12th Poster Roundup 427

Well what a day yesterday was, fast sell outs, fake URL's, and another great poster.

First off we have a couple of reports from the reveal from the people that went down to Super7 in San Francisco.

Jo who has her own Lost blog at - jopinionated.blogspot.com went down and reported back, read the details below for a chance to win a T-shirt from the reveal.

"About 20 Bay Area LOST fans braved the drizzling rain to stand in line at the Super7 Store in San Francisco earlier today for the next URL reveal.

Everyone was very friendly and the anticipation was palpable. Once they opened the door at noon, we politely filed in and each picked up custom LOST gelaskins for both a 15.4" laptop and iPod Touch.

The staff at Super7 are huge LOST fans, and seemed to really enjoy the event; they gave us a little gift bag with a Super7 sticker, small notebook and very cool toy inside. After I gave them my card & custom LOST pin, they gave me a very cool tee from a Japanese artist (Gargamel) because it has the letters ARG in it (see photo).

They certainly have a sense of humor, and appreciate the effort and lengths that fans are going to in order to acquire posters and other swag. I would like to give the tee away to someone who wasn't able to join us today, so those who are interested - simply let me know via Twitter (@jopinionated).

It was great to meet all of the dedicated fans in line, and experience part of this off-season LOST adventure. Thank you all for the comments, and for following along here and on Twitter! - Jo"

Take care, and thanks to Zort70, Lottery Ticket and everyone from the LostARGS site!

Next we have Justin -

I made it to Super 7 to have a good time chatting with the clerks and fellow LOST fans (some of whom drove an hour...). Refreshed the URL a zillion times. Went through the process of logging in (I had previously bought Love Triangle). My fatal mistake, I guess, was one mis-entered password. I got all the way to the final purchase button and then blammo! 404 error. Aaaargh!!

Anyway, at least I didn't leave empty-handed... The iPhone skin is cool, the MacBook skin is going up on my wall, and (aside from the nifty swag bag they gave out, with a little notebook and a "Ghost Land" "Blowfish" figurine in a metal box), I spent the $50 I would have spent on the poster on two excellent shirts from Super7. And, perhaps most uniquely, I got a LOST fan button from jopinionated! Thanks for bringing those!

Definitely worth the trip across the Bay.

Upon further reflection: Who knew it was going to take half an hour, and then sell out in, yes, it had to be less than a minute? It was insane; I thought I had a chance, but no.

Of course, I figured in advance that being at the reveal meant giving up a little bit of likelihood of getting a poster. Mainly because I was on my iPhone on 3G, not wireless, which slowed me down a little bit. And, as I mentioned, the password flub. I might have gotten in right before the 404, had I gotten it right the first time.

But (again) it was well worth it, because instead of just not having a poster, I don't have a poster but I have all that other cool stuff and a good experience.

The store staff members were really nice; they personally understood the fanboy/fangirl phenomenon, being fanboys themselves. I did mention to them that I thought it was sort of unfair that TPTB don't open the site up to purchase at the exact moment of the URL reveal (and they actually said they could pass that feedback on to TPTB).

I'll keep trying with little hope of getting one... and in any case it's a decent way to pass the time before LOST comes back...!

-----------------------------

Then finally lets leave the final word to Daniel Danger who popped into the comments last night -

Yes Sandman! Creepy cabins in the woods! I remember in high school we would drive by this field kind of out of town but close enough to town, ya know what I mean? And there would be some story about what happened there in that old shack or that was where the satan worshipers would make sacrifices. Why do kids like to scare the crap out of themselves? This print totally reminds me of that shack!

Roxanna said...

One thing I really like about this print (even though it is complete opposite from the theme) are the stars you can see right above The Cabin. It reminds me of when Karl was talking to Sawyer about how he and Alex would look up at the stars and make up names for the constellations. I guess there's a little bit of happiness in this print after all.

Breathe - ahh that's nice. You could cut the tension with a knife. What, who has a knife?

Everything reads much nicer if you skip the anons and the repies thereto.

@LT - assuming your still tracking, received the SWAN 140/300

amy get off my back. i know the show. i lived though the agony of season two, pretty much a complete waste. i lived with the hiatus, i just didn't make a quilt to live with it. i turn off my lust for, possibly the best show of all time after the season is over. i wait with baited breath for each new episode. i couldn't care less for the love triangle.

of course i can get any lost info off the net, anyone can, but you guys are so paranoid that anyone that you dont see as a fan, just can't really be a fan.

I also like the way the light is shining in the window of the cabin. It looks just like the light shining in the window at the Dharma greeting/new recruit orientation place when Sun & Frank are walking up from the dock & you hear Smokie & Frank is like "What was that?" & Sun is like "Just the wind" or something to that effect. Not very good memory. And then they go in & "Christian" is there! I love this show. Let's talk about LOST:)

Roxanna said...

@Ginger
I hadn't thought of that, but I went back to look and you're right! I like that it's the only light on in the whole cabin.

Ginger said...

