The Barracks - Round Up 220

Well, it was the usual mix of chaos and disappointment for some last night. The post mortems into the purchasing system have been going on all night, and have repeated the majority of what has already been said in previous releases. Please remember that this site does not run the events or sell the posters, any upset because of the purchasing system should not be directed at us.

Also regrettably because of the rude and sometimes obnoxious behaviour of some of the anonymous posters the blog administrators have taken the decision to stop anonymous and non registered users from posting in the blog comments. This will not affect the true fans of Lost and the people that already in the majority behave in a very kind, polite and respectful manner, all principles on which this blog was founded)

Anyway back to the plot (or unplot as "There is no alternate reality, just reality")

I missed a lot of the excitement from the reveal, however from reading the comments it looks like the reveal took place as expected at the SPiN NY club firstly through a video and then on the printed table tennis ball. Amy Lynn was there and very kindly sent this video of the video.

***Be warned that the video and the pictures below may in fact contain spoilers for season 6. They are posted here because there is no reason to suspect that they are anything other than easter eggs that will mean something when we see season 6***

Apart from the URL reveal a few screenshots at the end of the video seem to be very interesting (thanks to MrTibbs for sending them in):

Next a group picture of the people that went down to SPiN

And finally a comment from Nate Duval posted last night.

good morning/afternoon/evening :)

I am getting curious about the video and meaning behind it.

As most people already know, G1988 said:
"fans with eagle eyes, may have learned a thing or two about upcoming developments on their favorite TV program."

The HUB says, "Watch the video closely, Ping Pong Players!"

I for one am really excited about the possibilities! :)

Probably for the best to turn on anonymous posting. Shame it had to come to that though.

cheers!

I accept that there may be something wrong with me but I like this one even more this morning! I really do get that sense of the surreal atmosphere that I felt during that first scene when we say how the Others really lived.

And like the McCarthy, it creates for me a feeling of the power of the island. It may not be considered an iconic "moment" as such but the addition of the just crashed 815 makes much more so to me.

Just hope I can manage to get one! Last night was crazy. Just about to read through all of your posts but did I hear right that Lotto didn't get one?

The video is fascinating...is that supposed to be Miles??

do the contents of the vid contian SPOILERS for Season Six? I'm tryin HARD to stay spoilerfree

Zort70 said...

Masheen, if they are spoilers they are very subtle spoilers that probably won't mean anything until we see the episodes.

Do you think I ought to put a spoiler warning up ?

Just Thinking said...

Hi all-here is the poster formerly known as JT. I'm sorry about the out of hand party last night Zort, understand why you are trying to "run a tight ship"

They must be talking about those brief images at the end. That room that looks like an 1800's salon full of pictures is interesting. And the Asian figure has older clothing on- a la Jacob or Black Rock times.

Zort70 said...

I've added a sort of spoiler warning to the main page, but I honestly don't think that we could class them as true spoilers of any sort.

They are in the LAX category, in that they might mean something, but not enough to be harmful to the enjoyment of the final season.

Just Thinking said...

That must be Vincent? What does he have around his neck?

Lisa-Maladylis said...

@Sanford, yeah bummer I agree. I was here from the start as well. Just been on and off the boards with this all and in the shadows through it all. I love playing the game but some of it drives me nuts. I'm a artist as well and well... some of it would bring me to tears if this was over my art. If people ever saw some of my work and said some of the things they do here about it where I could read it or hear it, I would be in tears. My moma always told me to be polite, don't say something mean about something. My interpretation of what is art might be different than someone elses but it's still art and the painter still put their hard work into it. ack- too early to think, need more coffee !
I love the Lost Arg and you all do a great job here !

StrobeJams said...

Thx Zort, much appreciated.

It's incredibly hard to stay spoiler free ... so this ARG section of LOST is some kind of haven for me... nor more DocArzt, no sllost etc for the time being.

(Just last week I wanted to check for Terry O'Quinn's latest acting gigs over at IMDB ... and BAM... the first three episode titles of S6 rammed right into my face)

StrobeJams said...

ok back on Topic

-Nate's depiction of the barracks is not THAT bad. It's a little off but that can be said of basically all the posters I guess

-the server issues are nerve wrecking, so it's good that we have only three more runs to do

-why has this overselling issue reared its ugly ugly head once again? I thought that was settled once and for all? Zort do you wanna drop Tyson an email to clarify?

