Live Auctioneers Accepting Absentee Bids 74

In the comments andalone mentioned that the people handling the web based side of the LOST auction - LiveAuctioneers.com - have started to accept absentee bids for items in the auction.

Click here to go directly to the first page of the auction

See below for some more info on what you are actually bidding for below.

Another thing to note is that for all items there is a link to allow you to ask the auctioneer a question. It is basically an email link, but also gives you the URL of the item to include in the link so you talk about the exact item.

I would suggest that if you are unsure about any item you ask a question about its use on screen or if it was worn by the actor, etc.

This item already has 9 absentee bids on it !

Now for those new to auctions absentee bids are bids you place today for the maximum amount you would wish to spend on the item. You are not in a competitive situation with other bidders at this stage. The fact that 9 people have already bid for Jack's passport doesn't mean that anyone has outbid anyone else, it just means they have registered an interest.

The auctioneer will look at all of the absentee bids on the day of the sale and when the item is auctioned will bid up to your maximum bid against other absentee bids, and anyone actually in the room.

The advantage is that you don't have to be there so you won't be tempted to keep putting your paddle up to bid.

The disadvantage of course is that anyone in the room can make one more bid and purchase the item.

Also remember that any successful bid will have to pay a buyers premium of 20% of the sale price plus tax plus any shipping needed.

Ooops- too fast for me- so I'll repost:

It looks like absentee bids taken by what comes in first in case of a tie- so if you want to bid say, maximum 600$ on something, you have to get that in before someone else does the same amount. That drives people to get the bids in, without even knowing what other people's amounts are.

I was looking at the baseball, #1086, and comparing it to the screen views-Dogen spinning it in "What Kate Does" and then in "Sundown" when it drops on the floor and when Dogen holds it sitting at the Temple pool.

None of those balls seem to have that line of (Japanese?) writing on them, or the round stamp with English writing. The onscreen balls also seem lighter, and look to me like there is a D-24 on the spinning one, and a pretty clear D 6 on the Temple pool one.

Maybe for Dogen -#6 baseball?

Anyway-again it looks like you're better off to assume these are all the back up props. Unless someone comes out and says "we only made one of those."

If anyone is interested DarkUFO has the full New Man In Charge video at the moment.

I've just watched it, but I won't say anything about it just yet as it would technically be a spoiler.

For those who are comparing auction items. I think Locke's suicide note to Jack is different than the one used on screen. If my memory serves me that's what was said when some of the items were showcased at last year's comic con.

Apparently, Profile in History is really screwing around a lot with us. As reported in the previous post, some people have now gotten emails (not me, yet) that say there is a new policy: pre-registered bidders going in person to the auction has to buy a catalog AND a ticket to the exhibit. This is a complete reversal from what many of us were told yesterday!! I already have a catalog, so that is not the issue unless they would make my husband buy one too since he is a registered bidder. I do not want to buy a ticket to see some items (which I already have seen for free at Comic Con last year)...the cost for us would be $109 (why not $108) for 2 tickets, S&H and fees/taxes! If this is the case, I am seriously thinking of not going at all! They are not considering the fans. I just don't think they are able to handle the overwhelming interest in this thing.

I'm thinking of messaging Damion on FB and see if he is aware of all the goings on!

I don't understand something about Absentee bids. Can't you actually bid online LIVE on the day of the actual auction or must you use the early-bidding online system?

Zort70 said...

Jason, from what I understand you can bid live on the day.

The absentee bids are for if you cannot make it in person or can't be online during the day.

I have emailed Profiles in History and they have said they will clarify the full picture on attending some time later today and will send me an announcement to post at the same time.

maven said...

Yes, Zort, Megan just called them and they said they will be giving out a press release later today. They might be changing the procedure again!!!! Looking forward to see what they come up with time!

@Zort

Thanks for the tip off. Love the 12 minute of new lost! Oh I want more!

(avoiding spoilers) I particularly liked the subtle use of music when the camera panned round in the vehicle!

Yes- just spoke to Profiles in History- they say they are still working with ABC on the details. I'm going to fax in my registration just to get the ball rolling- but if I do, indeed, need to buy a catalog and a ticket- then i'll just bid from home.

wah.

thaeagle2003 said...

i just sent an email via the link on liveauctioneers to profiles regarding faradays journal and its authenticity so ill let you guys know as soon as i do

Unknown said...

I will also be bidding from home unless they change the requirements. Let's hope we get a good update soon--and that it's the final say!

Zort70 said...

I would suggest if anyone is serious about bidding via the internet they read the T&C's for the live internet bids, this first part of the clause suggests to me that the live bidding site may not be reliable enough -

"PLEASE NOTE: On some occasions beyond the control of Profiles, the LiveAuctioneers bid software or the Internet itself may not physically keep up with the pace of the auction. In order to help avoid disappointment, Profiles recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now...."