John Locke has all the knives Attorney Greg, or aren't you a fan? JK ;)

roxanna, ginger - nicely done.

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, as Dory would say:) Which, for a fish, is necessary to breath, I think.

Thanks postercal:)

mungonna said...

Okay..who has actually been seen in this mysterious shack that seemed to have the ability to disappear?.Ben and Locke..some blur of a figure that said " help me"...Christian,,Claire, Locke again.

Locke seems to be heavily connected to " Jacobs Cabin." This is the place he once refused..then was in when re-directed by Christian and Claire..and at least,,didn't stop it from being destroyed. Was it The Man in Black who was " captive" in Jacobs Cabin..and the extremes of the Undead Claire and Undead Christian..that provided the loop hole to have Locke breath fresh air to Man in Black's perspective?

Jacob's Cabin..as the secluded remote..shrouded ..even mysterious place .. A place of forgotten,,Lost,,but not entirely dead, dead..The place of Olde Truths held..and from which new beginnings spring.

There is a lot of ..life.. in this murky print.Kinda like a swamp. Swamps can be terrifying and beautiful. There is the magnificence, the surreal, of this print..imho.

I also think back to Hurley. When he encountered the cabin. I think he had a bad feeling about it. Especially after that face popped in the window & scared the crap out of him! I think Hurley is "blessed" w/discernment. He just didn't know it. I think he does now. Especially after Jacob's visit & getting the guitar case. It's pretty obvious the MIB was trying to scare Hurley & make him think he was backsliding to his mental problems. WHY? Because he is blessed & the way the enemy attacks is by making you doubt yourself. That's all that is required. That little voice inside telling you your crazy. You're not good enough. Your nothing. But Hurley knows better now.

Ginger said...

Hey Maven! Welcome to the discussion. How exciting for you kiwi! Sorry for the incorrect use of your instead of you're. I meant to go back & edit before I posted:)

Hello, anon - you said "Oh, and midday, you forgot feed information to other forums in your list."

I'm sorry you feel that way. I dont know what has led you to believe that. But I reserve the right to remain a member of and participate in whatever other forums I choose. I do not however "feed information." There is a distinction. I have never: fed the remaining urls to anyone on eb privately or publicly, ever. Nor have I posted crucial info, *especially*, on release day. I have a loyalty to to Zort and the working philosophy of this forum. You can choose to believe that or not - if not, I know you are not alone. Feeling a little like Juliet here.

You said-"Unless you are from both forums. Then do we believe you?"

Again, your choice. I congratulate Zort on his earlier statement that both places have value and both places also have bad apples.

You said -"And ... i can post anon... because I am not required here to provide information."

You're right, you are not required to. It makes it pretty hard to address you directly though.

ginger-
You know, I think people often forget how essential Hurley has been to the development of the story. I have always seen him as the one who brings everyone together when times get too crazy. I was watching 'Solitary' and it always makes me so happy to see the survivors having a good time with their golf playing on the Island. Hurley keeps doing these sort of things throughout the show, and so I can see how MIB, or whoever the "bad" part of the Island ends up being, would want to keep attacking him.

kiwilostie said...

Just looking at the dcaapb site, and see that even though the Cabin is produced landscape, the poster is portrait, ie there is heaps of black block under the print itself. Cool and different.

Ginger said...

Yes roxanna! The first time through this series I wasn't a Hurley fan. I just thought he was a silly side character. But after watching the whole series again, a couple of times, I have really grown to love him. He is like a shining light in the darkness. Even though tragic things have happened to him and he thought he was cursed, he remains the most positive character in the show. He definitely has a zen thing going on about him. Jorge should be proud of his portrayal of Hurley. He has excellent comedic timing too. Always makes me laugh.

mungonna said...

Aaah...Ginger..I don't see MIB as the enemy..nor do I see Flocke as the bad guy.

I saw Hurley's encounter with the " eye" at Jacobs Cabin as rather humorous. I mean..Hurley Is Comedy. His whole character Is Irony. Comedy is Irony..So..sure,its funny, ironic, that when Comedy, Irony, is tasked to look at itself..see itself,,that it would run away in fear. It like a variation of the Groucho Marx line about being invited to join a Country Club..Any club that would have the likes of me..I wouldn't join.( paraphrased.)..

So. Jakes Cabin..is the place.. hidden and secluded,,that everyones Truth is tucked away and forgotten about. The extreme opposites of Claire and Christian..brought the completely distraught man of faith to the cabin..from which he began his path to New Faith,, being Reborn.

Flocke,,is the Reborn.. the Start Over..that everyone has talked about since season 1.And it all started..at Horaces place to find himself..Jacobs Cabin.

I've said it for awhile now. I think Hurley is the key. I think Man in black knows that, and has tried to eliminate Hurley a few times. I think back to the Dave ep where Libby saved Hurley in particular. Hurley's lack of a dark past, his desire to do good, and his free will are the things that the man in black can't account for. Hurley's choice to return is what makes Jacob right.

I'm probably way off here, but I'm sticking with it for now.