-speaking of Tyson: I am a little disappointed about his reply to Lotto... not the nicest way to behave to one of the most dedicted FANS out there

-where's Milo btw?

Thx to anyone who went to Spin..!

good morning everyone...glad to see a new post! I try to avoid all the nastiness as much as I can, so just skimmed the after-reveal comments. I thought this was a very good reveal with the location, swag, video, etc. and the peeps who went are great! Maven, thanks for following for us!
@Zort, you're a hero! I don't think I could moderate something this stressful without a little snarkiness sometimes, you're terrific!
xxoo

ChrisL said...

Agreed - Zort - thanks for doing a great job for everyone here. It is greatly appreciated. I may be a recent poster but I immediately felt at home.

I just went through the last post and kinda wish I hadn't. Dont remember seeing so many admin removed posts before. I dread to think what the content was. Anyway... well held Zort! you must have been shattered after the concert.

Can I just say... I still like The Barracks a lot.

justanothersky said...

Just realized some other people had posted similar opinions on the same subject in the previous post. Anyway…

@ Mungonna / Mel, I agree with your view on this print itself, but only to a certain degree. Indeed there is a "things are not what they seemed" feeling subtly manifesting itself at the beginning of “A Tales of Two cities” which we were first shown the Others-ville.
But as creative process often does, the interconnection between the grey matter & the physical act of making will bring out sometimes much profound emotions which the artists themselves weren’t consciously aware in the first place.

No doubt the contrast between the foreground house & the background mountain ranges were far too harsh to be considered successful; nevertheless, the far more 3-dimensional and almost sparkling emerald green mountains actually has drawn out a more complex and maybe more somber feel out of the house in front.
While there is clear intention to represent the orderly settlement we’ve seen through the clean & simple line works on the house, but unlike a dwelling for Snoopy, personally Duval’s conscious decision not to include a human figure in this print actually made the Barrack resembling more of its later abandoned & dilapidated state which Sun & Frank wondered around after 316 crashed on the island. The hung washing slightly swaying in the wind is further making it almost haunted houses like.
At least at the time when Juliet burnt her cookies before sitting & stared aimlessly in the book club, the whole Barracks was still full of life and maybe even children’s laughter.

As always, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I didn’t buy this print personally as I have no intention to put a collection together, nor was I finding deeply attracted to what I see in this print.
That said, I certainly don’t think it is a failed attempt that weakened the whole series. There are much more deserving candidate for that.
Also wanted to clarify, not that I think Nate Duval needs any defending, just want to point out even though the house might be drawn in a style what French would call “naivete”, #13 is far from being a child’s play and has more than what meets the eye.

Zort70 said...

Although I don't do this for all the compliments, they are none the less very welcome.

I'll try and email Tyson, but they have no obligation to respond to me so I might not get anything useful back.

As a piece of art I don't think it is bad at all, as a piece of Lost art, maybe it could have done with something extra to tie it more to Lost.

Dan, congratulations on the Wedding and have fun ;-)

The artist is Thomas Hannsz, who was also a background cast member.
(see lostpedia)

I bought these a couple of weeks ago to add to the LOST art.....I thought I might hang Jacob's Dog next to last week's print.

Guess I have to step out from the cloak of anonymity! Not my fave print but still kind of like it. Congrats to all who landed it. Thanks for the updates Pandalum. (formerly Anonymous --Kyle)

andalone said...

Hi Kyle!
Note about the Thomas Hannsz prints: they are printed on really heavy weight paper and have the "canvas effect" that is slightly textured. I purchased the smallest sizes of each. Both prints have a very wide white border.

Zort70 said...

I updated the main post with the comment from Nate last night.

Is there some sort of writing along the bottom of the print?

thorsten said...

