Slovaltine Clues: Part 3 114

Here is Slovaltine Clue, number three, from Nick of Lostpedia. There is a LOST-related answer hidden in the image. Feel free to discuss it in the comments, but if you think you have the answer send an email to slovaltine@lostargs.com.

Congratulations to Steff, Scoutpost, September Valentine, Josh, Codysmom, and Steve D. for solving Clue #2 first. Steff turned in a blistering time of 22 minutes. Nice work!

Hints
Maybe you need to take a closer look at the problem.

Solution
If you zoom in on the picture, say 400%, you will see gray pixels on some of the letter. Take all the letters with gray dots on them and it spells Libby Widmore.

First! I know I can't believe I'm up so late. But it's not even midnight here yet.

Ok Dennis, I really just put all this together right before I noticed this latest post. But I lose you on the "chakana pattern" part. Is there a chakana cipher?

Scoutpost said...

Well I follow you. But can't find the cipher needed to decipher. hmmm. Maybe I don't know what I'm doing.

damn!

Steff said...

Damn i'm good =)))

@Nickb123:
i expected the other trick with text paragraphs.. the one when u have to cover most of the text and see just the letters at the end or the beggining (if it is centered)
this was more like brute-force method =) but i think that this is because of the comments in the first puzzle

Anyway, thanks for keeping us entertained =)

and what the heck is Chakana pattern??

Steff said...

oooh.. i understand the "chakana pattern"
now i have to go, but will be back in approx. 5 hours and i think i will finally solve the first puzzle =)

Nickb123 said...

@ Steff - yeah this one I think is the easiest so far to solve - I just whipped it up at like 2am last night lol.

As for the first one - if you have decent background on what pigpen actually is, and then decent background on a chakana, you can work it out.

Steff said...

yeah.. too bad i don't have Channel 4 in Macedonia =))))))

Nickb123 said...

OH! OH!

Has my clue-making source been uncovered?

lol, typing 'chakana cipher' into AOL brings only 4 results, and the only one of help is the channel 4 website. I still can't work out how this chakana pattern is supposed to work, quite, however. i know i'm close.

I read a few of CrazyBeardedJack's rants, and I kind of have to agree with him. Judging from what you wrote about how NO ONE has solved the first clue, and 5 (out of hundreds?) have solved the second just proves these are not very good "clues."
I mean, the first clues has been up for 3 days and Lost fans have been pouring over it and no one can get it right. And seriously "Eye (I) and green scribble?" Maybe it's because you guys are British, I don't know, but IMO these are terrible clues.

Dennis said...

For the record, I am not British, and I didn't come up with the first clue. I agree it was too hard (even Nick thinks so too) - at least as something to start out with.

FYSB said...

Well, I think the clues are a lot of fun, and even if I'm not solving them, I just learned about a boatload of ciphers from Googling "chakana". Learning new stuff is one of the things I loved about the other ARGs we've worked on together. So what if the clues are challenging? Trying to figure them out is a terrific way of stretching our puzzle muscles. I really appreciate the fact that Dennis and Nick have spent the time putting them together...it's a nice distraction and turned the negative of the slow pace of the game to fun reason for me to hit F5 again. One of the reasons we've all been coming here for years (can you believe that? years?) is that we just enjoy our online friends. So, thanks Dennis and Nick!

Drink more Ovaltine!

maven said...

I would like to add my thanks to Nick and Dennis, too! Even though this is way above my feeble brain, I'm enjoying lurking and seeing how frustrated everyone is! LOL Come on gang, what else would we we doing?

And thanks to David and The Goog for another great podcast! I don't buy Goog's whacky theory that the O6 will join the new DI (since I'm sure the new DI is not canon to the show). But I would so love an episode of the island prior to the DI getting there!

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

Finally solved the first clue.. what a brain buster.

The_Other_Other said...

I solved the second one but not the first ...

Nickb123 said...

Thanks fysb and Maven. I also really liked your comments on how even though some are tough, its given you a lot of knowledge about what different ciphers there are, and I'm sure now in future you'll instantly recognize pigpen codes! And braille!

This third one is actually not too difficult I hope - a few people figured it out within a few hours. Again though it is inspired by an actual type of code/clue from either history or TLE.

Hoku said...

Jeez, after 24 hours I finally got the second one! Still toiling on the first, and haven't started on the 3rd! Great distraction though!

I agree these are tough, I had no problem with most of the clues in TLE and Find 815...

Scoutpost said...

I concur! These puzzles are great and I'm thankful for them, even if they're tough and I need lots of help! That's what makes them great. I like them a lot better than the Find815 kind of puzzles. Thanks Nick and Dennis! :)

On a separate note, can we please not post the answers to the puzzles in the comments please. We are all operating in different time zones and may not be working on it at the same time. I don't mind hints and clues, but to give it all away in the comments is not fair. Ok- rant over.