Unknown said...

For me, the fear of absentee bidding is that someone live will outbid by one small increment. Yes I have a maximum bid in mind, but I would like to be present to decide if it's worth throwing on an extra $50. I am also concerned that the online auction could fall behind or lapse. Thus, bidding in person feels the most comfortable, but at this moment I cannot justify over $100 per person to do that. That's money I could put toward purchasing a prop.

Justin said...

@Megan: I couldn't agree with you more. Why front over $200 for my wife and I to go down there not to mention the cost of gas and hotel (since we're 8 hours away) when that could go towards actually getting something.

This whole process has been extremely frustrating.

I mean all of this cropping up yesterday/this morning is in DIRECT contradiction to what I've been told all along my Profiles employees. My personal opinion is that Profiles was not nearly prepared for the onslaught of interest in this auction from us, the rabid fan base. I really think poor planning is to blame here.

I am personally hoping that ABC/Profiles realizes that they are choking off the very thing that made LOST work -- the fans. I mean first, the exhorbitantly high opening bids. Then making someone literally have to pay over $100 (ticket and catalog) to go and enjoy the auction and exhibit with the HOPE that they might get to take home a piece of the show for ANOTHER couple of hundred at least is very, very sad. What happened to "pieces for all LOST fans' budgets" as was stated in the initial interview with Joe Maddalena?

Here's to hoping that we get a definitive answer today and that it is good news for us fans who want to go have a good time. If not, I hope ABC and Profiles is ready for the onslaught of unhappy LOSTies...

The Kharma Initiative said...

Similar to an ebay auction, placing an absentee bid before the auction start time doesn't do much beyond raise the opening bid price once things go live. The auction house prefers you do that, of course, and the more absentee bids placed on items, the more fans will panic/get excited and start placing their own absentee bids. It serves to extend the auction time to weeks instead of just a minute or so.

I watched the last Hollywood prop auction on liveauctioneers.com and things move fast while online. They have a lot of items to go through in a short amount of time, and they keep things moving. Of course, that hurts people who are not sure how much they're willing to spend or get caught up in the excitement. They'll either miss out while vacillating or spend more than they intended. Which is what PIH wants of course. Their job is to maximize sales for themselves and their client.

FYI: Just spoke with Profiles in History. They are not saying that any announcement would be made today...most likely on Monday. All decisions are being made by ABC and they have not heard from them today. I expressed the fan base disappointment (to put it mildly) about how this is being handled. We should not have to pay to see props. The guys did say that ABC is setting up a whole exhibit...recreating the island with the props.

I told him some people are mad enough to not even go now and he said "that's the nature of the beast". When changes are made you loose some people. But there are plenty of people that want these items. I don't think one person calling to complain will make any difference.

maven said...

I sent this Damon on FB:
Sorry to bother you with this, but we don't know who else to contact. Many of us long fans are very upset the way the Lost Auction is being handled. I'll try to give you a brief history of what has been going on:
When the catalog when on sale it was $55 which is a lot of money for many fans. I purchased it...it's beautiful and a great memento of the series. Fans could also download a copy if they wanted to. Then we were told that tickets would be available on Aug. 5th. Turns out they were $42 each just to see the prop exhibit. But adding on S&H, taxes and "fees", two tickets for my husband any myself would be $109. Then they wanted us to pre-register with credit card info and Driver License number. They would charge the card $500...if you didn't get anything, they would reimburse you...whenever that would happen, who knows.

Then yesterday they changed their minds again. They said if you pre-registered you would get free admission all day to the exhibit along with your bidding paddle. And they said they would not charge your card the $500. It would just be a "good faith" gesture. If you didn't get anything...nothing would happen on your statement. People seemed happy with that. Then some of us started to get emaisl late in the day on the 5th. The emails said a new policy is now "set in stone": Every pre-registered bidder would have to buy the catalog and a ticket to the exhibit! Needless to say, many of us felt we were being taken advantage of!

In contacting Profiles in History this morning we were told that there will be another new policy "set in stone" and a press announcement would be made later today (the 6th). Nothing was released all day. I just got off the phone with Profiles in History and was told they don't know when the announcement will be...maybe Monday. All decisions are being made by ABC. I expressed how disappointed us fans are. They did not seem to care saying that "it's the nature of the beast" and "there are plenty of people who want these items."

Furthermore, most items in the catalog have starting bids at $200 or above. This is not something most fans can afford. Nothing is really reasonably priced for most of us to get just a small piece of a show that has meant so much to us for 6 years. Plus the fact that, as of now, we are being asked to buy catalogs and tickets at ridiculous prices!

