I've been saving that podcast for my commute Thursday. But all this buzz is making me want to get it out and listen early.

memphish said...

Marking for email. So bored by the ARG I actually cut my grass.

Ellen said...

Memphish, sorry I didn't get back to you right away, I fell back to sleep!!!
Yes, I am also aggravated by this arg....Lost2010, not to worry, I'm not that gung ho to torture myself! :D
Well, I'm up now...(*yawn*) sort of...
xxoo

memphish said...

No problem Ellen. I was sort of shocked by the time on that email. Not like we missed anything. ;-p

Ellen said...

LOL! Yes, shocking to be up in the middle of the night, DH has to get up to go to work anytime from 1:30am to 3:30am and of course, I get up with him...

I'm listening to Jay and Jack's panel from ComicCon and someone suggests that the O6 join the new DI to get back to the Island. Discuss.

Dennis said...

As interesting as a story line that might be, I don't think that's possible based on what we know.

Ben is leading the charge to go back to the island, he says that they need to bring John Locke too. Are they going to pull a "Weekend At Bernie's"?

BTW, how funny would it be to see video of a dead John Locke taking the DWY tests at Comic-con?

memphish said...

I like it. Fan videos needed.

Yeah, I don't think the O6 would be part of DI either, but I was kind of annoyed at myself I never even considered it. I think part of the reason I never considered it is that I still think of the DI as "bad guys" and don't want our Losties involved with them.

maven said...

Great to see "our" podcast publicized over at DarkUFO. You guys deserve it! Still bored!

Black Swan said...

Hi maven! Hope you had a great Anniversary!

dennis, I've been thinking of a "Weekend at Bernie's" scenario for Locke to get back to the island.. I'm sure some creative person out there will make a video and it would be hilarious!

memphish, I kind of like the idea that the O6 should join the "new" DI to get back to the island. Actually, if the island has "moved" where do you suppose the new DI will work? Is the purpose of the new DI to find the island again? hmmmm

Black Swan said...

And, yes, it is nice to see "our" podcast publicized at DarkUfo. I noticed nobody has commented, so I'm going to go over there now. I think we should all go over there and leave a comment.

Ellen said...

Agree with you there, Codysmom!!

I'd think part of the new DI would be trying to open pinholes to move back into the past to undo the Purge. I'm not sure if you'd need to be on the Island to do that or if you could move through the pinhole to the Island wherever and whenever it happened to be.

Olerica said...

Afternoon LoCos! It's been awhile since I posted.

I saw Ellen's blog post of last night that talks about the Utah photos from Jesse Heiman's myspace. IMHO, the photos are rather innocous. I think the building that she pointed out is part of the University of Utah or the Children's Hospital. Also, Jesse's myspace is full of references to a movie that was shot in Utah in November. It appears that he's just a regular actor - and many movies get shot in SLC (having lived there and having done lots of late night extra work).

As I type this though, my a little part of my brain keeps telling me "Duh. What aren't you seeing?" So, maybee there is something there... but most of me says no.

Ellen said...

Hi Olerica! I agree, most of those photos are very innocuous. I tried to pick photos that "stand out" from the rest, but there are 8-10 of them and to tell the truth, I just don't have the motivation or patience to try to use OpenStego on them. I guess my zeal for this ARG is dwindling...
I emailed Hoodlum last night while I was playing "nightowl" and about an hour later, they updated the code. I was so excited for awhile...oh well.
xxoo

Ellen said...

By the way, someone posted the email addy last night (can't remember where...I was everywhere last night!) for Hoodlum....maybe someone here knows?...anyway, if we all email them, maybe they'll step up the action...? What do you guys think?

maven said...

Good idea if we can get their email, Ellen!

They need to update DWY to at least give us an idea when testing will commence! We're willing to wait if we know when this will start!

maven said...

I agree with you, Memphish, that the new DI will be trying to course correct. Maybe they think if they can stop the Purge, they'll still be on the island and things will be quite a bit different.

Ellen said...

Found the email addy:

I'm rapidly becoming desperate. No, it's not the ARG. It's the combination of my rapidly growing 11 year old and his school's very specific dress code. . .

No ARG to take my mind off it even. . .off to brave the mall on the day before school starts. If I don't return. . .send someone through a pinhole for me. . .

Ellen said...

Lost2010--LOL! (gosh, I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore for a while!) My sympathies!

Someone at Dark UFO found this email!!

email-WARNING, POSSIBLE GAME SPOILER

Ellen said...

So, essentially, this email is scheduled to be released Friday...hmmm.

Capcom said...

Interesting Ellen! But if it means what it says, does that mean that we wil not see anything happen "in the next few days"? Ugh.

Leaving for TN tomorrow, guess I didn't miss anything except the fun non-stop chatting with you all . :-)

Ellen said...

Capcom! Hope your trip is good!
We DO miss chatting with you too!
Yeah---I think maybe they are playing with us, maybe we were meant to find that in answer to all the emails and phone calls they've received! (Not to mention the fact that we are following Jesse Heiman very closely). I have to admit, it does spark my interest to see even a little activity.