Roxanna said...

hobbit-
I completely agree with your thoughts on Hurley. However, he is still mysterious to me.

@hobbit - I agree with your Hurley theory. I think he'll be put in a postition to decide the ultimate fate of the island.

Ginger said...

I don't know Mel, I'm more of the mind of hobbit here. I think we will have to agree to disagree. Locke is dead. So anything that goes around using dead people's visages to fool & manipulate the living is evil as far as I am concerned. Christian, Yemi, Ben's mom, Locke, Claire, Alex, Rousseau's husband, all dead. All used by MIB/Smokie? to manipulate the living. Gotta go read to daughter, be right back.

We're all playing nice now Zort, Nite nite:)
Now the quote at the bottom makes me think about who Ben is talking about. He's never met Jacob. But he knows of the cabin because he takes John there. How does he know about the cabin? Has he talked to "someone" else there? Did "someone" tell him about the cabin. Was it knowledge he gained in the temple? Hummm....

Ginger said...

Did he dream about it? He told John he used to have dreams.

mungonna said...

For now, Ginger,,just consider,,since season 1,,most have said , that this was a story about 2nd chances,, starting over..rebirth. So, when a charcter,,the character as Man of Faith, implying what one puts Faith in..does indeed get a 2nd chance,,starts over..is Reborn..alot of the Fans say he is evil..???...uuummmm..just because he isn't reborn as you may wish him to be..doesn't make him evil. Doing away with a deity that sits around and watches catastrophes happen ,,and Then gets up off his butt to offer platitudes of sympathy to the victims..seems like a good move by FLocke,,and what more beauty can one ask..than to have Deceit,,in the persona of Ben.to do the deed, in recompense for all of his lies.?

Talk about comedy? This is about as Dark Comedy as it gets.

May your little one fall asleep to your voice.

Roxanna said...

One of the greatest thing about LOST is that we are able to make our own conclusions about everything depending on what level of understanding we have about the different philosophies and mythology that is presented. I can see how Ginger's ideas about Hurley impact the show because I have already stated my views on how Hurley is somewhat a comic relief of every day Island life. I also like the comments being made about rebirth because that is one of the most talked about topics since The Incident. The depth of this show is just amazing, and I enjoy reading the different interpretations of what it brings.

Anonymous said...

Hurley...'loop dude,loop'

Ginger said...

I see what you're saying Mel, I think;) But, to me Locke was reborn at the moment of the crash. He got his second chance THEN. He was seriously kicking boar butt & taking names! He was in his element. Where he always wanted to be. After being in a wheel chair! Talk about 2nd chances. He was helping people. Even when they didn't want his help. Jack, Michael, & Charlie come to mind. Building the crib for Claire on her birthday! He was awesome! He helped Boone get over Shannon. He also helped him die, but everybody makes mistakes:/
I guess that's my problem. I loved his character so much. Then they killed him & now he's Flocke. Manipulating people to murder:(

MEL -- glad to see you've made yourself "official" here.

Danger's site has a nice, high res pic of the print posted. The muted greens on black lend a dark eerie tone. The only source of light are the flashlight that the man (Locke/Ben) is holding, and the faint light from within the cabin. Possibly a hint of moonlight. The trees/foliage in the forefront with the Cabin set a bit further back, in contrast with the man who is so much smaller, seemingly less significant. All of this with the subtle streaks of rain.

The print really captures, for me, the fascinating yet haunted feeling I remember when I first watched Ben lead Locke to the Cabin in TMBTC.

1miletogo has a thread at the Dark/spolierTV forum with analysis of "Poster moments" and has screencaps posted that may have inspired each of these prints.

Ginger said...

Yes roxanna. I know that there is a lot that I don't know. I'm sure there's a lot about LOST that flies right over my head without me even knowing. I'm not that versed in surrealism, mythology, psychology, philosophy, cosmology, physics... the list goes on, BUT this TV show has made me more interested & more of a reader than I was before. Amazing how a TV show can do that!

Roxanna said...

Maybe I just hate disagreements, but I am seeing both sides of the rebirth situation. I have a theory of Locke always knowing all along what was happening on the Island, so that's why he was helping everyone get on the right 'path' (ie, everything Ginger was talking about in that last comment)

More on that later if anyone's willing to listen.

Great discussing these ideas with you guys. It's Saturday night so I'm going out :)

OK, so this is totally off topic, but I've been working on this paper all day so I have to share:

I'm taking a graduate level course about the films of David Lynch, and as a part of the course we spend quite a bit of time on the show Twin Peaks.

My professor, being a Lost fan, has allowed me to do a comparative paper between Lost and Twin Peaks.

I'm 9 pages in and this is, by far, the most fun I've ever had writing an essay.

Guess time does fly when you're having fun!

maven said...

Hurley is such a likeable character from the beginning. He seemed to have started out as a comic side-kick, but he has become more and more involved in the mythology of the island. He was one of the few that got to see the cabin. And he has evolved into the voice of the fan...asking questions that we are all wondering about! Dude, he's one of us!