Thanks for letting me vent, Damon. I bet you feel that this show will never leave you alone! LOL But if you can say a word on behalf of the fans to your ABC contacts to indicate how upset we are feeling about how this Auction is being handled, we would so appreciate it.

You may remember me as the Quilt Lady (you and Carlton signed my Lost quilt at Gallery 1988), so you know I'm a true fan of yours and the show!

Thanks so much, Bonnie Green (aka Maven)

JPL... sort of, but I don't know from where. Either way, of course I ordered it! I was going to pull the trigger on one of two others, but I will wait now they're gone until DD releases his stock of them.

As for the auction - I'm slightly mystified why people are upset. Real props and memorabilia are always sold for large sums of money, and an auctioneers job is to attract that money. Maven, your beef seems to be that the show owes us lower pricing on these goods, and that the company have changed their approach as the market has become clear - the former is not true, and the latter common practice. I couldn't afford to fly to Hawaii for the S6 premiere, but I didn't complain that they should be holding it in London.

Goods will find their market value. if the prices set really are inappropriate, they will find their level.

John LaHair said...

@Ben - take away the words on wall and there is no doubt in my mind that this could have been a LOST print. Very eerie!

This was quite the surprise drop and at $50... couldn't pass it up. As mentioned before all my extra "fun money" is going to support DGPH. Picked up one of their prints last night and we'll see how the Space Cadet Topo project shakes out.

Auction is going to be fun to watch with my catalog in hand. Too much money to be spent in August... hello DVD release. :)

John LaHair said...

And one last comment on the dangerous print whose artist's name shall not be mentioned... only $50, limited to 150 and not sold out. What's up with that????

I was lucky enough to grab one of these, JPL. Great piece of art.

The new Entertainment Weekly has two really great Lost articles, one about the DVD set and another with a Darlton interview. I don't know if this was mentioned here but Evangeline Lilly had the original Sawyer letter that burned up in her house many years ago. What's in the auction is one of the many copies.

Just Thinking said...

Yes, we did hear that and I heard that interview before where she said it burned up in her house fire.

Do you think I should ask a fellow in Hawaii to try and contact the glass blowing dept @ the University of Hawaii to see if how many hourglasses were made?

IWish said...

@ Just Thinking...

Sure, why not contact the Univ? I know you have your heart set on the hourglass. Do whatever you need to - to investigate the item...it's a big investment. This way you'll know if you're bidding on something that was actually in the show.

OK- I've sent off and email. Can't hurt to ask!

JPL- The DD print is very interesting to me as I was just looking at a drawing lesson that uses just that kind of view of tiled flooring to show 3 point perspective. The chair would go off to the 3rd vanishing point.

Of course in the drawing example, the paving isn't crumpling up into pieces like DD's wooden flooring!

Just thought I would jump in and say hi to everyone. I have followed this site for a long time and finally decided to join in...here near the end. Living in the Midwest I have never had the chance to participate in any of the past LOST fan events. I almost attended Comic-Con on a couple of occasions, as well as Gallery 1988 and “LOST Live” but never pulled the trigger. Since this auction is likely the last chance to celebrate the show and meet some fellow Losties I have finally planned my along-awaited trip to LA.

As much as I look forward to participating in the auction, I am equally disappointed in some of the things coming to light here of late. I can’t begin to describe how badly I want to take a piece of the show home, but my focus now is more on enjoying the experience and spending some time with the fan community. I hope to meet some of you there!

Here’s hoping for a great send-off to our favorite show.

Maybe I will finally be able to let go...

-Brad

Wow haven't posted here in awhile. Hope I can remember my log in info. I'm not even going near the profiles in history auction.

I suggest looking at the ebay auction. I found something I liked then went and searched on Lost Media and found a screenshot of it. It turns out it was a rustic basket that was used as a prop in the scene where Jacob and his mother are by a fire. And it only cost me $8.00. I'm going to print the screen shot and place it with my basket.

Haven't see anything Maven.

In prop news- it seems per new post on the Prop Blog that the fish biscuit machine is the original one, but was repainted to be in a Dharma film- and that there is only one.

Anther item that might be like that is the crushed toolbox- #1150. The catalog says it was repainted after being used to stop the blast door from crashing on Locke's leg in season two. Then it was used in the s5 Swan implosion scene, pulled into the hole. So they were reusing-probably just the one box.

maven said...