Zort, you are doing an excellent job with this site, and I am sure all real fans appreciate this. Last night I tried Firefox on the Mac, and it refreshed the reveal page quite nicely. It switched to Buy now with no problem. Then, it just ended, as you see on this screenshot…
http://thorstenwulff.com/20091113002558.jpg
Well, it was fun while it lasted, but there are two things bothering me. I had to pick up three of the four prints I managed to buy at the customs office, which sucks. What sucks even more is that my Kevin Tong seems missing. And while it is big fun to hunt for the clues, it is a frustrating antclimax to end at the purchase page. Hence I will stop hunting, and retire from LostARGs. Have fun everybody. And thanks for your great work, Zort.

tupalev said...

After sleeping on it I do really enjoy this print. Not my favourite but one I would like to have eventually. Congrats to all who were able to get it and thanks to Mr. Duval for his post.

It is a little sad now knowing the chances of actually getting any of the remaining prints are next to 0, but a the same time it sure does not take away my enjoyment of this site and all the great contributors. I'll keep following along!

Now how about a reveal in Canada? :) Toronto would be nice!

Just ordered a reproduction of the Black Rock, it was nice to order a poster without all the stress for a change! Can't afford the original until I win the Lottery, buy an island, and start a Dharma Initiative where fans like us can spend a month, a year, a lifetime or several

I was going to look for that after the ARG was over but thanks for the link andalone!

tupalev said...

Yes, thanks for the link andalone, I bought a copy of the black rock as well.

Amy Lynn said...

Has anyone else seen another copy of the video floating around? I seemed to be the only person recording the whole thing, but maybe there's a better copy with the audio on it? Or do you think we'll get an official one?

thorsten said...

tibbs, Lisa and martyn, you are right.
I started this DCAAPB thing on Pauls site with discussions about diverging timelines and stuff like that, long before it turned into the art thing. And the great experience here is community, and meeting friends. So what the heck, it's not about frantically buying posters and hitting F5… The fun is in the journey. So I will not abandon ship.
Thank you.

Lisa-Maladylis said...

kewl thorsten, glad your sticking around !!

@vabauer & @tupalev - I think you will be pleased with the prints. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. I was expecting standard poster-weight.

Look into getting The Hatch painting print too. The signed ones are still less than the posters in the ARG.

@andalone Thanks for posting the Thomas Hannsz link... I'm tempted.

JSky..Interesting observations on the Barracks you have. Yea the juxtaposition of the primitive style of the cottage over the photographic reality of the jungle is suppose to elicit the Surreal. Yet for me, as already indicated, the “ cute” of the cottage disconnects the effort. Another way to put it is..It lacks Teeth. There is no Bite. There is very little sense of tactile wrong because the artist is too “cute” about it. The conflict is made “ cute”.

It can be seen that the cottage is as The Others see themselves. Everything comfy and casual with no regards to their surrounding, an echo of their “ we’re the Good Guys” view of themselves.. Again , there is a missing “ wrongness’ about their self awareness in the print. I used the word mendacity in my post. That word has more teeth than this print.

The danger of mixing styles seems evident in this print. Lea Bell’s Triangle is also in the “ primitive” or naïve’ style. In her work she is uniform in that style. There is a uniform presentation. In Nathans work..he mixes the styles and it causes “ interference” in what is being communicated. The Surreal is seldom “ cute”. Matter of fact.. just a quick glance in the poster banner Zort has at top..indicates a majority of darkness being presented.by the artists.and Nathan plants the darkness in the hills rather than in the cottage. This print may have worked for me if it was done just the opposite.

Perhaps Ethan under the cottage fixing the pipes,, or Julie with bandage on hand, or some sign of earthquake would have helped steer the eliciting. But as you point out..not.

G'Day Argies!

I agree JustThinking, "That room that looks like an 1800's salon full of pictures" is very intriguing to me too. It could be easy-to-impossible to find out what/who's it might be, but it's worth a shot. Is it a painting or a photo? I can't tell.

Congrats Dan!

That's interesting about the canvas effect on the painting prints. Makes me want to even more get the Black Rock after Xmas expenses are over. The dog painting really gives me the creeps, he looks like he's poking through a hole cut out of a painting! It's a really nice piece of work but it makes me laugh (in a good way, not a mean way). :-D

Thorsten, I'm also glad that you're sticking around! Hope that you can track down your missing poster, gosh. BTW, I kept getting that screen as well, I had to keep backlinking and starting over, ugh.