And, yes Ginger, Jorge's Dispatches from the Island blog is hysterical. He has such a wonderful sense of humor and seems like such a regular guy enjoying this experience.

Attorney Greg said...

Oh yeah, I finally joined with the help of Zort - thanks.

mungonna said...

Ginger..don't forget,,that Ben didn't willingly take Locke there. Also,,Ben the Deceitful one could " see "Jacob but not hear him..and Locke couldn't " see" Jacob but did hear him. Point being..the scene was presented from mostly Locke's point of view. Faith, at that point,, was blind to who,, or what ever, was in that Cabin. But..got just enough out of the encounter,,to bring him back later...after his disastrous run of being the new leader as is.

Attorney Greg said...

@(n) - ever watch Lost Highway? The first time I thought I missed something and rewatched it a few days later. Nope.

Attorney Greg said...

@ Trial Attorneys - Okay, so I'm confused, do you want the Jacob's Cabin (unofficial shorthand title, sorry DD) or not?

mungonna said...

n)...If you want an A on your paper..be sure to use the word Surreal,,as much as possible.

Unknown said...

...how bout a nonprofit art thing then? :T

Ginger said...

Ya Attorney Greg! Where did Locke learn to throw knives like that? I really doubt Anthony Cooper taught him. He did take him shooting, but I just don't see that dude throwing knives, ya know?
When I rewatched after this last season, I had a theory that maybe Locke was MIB from the beginning. Setting everybody up for his loop hole. Being nice to everyone, so they would follow him & throw their support his way in the final battle w/Jacob. There was one particular episode at the beginning of season 1, can't remember which one, where it ends with the camera coming around Locke sitting on the beach & it has this growling sound a la Smokie. Totally creeped me out and made me think he was a "bad guy." Anybody else remember that? AND, when they're in the foot & he tells Jacob "You have no idea what I have been through to get here." Something like that. I just don't think he is referring to the time since Ajira 316 crashed. I think he is talking about a long time before that.

kiwilostie said...

Ginger - Yeah!!!! I totally thought that at one point, that Locke was MIB from day 1. We will see Im sure!

Unknown said...

@ginger- I'm thinking the same thing. Theres an episode where locke and a bunch of other people are walking through the forest and locke says it's going to rain and it does. idk He seems sketchy

Ginger said...

My second most favorite TV show of all time (n)! Twin Peaks was cool. Have you read "The Diary of Laura Palmer"? Crazy stuff.

kiwilostie said...

Which means however that the island didnt cure Locke, so thats the only sticking point for me, as the island/Jacob obviously has done, ie Jacob bringing Locke back after exiting the building via a window...

Ginger said...

David Lynch has some crazy stuff. Mulholland Drive is another movie that was like, Huh? From what I remember. I love love love The Elephant Man. SOOOO sad. Blue Velvet = freaky classic. Wild at Heart, love Nicholas Cage in that one, doing his Elvis thing;)

Ginger said...

Yes Kiwi, but it still healed Rose right? In my theory Locke died in the crash & MIB is doing his thing w/using dead people. BUT, I know there is other contradictory things to this theory, like Locke being able to touch people. "Chrstian" wasn't able to touch John down by the Frozen Donkey Wheel...But I guess I just shot down my own theory talking it out here:))

Ginger said...

WHO KNOWS!?! Only the writters & maybe Matthew Fox;) Can't wait for S6!

Amy Lynn said...

Ginger, that's a fascinating theory, and gives a whole knew meaning to the end of Walkabout. Maybe it wasn't Locke discovering that his foot moved, but rather Esau/MiB discovering he had inhabited a body? :)

kiwilostie said...

Ginger - thats why Im sooo looking forward to S6. We are gonna get some really reeaallllyy good answers to this stuff.
But I still wonder about Locke, and when exaclty MIB took him over. Has there been any other majorly traumatic events for Locke, and therefore a MIB takeover moment? A real change in behaviour? Not really, and like you said, hunting, shooting, etc stuff which MIB would be well versed in.

Ginger said...

Yes Amy, totally makes you see the whole series in a different light! I am probably completely wrong, but I do believe when S6 is over, whatever happens, we really will be able to go back & rewatch & see the whole series through new eyes.

Ginger said...

Yes kiwi. I also thought maybe after the Dharma death pit MIB could have taken over. John did throw a knife in a woman's back!

Amy Lynn said...

It also gives a whole new meaning to The Zombie Season.

Ginger said...

Mmmmmmm brains...more brains....

kiwilostie said...

Yes Ive thought that too. At the end, we will see that all this stuff thats happened is all linked, and is all heading towards ONE final 'thingy'!!
I remember early on being facinated, as we saw how the characters were becoming so 'linked' to each other, ie past meetings/dealings with each other etc. And when I saw Jacob off island doing stuff with them, sometimes many years ago, I was so excited! Man, I cant believe a TV show has captured me in this way. I can honestly say no show has ever captured me the way LOST has, and I know there will be none in the future thats comes even close. Ive NEVER bought tv dvds before, but Ive got all the LOST seasons...

mungonna said...