Ellen;
from your Hoodlum link under the News section:
http://cdn.emmys.tv/media/releases/2008/rel-pte60-mainjuly17.php
It talks about Find 815 being a finalist in the Emmy's.I signed up for news updates.
Are they the same Hoodlum that is making the new ARG?
Also in desperation, I double posted over at Dark UFO.And I stopped by the Library to pick up a copy of The Tempest.

Ellen said...

Hi takes a village!
Yes- same company that made 815 are the ones running this game too as revealed at Comic Con.
I'm just now starting to read "Of Mice and Men"...(my first book club reading adventure)! I'm saving that podcast until I finish the book...

Ange said...

*wave* commenting for e-mail.

Ellen said...

*waving* Hi Ange! How's England?
xxoo

memphish said...

Thank goodness someone has found something even if it's as lame as that email. I assume there will be a hack of that as well in the source code. I'm guessing maybe another youtube video post of the Chang video.

If this is seriously the pace of things to come, I'm going to stop paying attention. At this rate you'll be able to play the entire game in about 2 hours come January 2009 and may know no more than we know now. I hope I'm wrong, but an email that should have been sent before DWY went live sent 2 weeks after it went live is no way to run even an academic institution. Mittlewerk would never have stood for this. Not even Sam Thomas's mum would have stood for it.

Congested said...

LOL. Thank you!... for the great blog and podcast. Like I said I've always been a fan of The Lost Community... even going back to the TLE days. :)

Ellen said...

Yep, Memphish, you're right about the video. Same ol' same ol'....

Hi congested! thanks for stoppin' by!

maven said...

Waving back to Ange and Fenris!

I still hoping that once this thing gets going, we're going to have a lot of things to discuss besides a weekly test!

lost2010 said...

Is the e-mail a tremendous spoiler - I mean - I've waited this long - I wouldn't want to spoil whatever is waiting for me on Friday? :D

(I survived what I hope is my last school shopping trip before tomorrow.)

Tess315 said...

So somethings suppose to happen Friday?
I was going to suggest that Friday might be the day we get something. During the Find 815 game Friday was the day the site would update and we'd get our puzzle/hunt/video.

Ellen said...

It's just a tidbit concerning stuff that happened at Comic Con...not really too bad. It's just that some people want to stay completely spoiler-free and I respect that.
No activities or clues etc.
xxoo

lost2010 said...

I guess I'll hold off then. I've mainly been wondering when something will happen and if it's Friday, that means I can relax.

FYSB said...

Hi everyone! Happy belated anniversary to the Mavens!

I second (third? fourth? infinitith?) the thoughts on the pace of the game. It seems weird to hype ComicCon as the big launch and then do nothing with it.

I think the difference between this/Find 815 and TLE is that we had Javi develop the story for TLE...a real writer and a very creative man. He gave us characters...villians, heros, mysterious strangers and a plot and he got us involved. There was a story arc. We all were helping Rachel. She talked to us, both as Persephone and later as RB. Her puzzles had a purpose, hiding the information from Mittlewerk and leaving it to us to discover and put the pieces together. Rachel's videos were shot by Rachel, which helped us feel connected.

There's no story with Find 815, at least not in the classic sense. It was just a series of exercises. It reminded me of a children's puzzle book. "Sam needs to get to the island. Help him navigate his boat through the maze". Or "Sam has hidden 5 objects in his cabin. See if you can find them all!". I had no connection to Sam, I just sort of watched him on TV.

I think that's the problem with Hoodlum running this. They're an interactive marketing company (thanks for the link to their website by the way) and they're not in the business of telling stories.

maven said...

fyb: Thanks for the well wishes. And I think you nailed it on the head. We were so involved with TLE (some would say obsessed...especially Mr. Maven)! No so much with Find815. The puzzles were simple, but there was an underlying story to it. I'm hoping we get to peel away a few layers with DWY besides just taking tests.

Dennis said...

FYI, The email should be considered a spoiler for now. I have created a new post, but I won't post it until the email is actually sent.

Keep in mind that since the email hasn't been officially released yet that it might not be the final version, and the hidden source code may change.

Ellen said...

well said, Dennis!!
xxoo

Dennis said...

Well.. here's some interesting news... DWY pulled that 8/08 email page. It now directs you back to the main page. hmmm.

Also, I can't get the DWY site to load in Firefox... (I do have Flash 10 beta...). It's working in IE7...

maven said...

It worked for me in Firefox, Dennis.

Interesting that they took the email down. I wonder if they're monitoring some of the fan sites (especially Dark's)?

Ellen said...

Dennis,
Yep, redirects!
No problems with Firefox here, wonder what's causing your problem...full cache maybe?
xxoo

memphish said...

They may be monitoring, but I wish they'd responded to the complaints of no action rather than people finding something. :-)

Tess315 said...

I think the site must be buggy.
You guy are having trouble and now I can get in just fine.