LOL Eugene. X-D

I think that this poster would have really clinched the feeling if a contrail of the falling plane was in the sky as well, leading to the smoke that just looks like a cumulonimbus cloud without the contrail evidence. That's just my opinion as an artist.

Brendan said...

Getting one of these posters has just gotten crazy. How did people get through the screens? I going back to the previous screen...

... did anyone have success just refreshing each screen through the process? Crazyiness!

Unknown said...

That's how I got my order to go through. After each screen of the checkout I was getting a database error (too many users trying to access the site which in turns accesses the database can take a database down!).

I just hit my refresh button in my browser and the next page displayed with the proper info. After several tries my order finished and went through.

Just Thinking said...

Yes, it was mad, but for some reason I kept laughing. Wanted to mention that they must have done something to speed things up, and that I was very happy to see the URL wasn't on the "list". If only I could have avoided the "FORBIDDEN" screen.

Unknown said...

hey everyone...

first off it was nice to meet some of you at spin last night. i must say, i was slightly disappointed at the shwag (dharma ping pong ball would have been epic in my beer pong playing days... now? eh...), and i'm actually bummed i didn't get the print. i think it would have been an interesting contrast/companion to jacob's cabin.

which brings me to my question: is there a way to track your poster order? i got a confirmation letter and receipt for jacob's cabin but i didn't notice the transaction from my account, so i'm worried i might have mistyped my number or something...

any help would be super awesome. again, nice to meet those of you at spin last night and thanks for any help.

Eugene said...

Off topic, but a quick congrats to Dan if he has not left already and sigh of relief for lostsailors.

On topic, I also keep looking at the room. The 2 figues on the right look ghosty and alomst appear to be holding hands.

I think S6 is going to be full of surprises.

Zort70 said...

Mike, try going to

http://actuallyitsketchup.com/dcpb/xr/body.php?module=account_order_status&id=1

However the site is down at the moment, it always does this after a poster reveal. We have always assumed it is down to try and tidy up the fallout from yesterday.

Amy Lynn said...

Basically, this is what happened...

There were probably 20-30 fans there, many from LostARGS and other forums. There were two girls there from EB. When I got there, my friend Gail and I went over to the bar, ordered drinks and got set up on the WiFi. Because we were in a basement, I was worried about being able to reach people by phone to give them the URL, but we ended up getting into a chat room with a bunch of LOST fans, and were able to text message/tweet okay. Much of the staff played dumb when we asked them about what was going to happen, but we were assuming there were going to be balls or paddles.

At exactly 6 o’clock, the very large HD screen in a corner of the bar started playing the ping pong scene. We hightailed it across the entire place to see what was going on. Because the URL wasn’t one of the leaked ones, there was LOTS of confusion, and we had to watch the video about three times to figure out what the heck it said. Everyone was tweeting the URL/posting it to lists VERY quickly, but very few people seemed to be actually GOING to the website, which I thought was strange. Very few people were trying to buy it. Anyway, there was a rumor that someone had a Dharma ball, but they didn’t seem to be anywhere. We ended up chasing down a guy who worked at SpiN, who got us a few balls, but said that the rest were already taken *shrug* while we were watching the video. Oh, well.

The site still wasn’t live yet (this was about 6:15/6:20), so I got the idea to go and get a recording of the video, which turned out to be a good idea, because nobody else seemed to have done so, or if they have, they haven’t shared it yet. I actually had no inkling that there was anything important in the video other than the URL, I just thought we should have it for archival purposes.

Anyway, a bunch of us hung out for another half hour or so, and then left in good spirits. We heard rumors about some orders being cancelled, and that there was a print already on Ebay, but honestly, the (very cool) print was the furthest thing from my mind. I was just happy that the reveal had gone smoothly, and was impressed that Tyson had tricked us with the URL. In my mind, this MORE than made up for the Crumbs fiasco. Maybe some people weren’t overwhelmed by the ping pong balls, but it was nice to walk away with something LOST related, and a good reminder of the night. The reveal by video was VERY cool, to me, and I’m always happy to have nerd conversations about LOST in a bar.