Ginger,, yes.. Lockes original 2nd chance...lets talk..Have you noticed,,that every time Locke gets even close to leaving the Island..or when he actually does leave the island...he suffers a injury that makes him a cripple again..or puts him smack dab back in the wheel chair?

To me..this harkens back to the original premise of the Surreal...Reality as Illusion...People don't survive a plane coming apart at 10,000 feet...So,,what is being presented in Lost,,is reality as Illusion..This is at the foundation of the Surreal. This is the frame of mind that saw WW1 as an Illusion foisted on the middle and lower class by the Royalty and Rich and Powerful Nut Jobs of then Europe.

So,, Lockes " miracle" disappears everytime he gets close to leaving the Island...and eventually vanishes when he does leave the Island. The " Illusion" of his Miracle blinds him to his real condition. He is blind,, does not " see" who is in Jakes Cabin. Sure, he means well,,they All mean well..but as obvious as it is.. i remind..their "means" haven't gotten the ends they desire. Yes, we're talking foundational changes ,,and what could be more foundational change..than dumping a deity who only enters the picture after the fact..and a beginning where the slate is wiped entirely clean.

2nd chances imply a creating of the future.. Creating a future with Hope involved, suggests a future that doesn't repeat the past. Flocke getting rid of Jacob suggests no repetition of the past. I mean.. how many times have we seen Locke meltdown in disillusionment? So much for his miracle and so much for his means. He is reborn now. If you thought he kicked butt before,, I suggest you take a close listen to Flocke as he is. Hes calling it like it is. Will he survive? He has potential enemies for sure. We'll see.

Brendan said...

Ginger- Thats a solid theory. The season 1 backgammon game between Locke and walt supports it as well (referencing the black vs white).

Amy Lynn said...

If that theory pans out, I'll be good with it. It's superior writing to introduce Locke through Flashback, just like every other character, but never introduce him to us in the present. And it makes more and more sense why our Oceanic 6 (plus) survivors, who had all been touched by Jacob, would all start turning on Esau as his motives became more and more apparent.

ObFuSc8 said...

Ginger, kiwi and Jesse -- Hi!

I'd have to disagree with you, I don't think Locke was always Flocke. We have seen Locke, our Man of Faith, gain and lose confidence both in himself and the Island itself. This level of uncertainty seems like too great of a deception even for MIB to pull off.

If Locke was always Flocke, why wait until S5 to manipulate Ben into killing Jacob, why not act much sooner?

In Dead is Dead, Flocke has a level of confidence and knowledge of the Island that Locke never did, and goes far beyond just sensing that's it's going to rain.

And remember, we have Flocke but also the body of Locke that Ilana and crew have brought to the Foot of the Statue.

Amy Lynn said...

Yeah, I was just wondering, if we've been following Esau the whole time, then who did Ben kill?

jeremy said...

MEL - I love your analysis, but I just want to point out that Ben later revealed that he couldn't see Jacob either.

So between the two, Locke had the "more real" experience by hearing something that Ben didn't.

That being said, I don't have any suggestions myself, I like what EVERYONE has suggested, I'm going to try not to draw too many conclusions until next year, about May or so.

Ginger said...

Mel, your so deep. You make me wish I was smarter! The Flocke scene I love is where he is manipulating Ben. "Why wouldn't you want to kill him?" LOVE it. Ben's thinking, hum good point.
Brendan, love that scene too.
Kiwi, I am waiting to get them all together someday, I hope. I've rewatched via ABC.com & checking out DVDs at the library. Libraries rock! Hope they get S5 in Dec.

ObFuSc8 said...

Black vs white, wrong vs right, the eternal battle of dark and light -- but which side is which?

Attorney Greg said...

Nice, wondered the same but there are physically two Lockes. Dead in the casket being carted around by shadow of the statute people and the one in the foot with Ben "killing" Jacob. So while there is something definately off / special with Locke in the beginning, not sure when the spilt happens.

Attorney Greg said...

Black is the harder to see one.

Ginger said...

True dat Obufusc8. Like I said I'm probably totally off base, but it's fun to theorize. That's another thing that always blows a hole in that theory. The many times he loses faith in himself. Why show that if he were MIB? Maybe MIB has feelings too;)
Amy, who did Ben kill which time?;) There are so many...shall we take a stroll down memory lane?

Brendan said...

Black vs white, wrong vs right, the eternal battle of dark and light -- but which side is which?"

Something crazy just occured to me... expresso = black.

The Expresso Beans people not only stole the posters, they killed Locke and Jacob.

EVERYBODY PANIC

Attorney Greg said...

Jacob's wearing white, I suppose that is a clue. Would make him the good guy, which would make The Others good (since they supposedly take orders from Jacob; though they may have been taking orders from the entity in the Cabin who may or may not have been Jacob, whom we have never seen in the Cabin, only the foot).