I called PIH...spoke with Ryan...I stayed pleasant and so did he. He understands our frustrations. The bottom line: Right now the policy remains preregister/buy catalog/buy ticket! I told him buying a catalog is ridiculous since you're offering a free download on line! Also said don't know why we preregistered bidders have to pay full price to see the items we might be bidding on! I would accept a reduced price. Also, why are you selling 2 day pass tickets for $65 when the items are the same both days? He listened to me and really seemed to agree that I had valid points. Right now I'm awaiting a call back to see if I qualified for a free ticket for being the first 100 preregistered. (I did it on the 5th, so I doubt I'm in the first 100). I also told him people are awaiting making plans to come in person...they'd just as soon stay home if they have to buy catalogs and tickets! ABC is losing out on them! He said that PIH usually doesn't do things this way...no tickets involved. It's ABC who is doing this.

maven said...

Well, things are working out for me: I did make the first 100 so we will have free tickets waiting for us and we only have to have one catalog between us (which I already have). So I'm happy, and I hope things work out for everyone else!

Just Thinking said...

Good for you Maven- I think it's going to be fun in spite of the upset.

Thank you for the welcome, The Kharma Initiative!

Looks like I landed a spot in the first 100 as well. Since I was a couple days removed from the release, I am hoping that means that I won't have to camp out for a place on the auction floor.

I purchased the catalog this evening to finalize my spot. I'm certainly not happy with how Profiles keeps contradicting themselves, but I am just going with the flow at this point. At least with the catalog I am guaranteed to take SOMETHING home with me.

Official update from Profiles in History is live.

Not only is buying a catalog and buying a ticket (or getting a tkt for free) a requirement to see the exhibit, they're both required just to attend the auction and BID!:

Registered Auction Bidders (IMPORTANT!! PLEASE READ)

1. ALL bidders must be PRE-REGISTERED.

2. All bidders who wish to attend the auction and bid on the floor will need to purchase a ticket to the LOST Exhibit, IN ADDITION to purchasing an auction catalog and be issued a bidding paddle and get a seat on the auction floor.

3. The FIRST 100 pre-registered bidders who have purchased a catalog will receive one free admission, per person, to the Lost Exhibit. This is on a “FIRST COME FIRST SERVE” basis as tickets and catalogs are selling fast.

4. To purchase LOST exhibit tickets go to http://www.razorgator.com/tickets/theater/other-theatre/lost-auction-exhibit-tickets/. There are limited amount of exhibit tickets available and we highly recommend that you do pre-register and pre-purchase in-order to guarantee access. Ticket purchase price is $42 per day or $65 for both days.

5. If you have not pre-registered and show up on auction day, you may still register to bid, but will be required to purchase a catalog and a LOST exhibit ticket, pending availability of tickets.

From link

Cosmically Yours

I'm posting the latest email I received from profiles. My friends and I were also among the first 100 people to pre-register and therefore are getting into the auction for free. The catalog requirements are still a little confusing, so I'm just going to post it in its entirety. Also, please me sure to note the part about payment/pickup:

Unknown said...

"I understand your frustration about having to buy the catalog. The conditions are meant to ensure that those who are legitimate bidders are assured of a seat on the auction floor. There will be 500 seats. If on auction day there are less than that many people who show up, then I would guess that they will probably open the floor to everyone. My suggestion is to buy one for the group to share for now. You could always buy more on auction day, if you see that there will be a big crowd.

As for receiving your free admission tickets, your names will be on a RSVP list at the door. There is one thing that I want to clear up, and that is there will not be any invoicing on auction day. Consequently, buyers will not be able to leave with their winning lots. The auction data will be raw and will need to be reconciled before we can invoice everyone. I apologize for any inconvenience, but we will work with you to find the most expedient and reasonable shipping options. While pickups are encouraged, that would have wait until at least the day after (Monday)."

-Fong from Profiles

maven said...

@Megan: Yes, Fong confirmed to me that my husband and I (both registered bidders) only have to have one catalog between us! It still sucks if they go over 100, then those people have to pay an additional $42++ and the catalog...over $100 right there!

I know about 10 people or so meeting up around 9AM Sat. At least us in the 100 Club are happy now!

Unknown said...

@Maven
Yes, I am very excited to be in the club, but I'm still confused by what he said about 'buying more catalogs on auction day if there is a big crowd'. If I'm understanding him correctly, I can share 1 catalog for the group (4 people) and if it's a low turnout of bidders then we may complete the registration for the auction without each owning a catalog. However, if there are a lot of people, my three friends would have to each buy a catalog if they want to be able to bid, aka complete the official registration process.

So, all floor bidders will each need to have a ticket to the auction and a catalog. Right?

Justin said...

My wife and I were also among the first 100 and will get free tickets. Sent our registrations in on 8/6. I also received confirmation from Fong that we only needed ONE catalog for both of us which I had already ordered. So we are set! Just booked hotel rooms (right near LAX of course, how fitting) so they better not change their story again!! Can't wait for the auction and to hopefully meet up with some of you LOSTarger's! It's going to be great. Have any of you seen a pic of the inside of the hangar? It just screams Oceanic 6 press conference.