Eugene said...

However, the site is down. Don't know if that's for good or just for now.

Amy, sounds like it was a blast and lots of people there too. Most of the other reveals have very small amounts of people so it seemed like a good turn out anyway. Glad you all had fun.

Just Thinking said...

Thanks Amy-I had a feeling this might be a "bookmark" event as they might have expected lots of people, so had a smaller item. Would have been nice if they spread the pong balls out to you all though.

That must be the most people at a reveal so far, and interesting to see how many different info sources they came from.

Amy, thanks for that run down on the night. How great that so many showed.

I have a feeling my mistake when trying to order last night was to hit the back button when I saw an error page rather than refreshing. Morning all!

I got hit with a migraine as yesterday's buy went down, so I took a nap after, then ended up not being able to get to sleep until way too late. Then come back to read through this mornings posts, so nice and drama free -- to find the Anon posting done away with...Smokey got to it huh?

Zort -- you do an unparalleled job of making LOST ARGs fun, a true community, and all the while maintaining diplomacy and at least an attempt at sanity ;)

Mel, Milo, LT, and Zort -- I am so sorry you lost out on this print.

Dan -- congrats!

lostsailors -- so sorry to hear what happened, but glad you still have gainful employment.

Thorsten, I had the same error messages pop up, and even had similar issues with the Danger print. Last time I kept trying to start over, but learning from that failed experience f5ed through the error messages this time. It worked, even though I had to refresh sometimes 4-5 time a screen! That and some LUCK, IMO.

Amy Lynn and Slodis -- THANKS again.

Where is the good Reverend in all of this turmoil?

I have to agree with Mel about the print missing a LOST focal point. I like how Nate portrayed the island, but the house itself wasn't really enough for me. I think Juliet at the door would have been a great add. Also, kinda hard to tell that the smoke is actually smoke and not a cloud. But, overall, it's a great print. I'm warming up to it, but it I think Nate did a fantastic job.

Regarding "That room that looks like an 1800's salon full of pictures":

That was a pic of actual 17th century painting "The Linder Gallery Interior" painted by Flemish artist Jan Bruegel the Elder, and which has bee kept in private collections for some time (at one point having been taken by the Nazis).

This piece is said to lie "At the intersection of art, science, and mystery" and incredibly fitting to out LOST plot.

This is an ARTICLE ABOUT THE PAINTING.

This is a SHORT VIDEO that identifies some of what you see in the painting.

Michael John Gorman, curator of the Trinity College Dublin's Science Gallery, became obsessed with the artwork and created a Web site and book.

LINDER'S WEBSITE -- this site is amazing, is interactive -- you can zoom, pan and everything in the painting is labeled. Any LOST fan will appreciate the attention to detail.

A 5min VIDEO of Michael John Gorman talking about the painting. He explains what the man and woman represent.

I think RevMilo has tweeted that he was not able to purchase The Barracks.

ObFuSc8 said...

Hiya yt!! Good to see your here, away from our ABC.com boards :)

Here are direct links to the Thomas Hannsz prints:

Jacob's Dog

Black Rock Storm

And mrtibbs -- GREAT catch on Hiroyuki Sanada -- on first view I though, Miles morphing to Faraday, then after the migraine/nap woke up and somehow already decided Hiroyuki Sanada. My brain worked it out while asleep!

Amy Lynn said...

Rev has the print.

ObFuSc8 said...

Your welcome, all. It's really my pleasure. FINALLY something to research, and probably tied to s6.

This was actually another weird coincidence. I mentioned it to my Astrophysics prof from highschool who's wife is a studio art prof. They posted on my FB page last night, then I googled away!

At the intersection of art, science, and mystery -- THAT is where I want to always be!

ObFuSc8 said...

The Rev said last night he didn't get the print, did he find someone who gave/sold it to him? I'll check out FB.

Amy Lynn said...

Yes, someone got one for him.

@The Karma Initiative

I'm here. I had the same database errors others got, but just kept trying and eventually the order went through.

I didn't panic, just stayed calm and kept trying. :/

My order was about 1/2 way through the sell out I think... 243x

Amy Lynn said...