Christian has been directing some people, but not sure if he really "speaks on his [Jacob's) behalf."

Ginger said...

OMG Brendan!

kiwilostie said...

The first time I really started to wonder what on earth was going on, was when Locke told RA as they were walking to the foot, that basically, he wanted him to kill the remaining Ajira survivors - WTF!

ObFuSc8 said...

Attorney Greg -- IMHO, but I think it really is when A316 lands and we see Flocke.

The Flocke of S5 has a level of confidence and knowledge of the Island that we never saw in Locke.

Ginger said...

But, Attorney Greg, in the surreal world, black is white & white is black. Right Mel? Did I do good? Do I get an A+?

Ginger said...

Yes Obfusc8. He has a purpose. His loophole has come to pass.

Ginger said...

Another movie reference for those that didn't catch. JFK, Kevin Costner. We're through the looking glass here people. Black is white & white is black.

Ginger said...

Speaking of conspiracy theories. I'm a fan. That's one of the biggies. Best Evidence.

ObFuSc8 said...

Jacob vs MIB, but beyond that things remain nebulous. Sure Jacob is seen in a whute shirt, but does that alone make him "good". Does MIB dark shirt, or his manipulation's of Ben make him "bad". That remains to be seen.

Where each of our Losties loyalties lie, we will soon see.

And what of the Others? We have assumed they follow Jacob. But, at least since Ben became their leader, they have followed Ben's manipulations. And do the Others know of MIB existence?

Okay..Suggestion time..David Lynch is a blatant Surrealists..no if ands or buts...in your face Surrealist. No subtlety like with Darlton.

Its really not difficult to grasp this Surreal thing. Its just a different way to see things. A different perspective.,,The most difficult thing about it is..letting go of the current way one thinks and perceives. Its a tough habit to break. The Surreal is a frame of mind...a state of mind...LOST is just a sequel,, an updated continuance.. of Andre Breton's "Nadja"..Lost picks up where Nadja ended..a report of a plane vanishing over an Island.

With that..I suggest a read of Breton's 1931 was it,,lecture on.." What IS Surrealism..But before even that..an Intro to his lecture is highly recommended,,since Breton is by far ,,a dense and convoluted read..much like LOST, hes all over the place with allusions to philosophers, artists, poets etc etc. I swear..reading Breton,,IS like watching LOST. Here is a link address. Suggest to read M.Caws and Rosemont intros first and then take Breton a slow bit by bit. Then go watch an episode of Lost.

http://www.studiocleo.com/librarie/breton/bretonpage.html

Click on the Biography section in the upper left hand side of the page.. The Intros are there.
After all that.. suggest to read Magnetic Field lines.. Humor Noir..etc etc etc..When you think you have it,, read his Surreal classic " Nadja"...if you want to see how possibly LOST will end.. then read Arcanum 17..his last book. I also suggest a read up on Rene Magritte. His words on Surrealism and his art ..have been represented in LOST very much also.

Above all.. have fun. Its a real hoot when you get it.A warning tho..all the mysteries of LOST will vanish, once you understand or grasp Surrealism.

Exactly Obfusc8! Love it! Jacob tells little Katie to be good. That worked out. Jacob tells Hurley it's his choice. Jacob tells Jin & Sun their love is special & to treasure it. Just tells Jack his candy bar needed a little push? WTF? Jacob distracts Sayid while Nadia gets hit by a car? WTF! Tells James sorry about your parents, here's a pen to write that letter that will lead you down the road to revenge? WTF! Sorry your Dad threw you out that window, but hey your alive John! I can totally see how this could go either way. Hadn't really thought about it that way until now.

I was a huge fan of Lynchs work even before taking this class. I've seen all of his movies a few times, Lost Highway is one that I still have trouble with.

Consider this on your next viewing: Lynch is exploring the idea of identity, Pete is Fred. Pete is like the idealized version of Fred. Also, Dick Laruent is Mr. Eddy. I missed that part the first time I saw it.

Also, the story is non-linear. I know it's weird but the story isn't in a traditional linear order and all the bits with "Pete" are a fantasy world.

I have not read the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, but I'd like to just haven't had the time.

Concerning the running Black/White motif of Lost: what the original surrealists called dialectic materialism..Polarized thinking and perceiving,,yes folks..the us vs them that stems from right/wrong..good/bad..left / right..etc habitual thinking and perceiving. Thinking and perceiving that way enslaves you to the eternal conflicted state of mind. There is much proof to the view that conflicts only get exaggerated to a point of violence. With violence as the end point to all conflicts..then why should we keep thinking that way..now that Man has the ultimate Violent capacity to wipe out every living thing.

Its not that black is white and white is black..its, that way of thinking ,,no matter who or what is black or white in their eyes..always escalates to violent ends. Mankind can't afford to think that way anymore. We are enslaved to the " end" being okay. Wiping out humanity is NOT OKAY.

