is his art work and printed at the Bird Machine the subscribers get it. I've been told that he has 50 subscribers. I'm also under the assumption that normally Jay keeps number 1 to 60 of any poster run to cover the 50 sub holders and 10 for his personal archive. This LOST print means that Jay will be giving his 50 prints to the sub holders and will NOT have a copy in his archives.

Not every artist offer subscriptions and many that do handle the specifics differently.

I hope that clears some stuff up. Feel free to ask me other questions.

melbrs said...

@Brendan - invite on it's way.

Thanks melbrs!

I went to the 44th ward diner party. It was really crowded... but it was an awesome turnout. I have some extra napkins with from the release... I didn't know if anyone would be willing to trade for some of them. E-mail me at Caleb_stead@yahoo.com if you have any interest. I have tons of pictures.

ReverendMilo said...

OK bullet bit...

after shopping around I went for the Walmart cybermonday ps3 bundle.

after shipping it was essentially the same price as what I could build out on amazon but with an extra controller.

it was either that or the lg 390 blue ray player. I figured I'd drop the extra 90 bucks to the ps3 and play an occasional game.

Amy Lynn said...

Just bit the bullet on my end and bought the LOST S5 Blu Ray set with 12/8 guarantee.

sent you an e-mail request for a napkin.

Turns out my dad went to 44th Diner in 99 for a conference and said that the food there was amazing and was confused as to why they went there to begin with.

Adding 44th to my list of to do's when I attempt Route 66 in 2011.

So are we all staying here rather than shifting to the NEW POST?

Anyone else thinking for frame 16 we might get some kind of orientation film from Dr. Halliwax? :)

Unknown said...

Didn't get a chance to post til now, finally managed to get my H1N1 vac yesterday and it hit a bit hard (am high risk).

I added pics of the napkin to the Flickr set. My first foray into napkin photography (well I should hope so), not sure how I did so if you need better lighting for some use lmk and I'll try again.
http://bit.ly/4Ce385

Go ahead and ignore the CC on my pics, I haven't changed my licenses, don't mind if people use them.

Was pondering clues for Frame 16 but haven't got far. Did considering using some words (instead of letters) that had omissions/etc and came up with a phrase: "wishes of Dharma and the virtual polar (bear) band" XD Pretty sure it's a "man in the moon" effect, and not useful at all. Amused me tho. Personally I don't think it'll be based on the first-purchaser letters; wrong type of hiding place. But no avenue should go unexplored!

Unknown said...

I have a question about framing these prints. I got my Swan Station print, thanks to Frank and his contest, and I was wondering if there's a cheap but safe way to frame these prints without spending more than I paid for each print? Especially since I have the polar bear coming too, I don't feel like spending $100 for the prints + $200 to frame them. Any solutions?

Also if anyone has framed the Swan Station, what color mat and frame did you choose?

Sam G said...

Several people got frames at Michael's, until they can get them professionally framed.

Brendan said...

I'd go black mat on the swan.

ObFuSc8 said...

The pic of the Frame 4 1st purchaser letter is cut off on the right. So all we see is the "wh" what's either where or what, but that make a difference.

That's where all the cool undergrads wear their new digs.

OR

That's what all the cool undergrads wear wear their new digs.

Hey,
For anyone that's interested, I got this poster as well as Ben Linus. I absolutely love both of them, but I was hoping to give them to friends, and the two favorites from my friends view are The Hatch and The Smokemonster. If anyone who was absolutely in love with this or the Ben Linus has either of those two mentioned above, I would love to trade! Just comment me if you're interested and hopefully we can contact each other and work something out... thanks!