Guys, posting your purchase numbers doesn't mean anything in relation to where they stopped selling them.

Capcom said...

Exactly where I like to be too, Obfusc8. :-)

@Lottery Ticket, I hope you are still around. Did I read that comment correctly, your are not posting here anymore??
So glad I wasn't able to read some of the apparently more nasty comments by ANONS.
@ Zort, thanks for deleting those & making changes for posting. You are awesome.
Thanks to everyone that went & covered reveal for us. Looked like a good time!
Thanks to Amy Lynn for video!
Thanks to Maven for keeping us informed!
Thanks to ObFuSc8 for info on "The Linder Gallery Interior" sooo cool!
@ lostsailors, glad u still have a job!
@ vabauer - loved the 5 stages comment, been there.

this is Brian G posting under a friends G mail account since I dont have one...

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question everyone already knows the answer to, BUT... I work in a screen printing shop (we do mostly tee shirts) and I'm a general fan of most things screen printed, but these are the first prints I have ever bought, and I must say its turned me onto alot of cool artists and when this is all said and done and I have some extra money, i could very well pick up pieces non LOST related.

Anyway, do any of these prints actually get printed by the artist/designer, or do they get them printed elsewhere? and for this specific project, did all the artists have to make a uniform descision (to print them them selves, or to get them printed elsewhere)... Just curious.

I love that the artists are putting in so much time and effort as it is, but to think that they could be the one spending massive hours doing the actual printing is pretty crazy. Nate Duval, if you happen to read this, I would love some insider info on this. Thanks!

AmyLynn and everyone attending yesterday's event, just wanted to say a deep thanks, you guys had a great experience but also risked missing the art. Your reporting is essential to the experience and frankly would not be nearly as exciting if we had to wait for the post to the official site. I also look forward to future nerdy conversations about Lost, perhaps at ComicCon if some of you are going next year.

Secondly, thanks for both links to other art from the show, I already bought the Black Rock and the Hatch art, they both look pretty awesome and I didn't know they existed until today! I am kind of a newbie Lostie, only been so for almost 2 years, but still as crazy as the next one for the best TV show in history!

Cheers to all and hope you have a great weekend!!

I'm not going for a full set & I doubt I'll be asking anyone to sell me their poster, either. But thanks for thinking of me. :D ... But yeah, I've got my fair share even if I miss the rest.

Got all my posters in an art portfolio now and it's given me my first chance to really look at them in person, which is nice.

Not leaving them in the tubes is crucial, I'm seeing, as the earlier ones I purchased that have been in the tubes for a couple months are a pain to deal with... whereas the Swan and Walt's Kidnapping were much easier to deal with when getting them into the portfolio. I'm now going to have to carefully weigh them down to keep them all flat. :s

I love the cupcakes... though I think I would really enjoy some "Crash" cakes... :-)

Glad to see the Anons are finally gone. Things seem much nicer already. Thank you Zort, for taking such good care of us here. If we are a village... than you are our mayor.

I was lucky enough yesterday to have immediately tried refreshing when getting the MySQL database error. I had to do it 3 times through the last 3 screens, but was lucky enough to get all the way through. I'm 12 for 13... still just missing "The Crash" (sigh).

My wife was trying again this week (in case I couldn't get through), and has really gotten into it! LOL! She got the same errors, but tried opening a new window instead... then couldn't even get to the login screen. I think her competitive nature has finally kicked in: she vows to get through next week! It is so awesome being married to someone who is just as huge a Lost fan as I am!

Thanks again to Amy Lynn and the others who got the URL for us. As this one wasn't on "the list", we would never have been able to get it without your help... you are awesome! :-)

...And Friday the 13th isn't so bad, when it's your birthday! I figure the two kind of balance each other out. LOL

hey ya'll just checking in.

Yesterday my big project that is due every year was due, that and I had to arrange for an aunt to pick up my little one so that I could have a shot at this print.

2 machines, both got several pages deep into the order process, and died, 3 times each. I was gutted.

After that I left to not think about any of this for a bit.

15 minutes later, I got a call from a fellow lostie who got me covered thankfully, but I am still gutted for each person that had a miss.

I stayed away from here yesterday so that my presence did not lead to further disruption.