So the Surrealists saw a Unification of a man,,the uniting of his external world and internal world conflicted state..as an end to the conflicted state of the individual,,leading to a person at peace with himself..and thus eventually a Mankind,,at peace with itself. In that Unified Individual,, they saw a Liberated ,,unencumbered, individual..free to explore all the grey between the polarized Black and White.

It was revealed to be just a shopping cart and a Buy Now button.

But the last few weeks have had more drama than any previous ARG, with interesting characters, plot twists, betrayals, losers, winners. Haven't you been caught up in the emotion?

Is this the real ARG? Is Reverend Milo real? MEL? Bathroommonkey?

Where will this go? Has it been planned out as a reflection of the final season? Friends become enemies, no one can be trusted, everyone for himself, recriminations, and possibly, finally, redemption?

Or is "truth stranger than fiction"?

@MiddayShadows
Thank you, well said. We had a pretty nasty fight a couple of weeks back, I apologise for that. As far as I remember it started out because I said somenting about the EB forums, I am glad that this is behind us.

@kiwilostie
Sure, kiwi, thorsten@thorstenwulff.com, you're always welcome
As is everybody else, of course…

While flying through the comments, I believe that Locke was Locke till Ben killed him. He became Esau after 316 returned the shell to the island. Esau used Christian Shepard as a sleeve after 815 crashed, but could not really use ist, because Jack knew he died. That is why Alpert always collects dead Others, to make sure they will not be used as Shells. I am sure, Jacob passed down this as a major rule. Hence the Others burial ritual in the sea. The whole TT ruse Esau pulled off in season 5 would be useless if he had Lockes body right after the 815 crash. And that there are two Lockes, the good John dead in the coffin, and the bad John in the statue, well, Esau is a shapeshifter as far as we know. I always assumed that Yemi and all the other apparations were Esau, not Smokey. On the other hand, we are dealing we two converging timelines here, who knows…

@mungonna
Very nice, to bring in Breton…

Hey all.

I was lucky enough to get the season five dvds yesterday and it was the first chance I've had to rewatch since they originally aired. Also the first chance I've had to discuss with people, so forgive this if it seems naïve. Certainly not up to mel's standard!

It's great rewatching when you know what happens!

When the island disappears, is it physically moving?
I know Eloise was plotting where the next window would be, but was that the next hole in time, or the next place the island would appear?
The only reason I ask is that when Juliette makes the bomb explode - would it completely destroy the island? I was just thinking that when Ben turned the donkey wheel it started a chain of events which eventually led to the bomb exploding in the 70's and potentially destroying the island. Thus wiping it from existence in 2004 and disappearing.

I know that this is probably lame, but now I've got some decent lost heads to discuss with I thought it was worth getting some opinions!

thorsten said...

okay mrtibbs… (sound of cracking knuckles)

The island stays in the same location, but the people watching are slipping into another universe…

The penudulum marks the points were the different verses converge with a distinct rythm…

Jughead did not explode, just its fission core. The core of a hydrogen bomb from the 1950s was a tiny plutonium bomb, just enough to start the hydrogen chain reaction. You will see that the fallout of Jugheads core is isolated behind the containment wall in the Swan™…

Thanks. I felt that the style of the illustration needed something kind of organic... also it feels 'Island'! I'll go with simple black for the Swan Station I think.

Sorry Thorsten,
have to disagree with the containment wall in swan containing the leftover radioactive mess.

Everyone always forgets that behind the containment wall is the incident room.
incident room pic

and before people start jumping up and down about via domus canon:

"The look and design for the "Incident Room" came from never before seen blueprints given to the developers by the Lost crew for the game. Although the game has been stated to be non-canon, the designs are the creators' intended layout for the blocked sections of the Swan station. "

Jugheads RL design, and what how you turn a core into an impact triggered plutonium grenade...well I dont have the energy.

thorsten said...

Okay, Milo, but…

Juliet bangs on the core…
it explodes.
If we assume that seasons 1-5 played out in a timeline in which this happened, where does the fallout go?

ReverendMilo said...

Thorsten,

That is an ongoing dispute.

Some say it got "cancelled out" by the exotic matter that is contained down there.

Others say, it's just deep enough.

I say
1. in reality, the depth they moved mere 10 kiloton nuclear tests underground because of the first time they tried and spewed a bunch of fallout everywhere.

2. in reality two energies dont just cancel each other out - matter + antimatter does not = nothing, it equals a really large release of non-homogeneous energy (really big boom boom)

So for me, the fact that they are combining an unstable pocket of exotic matter with the broad spectrum energy release from a nuclear core tells me I have to wait and see what TPTB decide the laws of physics are on an island that itself.

And for me the islands explanation involves an extreme curvature of timespace, two wormholes (a big one that the has an event horizon that surround the entire island and hops from the pockets of EM energy on earth, and a smaller one always anchored in Tunesia)

So, ummm, the answer to your query is - i dunno?

thorsten said...

Right, Milo. Jughead exploded next to the exotic energy, and created the wormholes and the whole timeloop which is Lost… Thanks again, Jack!

;)

ReverendMilo said...