Meatball said...

yeah, this was used in tle.

nice puzzles. keep it up.

The_Other_Other said...

Unfortunately I did not have the chance to take on TLE, can someone point out the puzzles which are similar or give a link to somewhere that would ... I've been search at lostpedia.

Nickb123 said...

I don't think the puzzle for this one was used in TLE. A less difficult version was used for Hanso Careers though.

Puzzle #2's style was used in Find 815.

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

GOt it. All 3 in the bag. This has been on fun filled Sunday morning!! Keep them coming.

lost2010 said...

I finally got the first one - after falling for every red herring on the page of course - I feel like this is a great tutorial on how to play these things.

Now on to puzzle 3. . .

Steff said...

i have been searching for a torrent for "The Search" from Channel 4 and i cannot find!!! what a stupid name - the search - the search for "the search" gives me only things like "search engines, lists, ......."

Nick, or anyone else, if u know how to find the episodes from this show, please let me know

Thanks,
Steff

TakesaVillage said...

I got the 2nd one. Thanks for the hints guys.I'm going to take the rest of the day off.Keep putting your heads together.

Nickb123 said...

Steff - its a fantastic show and I thoroughly recommend it. Its strength was that it was very factual and the codes contestants had to solve were real, but at the same time there was a lot of contestant rivalry and drama that mixed in the reality tv aspect. You can read in-depth episode summaries on Wikipedia though - and how the girl Saskia kicked arse, etc.

Unfortunately they never released it on DVD :(

The only way I know of getting it is to use the online "4 on demand" service - though it may not be possible to use outside the UK.

Steff said...

i tried the 4oD, but i'm from Macedonia. It is possible only from UK and Ireland :(

do you know some program that 'fakes' the IP so "they will think" i'm from the UK??

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

now THAT sounds perilous :)

lost2010 said...

Is anyone else working on this 3rd clue? Or is it so mind-numbingly obvious to the rest of you that you've already sent in your answers?

Just looking for someone to bounce ideas off of I guess. . .

Steff said...

@lost 2010, if you have experience with this kind of puzzles, then there are 2 obvious approaches to this kind of problems (text paragraphs)

the only hint i can give u without spoiling the fun of finding the answer is that the text (synopsis) does not matter [is not connected to the final answer]

Nickb123 said...

Just take a closer look!

Steff - I dunno, I once tried that to try and fool ABC.com so I could watch full Lost episodes for free lol... didn't work for me.

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

lost2010.... above is a post from nick that reads;

"I don't think the puzzle for this one was used in TLE. A less difficult version was used for Hanso Careers though."

That should get you headed in the right direction.

lost2010 said...

I tried writing down the first letter of each line of text in order and then in reverse order and running them through a Caesar cipher using a shift of 6. Then did the same with the last letter of each line. - -Nothing.

It didn't give me anything that made sense so I'm assuming that isn't a spoiler. . . . .

If it is, I'll be happy to delete.

lost2010 said...

Nothing's gray on mine. . .

Is my thought process anywhere close to right. . .not really looking for a hint just more of a hot/cold kind of thing. . . .

Steff said...

there IS a program that can 'fake' it as if u are from the US (although i haven't tried it on abc.com since i download the episodes from torrents)

Bring this over from the last post. I have read the posts yet so
it may not be pertinent now. You may have solved the puzzle now anon. :)

There's a third puzzle!?
I guess I should refresh my page. lol
I usually just refresh the comments until someone says New Post!
I probably won't do any good at this one either and I did lurk during TLE and participated in Find 815 so don't feel bad anon. :)
Usually there were a handful of people at each site that were good at code and shared when they solved it.
I've never solved anything difficult. And I just gave up trying to get my boat through the reef in Find 815. I'd get right to the end and hit the little hooked area. Ah well.

lost2010 said...

Well, I thought we were. I just don't seem to be seeing any more than those 6 letters I saw the first time.

TheFriggenItalian said...

At least you have seen something lost2010! My eyes are starting to blur! I tried Paint, MS Picture Manager... I just don't see anything sticking out! LOL

lost2010 said...

Leave him alone! It's been way more than 6 days and we're all still waiting. Waiting for someone to start this A.R.G.

But what if they don't. . .We need to start figuring things out.

A woman died this morning trying to stand on her head and read braille while reading through a red ruler I tell you. . .

Last week, most of us were strangers. But we're all here now.

And God knows how long we're going to be waiting here.

But If we can't work these clues together, we're going to . . . .

(Sorry - my mind wanders terribly - no wonder I can't solve this)

There was pigpen in Find815. Didn't get it then and still don't.
I just got lucky with the right combinations. :)
I guess puzzles aren't my thing.
Maybe I shouldn't be playing the ARG's.

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

2010... I want to help you so bad but that wouldn't be fair to you. The answer WILL be related to LOST and you won't even need an anagram solver.