I am probably going to save catching up on the blog comments from yesterday for a but, from the amount there are, I am guessing things got hairy.

Have to run and take care of a traffic ticket now.

And as for Tyson, well I am at a loss for words right now, I heard the gods play dice and texas hold'em

dylansdad said...

I was on Space Mountain with my kids when this went up, so this was this first reveal since the Hatch that I've missed.

I think this one is an interesting contrast to Jacob's cabin last week. Sometimes Lost is dark and ominous and creepy, and sometimes everything is bright and cheery and seemingly normal until they reveal there's more going on under the surface than meets the eye, or subvert our expectations by providing an unexpected context to what we thought we were seeing/understanding.

The last two prints use different dwellings to reflect both the light and dark moods of Lost--dimly lit trip to a scary dark jungle cabin VS. a bright, cheery suburbian house in the unexpected setting of a sunny tropical island. I would have picked this up as a companion piece--they make a nice set.

Hey guys. Lurker/light poster since The Dharma Van. I more or less bought this print as I enjoy Nate Duval and this particular print very much, but as it was an impulse purchase I'm not 100% on it. Shoot me an email at dfreshz@hotmail.com with a request for purchase or trade of other poster. If I don't see any trade offers that pique my interest, I'll draw a name from a hat and sell it at price. I'd still like to see the print before deciding against it, but I figured I'd put it out there. Thanks for reading and if someone can recommend a ARGer that is particularly "deserving," whatever that means, feel free to e-mail me also. Thanks!

Sorry to get off topic here, ie not poster chat, but I think I just broke my brain.
I am having a season five rewatch, coz I got the DVDs.
Just started watching the Variable.
Now this is all speculation but…

1) Say the Juliette triggering the bomb means it resets the series and the plane lands in LAX
2) All our losties on the plane get on with the normal lives.
3) Ben and the other carry on doing what ever it is they're doing
4) Widmore continues his search for the island
5) The freighter lot carry on living their lives
6) What about Desmond???
He still will have crashed on the island, with or without the hatch and all the button pressing.
Everything he did on the island was independent of the losties, apart from leaving.
So what I'm thinking is will Desmond get a different timeline where he's still on the island?
No baby Charlie, no reunion? Will he just get sucked back onto the island from the hospital after the bullet wound? But I supposed that would never happen either because he wouldn't have been there to get shot by Ben, who would still be on the island anyway!

I've really confused myself here, but Des is my fave.

Anyone care to help untangle my brain…

MrTibbs - that's the magic of it - the brain tangle. If you can get this one worked out before Season 6 begins, then my hat is off to you. My only sincere hope is that they convincingly pull off timeline changes, cause and effect, and so forth. I can't think of a single book, movie, or television show that has pulled it off with 100% conviction. I really had high hopes for "Frequency" but it didn't totally congeal either, for my fragile mind at least.

I think I figured out the art behind this print. The Barracks were always sort of fake. It was the fake little world Ben created to keep and hold all of his people there. He wanted it to seem as much like their real home to keep them there, but it wasn't their real home. That is why the house is cartoony looking while the island is realistic in comparison.

kiwilostie said...

ObFuSc8 said...

mrtibbs -- Desmond Hume is "uniquely, and miraculously special" as we have heard from Daniel himself.

I have remained, for the most part, spoiler free and wish to remain that way until this is all over. We did get those teases of ATL in the Comic Con videos, but I remain in the WHH "camp". I can see a couple ways that TPTB could integrate the concept of ATLs (a la It's a Wonderful Life, or some consciousness jumping between ATLs without actually jumping into one). Since Des is special, I have thought that any deviation from WHH would involve him. And besides, without O815 what would the motivation be for any of them to go baaaack? I guess they could do what they did with the O6, have their off-Island lives fall apart (Jack's addiction, Kate's running etc) -- but would that believable motivator to have them all decide to get to the Island i they never crash there? This is why a reset wouldn't be believable -- for me.