;)

Jackface may have been enough to cause the whole mess..

Okay, now i get it..I have to sign in over at Google first..THEN i can post here..wts!..Two great posts ( imho) have gone down the toilet from my ignorance..oh well. Strive on. So you all get the 3rd edition. perhaps fortunately. See if I can find the grove again.

Some interesting flow of ideas above. Yes, freeing the mind of its encumbrances, prejudices, getting outside the box of its institutionalized parameters, gives ability to see " Reality" as stranger than fiction.

It is with that state of mind that I relegate the " science" of LOST to the container Paul found his painting in. There is No Truth,, in the science of Lost. After all , people do Not survive a plane coming apart at 10k ft. The " science" of Lost is Reality as Illusion. Its presented as Real,,but holds no Truth.

The Prints we are here for and about are a excellent example of what I'm getting at. As pointed out more than once,, they are nothing more than paper and inks. That is their tangible reality. The Truth of them is what the viewer is brought to, upon looking at them...how the viewer connects to them, is the viewers Truth of the Print.

Its easy to understand how the texture of Lost,, its endless parade of Shocking..brings us to a Feel. There is the Truth of Lost. How many times has an episode's event made us feel like they had us by our guts and were twisting an tying them in knots in the exaggerated and distorted goings on? Yea, pushing the viewer out of it comfortable mundane state of mind for some Truth takes some extreme measures.

It is this tucked away..secluded,,far away place,,the place that makes deceitful Ben's hand shake and tremble..our own Jacob's Cabin,, on our own Island..that Lost in its extremes is trying to get us to find.

That it has been destroyed, the inhabitant inside now liberated,, is Good News . The example is for the Lost viewer to realize.

I think it's Ben TBH but he does seem to have the baldness of locke though.

Also, while zooming in on iPhoto, I noticed lots of lines across the whole page. Maybe this is just a scene that we haven't seen on the show, just Ben going to the cabin himself, while it's raining, with a flashlight. Otherwise, shouldn't we be asking, why is there only one person in this scene instead of two?

Chris, the Dharma Van looks much better in person, doesn't it?

Amy Lynn -- wonderful!

As far as the detonation of Jughead's core near a pocket of exotic matter and strong magnetic field, I'd have to agree with Milo -- we'll have to wait to see what TPTB decide the physics of thaat may be. There is a construct called a magnetic bottle that is in theory supposed to be able to contain a thermonuclear reaction, and since the physics describing exotic matter is so nebulous to begin with, I can see TPTB using a similar explanation.

OK...back to work.

Just in too- can't let a good fall day go unused- winter's coming.

Really nice of you to make that Thorsten-lovely lyrics Amy.

Mel- I can't throw away the "real" world yet to explain Lost. Not that I think a surreal fantasy couldn't contain truth or be compelling. If Lost ends up with no more scientific basis though than say, Harry Potter, then I think Carlton is going to have more problems than the army of squirrels he has been twittering about.

Amy Lynn said...

It's funny how much thought the LOST writers thought into little bits of dialogue... was just watching "The Greater Good" and chuckled at Charlie singing "down came the rain and drowned the spider out"

JT...The Surreal is not a fantasy. To say one's subconscious connections, how ever they may be established , are a fantasy,,denies a good portion of what it is to being, a Human Being.

JT said...

Hmm-OK-how about- if Lost turns out to be a depiction of the subconscious the way a Magritte painting is, rather than a story that could really happen somehow, even a really far out somehow, that is going disappoint a lot of people.
There have been so many discussions about physics and time travel and what happened happened. I don't think the writers ever gave any sign that people should forget about that stuff.

JT said...

Sorry , you put in lots of stuff while I was writing- so I guess you do think they are saying for get about it?

andalone said...

@thorston - AWESOME poster. I just printed it out to include it in my scrapbook of the Underground Art Project.

mungonna said...

JT..yea..not forget about it..but see it all, in a different way.

It has nothing to do with smarts..age..nationality, gender..etc. It has everything to do with freeing your mind from preconceptions..getting out of the box of institutionalized parameters..finding the freedom ,,the desire,,to realize the infinity of ones Imagination..to come to the door of "anything is possible",,and opening it.

The Plot of LOST makes no rational sense what so ever. Therefore,,let go of rational thought and experience LOST with what else you have. Yes,, you do have something else,, besides rational Thought. Trust it.

mungonna said...

..As to the disappointment of a lot of people.. Their " disappointment" is based in their " inside the box" insistence that Lost be what they demand it to be. The Outrageousness of fans putting demands on a show that is about escaping enslavement of Time and Space..qualifies those fans to be seen as an "army of squirrels." Please don't enlist in that Army..and if you are already in the ranks.. GO AWOL!
I suggest rather..to let the TPTB bring this show to its closed loop with everything that it has had all along. Illusion, Mystery, Metaphor, and Desire. Its about creating a future now. Do you want your future LOST to be disappointing.. or fulfilling. TPTB are going to present what they present..Its up to you, how you will connect to it.