Your #5 says "Widmore continues his search for the island", but if there truly were to be reset, we don't really know that would be the case. If the O815 never crashes, then the O4/LeftBehinders never end up in DHARMAtime, so Sayid doesn't shoot Bensy, so Kate doesn't take him to Richard for the Templification. Then maybe Bensy doesn't grow up to be as manipulative and scheming, and Wids isn't banished. So then Wids wouldn't be searching and Des wouldn't have crashed? If Wids doesn't leave the Island there may be no Penny, so Des could lose out on a soulmate though.

How's the noggin now? ;)

Walkindude125 said...

In regards to the Alternate timeline posibility, you have to keep in mind that the Alternate bit would start in 1977 at the Swan Construction site. If the bomb DID wipe out the energy, then they would never have to build a computer to discharge the energy safely, which COULD TOTALLY affect the lives of people like Ben (what if Rodger decides to leave the Island and get Ben away from all of the craziness of DHARMA life after the Incident?). If Ben never lives on the Island post '77, then Juliet might not get recruited by him (via Richard)and so on and so on. Plus, if there is no need to Push the Button, maybe Desmond will never go to the Island, since his one "purpose" to do so has doesn't exist.

These are just speculations ofcourse, but to prove the point that if we do have some Alternate Timeline stuff to deal with, we need to remeber that it starts ALOT earlier than Sept.22nd, 2004.

mrtibbs said...

ObFuSc8
Noggin still twisted!
I did consider your suggestion, but I figured the catalyst would be the events in the finale. But then that doesn't work because everything that has happened in Lost led to that moment, them crashing on the island, pressing and not pressing the button, turning the donkey wheel, leaving and coming back and the time travel all led up to the incident. If you think of all the on island stuff being linear.

So the realities fork off at the moment the bomb goes boooom! (as does my brain!)

So then in the new season so instead of flash backs will we get reality and alternate reality flashes?
One on Island where they carry on and it changed nothing, the other set in a world where everything happened as it should've done if they'd landed.
Then maybe fate will lead them all back on to the island in some different way…
Trying to illustrate that fate gets you to the right place eventually? It seems a bit final destination to me.
What happens when two realities converge?

I dont know, I'm tired and not even considering as I type!

I think I'm going to watch the whole thing from the start. You watch things with a totally different perspective having the new knowledge of a new season. I even thought that the whispers could've been echoes from the timeline that was created by the incident. Perhaps when you come close to your alternate self you connect in some way.

I even read one theory somewhere that they never leave and end up hidden in the temple. Like some sort of council who inform Jacob & Richard of how things should run. So everything is choreographed in some way. Hence Jacob going round being a serial groper!

This is all probably nonsense but it good to have a set of decent people to chat about this stuff with!!

thorsten said...

awesome, kiwilostie, good to hear that. Have a nice weekend!

Capcom said...

"Frequency" came close to getting it right, but I still have questions about it also also.

I like your blog Thorsten, I'm going to take some time soon and read it, probably tomorrow. Today is babysitting day.

I reckon that we will get the entire ATL vs. WHH thing figured out and then TPTB will pull something else altogether. But there are a bunch of guys at Bigmouth's blog waiting for Juliet to end up nekkid in the forest like Dez did. :o)

ObFuSc8 said...

mrtibbs -- "So the realities fork off at the moment the bomb goes boooom! (as does my brain!)"

Yes, I guess, for ATL. If you believe that WHH, then nothing changed. The combo of detonating Jughead's core within the EM anomaly breach WAS the Incident.

If you instead decide that detonating Jugead's core somehow set forth an ATL, then that ATL would have to begin in 1977, at the detonation. For ATL's to avoid TT paradox, the ATL must remain separate from that point onward. So if you consider your described ATL, and in the ATL O815 never crashed on the Island on 9.22.2004 -- and that is what I wrote about in that last post.

As you said -- "everything that has happened in Lost led to that moment" -- exactly why I still think WHH, and don't think there's a believable way for TPTB to set forth a RESET/ATL. (except as I posted before.)

I have felt a bit starved for this type of discussion inthe off season as well, so apologies to other ARGers, I don't mean to hijack the discussion.

We've been trying to keep some discusion alive at the ABC.com board, though the board format has gotten so uglified that too many are staying away.

Come check it out if anyone is interested. We have a way to view that board with a different "skin" so it's a little more esthetically pleasing.