Dennis said...

LOL. Maybe it's just random buggyness.

Because it works at home on Firefox (with Flash 9), must be because I have Flash 10 Beta at work...hmmm

So..... is it Friday yet?

Hey LoCo's! Well our computer when kablooey last night, but hubby thinks it's fixable. Nevertheless, I haven't had, nor will have computer access for a day or so. I'm on his computer from work right now. I figured that my lack of computer would trigger the start of the game, but I guess not! So basically we found an email that we will get at a future date telling us...basically nothing. Great. I'm excited. :P

I checked the link, and it's throwing up a server permission login box - the kind you get when you go to an unauthorized area of a website.

I would say this is their nice way of saying go away :)

Dennis: I guess this is their new security measures! LOL

Zort70 said...

No changes this morning, the security box is still up on the email page and I can't find a usable username and password either.

Just dropping in to say "hi" and mark for email.

Losing hope and interest in the game but you all are still cool.

Zort70 said...

barbaraj you are cool too just for being here.

Zort70 said...

Perhaps the game has been delayed because of the amount of people that have signed up. It could have been many more than they thought and more game playing capacity has had to be arranged.

FYSB said...

This made me laugh....this is the writeup Hoodlum has on their website touting their success with Find 815

"Find815 provoked an incredible response from the blog world, with users analysing every inch of the game for clues and sharing their findings. By the end of the online drama FIND815 had built a large and dedicated global fan base of registered users."

What they don't say is whether the response was positive or negative, just that it was large. And they say a large base of registered users, but they don't give a count, which they did provide for the other projects they highlight on the website.

maven said...

I still say, no matter how much we complain about this delay in starting or how lame Find815 was, it's still better than nothing. It's going to get us through this long hiatus. And the best thing: It's going to keep us all together, keeping in touch, keeping us thinking, interacting, learning more about each other, etc. during the next 5/6 months!

Ellen said...

Thank you Maven, you're right you know. I hadn't thought of it that way, but you are absolutely right. Anything that keeps us together and thinking, learning, etc. can't be bad. I know I'm glad we have this to look forward to. I'm just so thirsty for a LOST fix, it's hard to wait!!!
:D
xxoo

FYSB said...

You're absolutely right Maven, it's nice to have this community.

FYSB said...

And I apologize if my Hoodlum post came across as a complaint...the part that I thought was funny was the "analyzing every inch of the game for clues"

Ellen said...

fysb - not to worry, I found that rather funny too! I think they "embellished" their success in building the fan base too...
I did enjoy some of it, but it bored me to death. I long for the days of tle, that was just incredible to me.
But, I'll take what I can get!
xxoo

maven said...

NP with that post, Fysb! It is funny how PR manipulates the reality! LOL

I agree that there was nothing like TLE! There's nothing like "the first time"! LOL Anything after that would be sort of a let down. But, like I said above, at least we'll all stay together for the next several months!

Ellen said...

For sure, Maven! (Of course, I'll be at TLC probably until the very end no matter what...omg only 2 more seasons. How depressing.

Ellen said...

You know, I was just thinking...the reason they will probably never do another ARG like TLE is because there was really no way they could judge (at first) how many were playing or the demographics of the whole thing. It wasn't until the very last (the ubiquitous glyph hunt) that there was one "official" web site that you had to register on. Perhaps that was not the best way to judge the impact as far as marketing is concerned. I don't know, just a thought. It would be wonderful if this were sort of a combination of TLE and Find815, don't you think?

Black Swan said...

Hi everybody!

In regards to the Hoodlum PR... the fanbase was already there, duh...

This ARG (The Project) may be a very "controlled" experience, much like find815. The first TLC was all over the place with so many levels of difficulty that it made people work together. That's what made this community AND Hoodlum's fanbase, IMHO.

Ellen, hopefully that's what they're trying to do (a combination of both)

Ellen said...

Codysmom, totally agree that TLE definitely did build the fanbase to an all-time high IMO too. I'd be thrilled to have even a little bit of that "working together" type thing again. That was awesome!
I'm so glad I found TLEC blog early in the day! I wouldn't hang out anywhere else...
xxoo

Olerica said...

I'm with you, Ellen. I'm not sure how I found TLEC blog early and have never "bonded" anywhere else. I might not post much, or contribute anything of substance, but I sure count you all among my "internet friends" as my niece so innocently puts it.

memphish said...

Something to read and discuss while we wait.

Dennis said...

Something else to read and discuss while we wait :)

Dennis said...

memphish, here is what I said at Lostpedia:

The biggest problem I have with the way ARGs work is knowing WHEN to look for a clue. Clues that are hard to solve or even red herrings are fine, it gives people something to do, and you have a mission. It's when there is nothing to do - that's when there is a problem. It makes people wonder... am I missing something?

For example take this latest ARG - Are there clues/websites/etc out there that are we supposed to be looking for? Hidden emails? Or are we just waiting? How are we supposed to know?

I can understand if the game hasn't started yet due to technical difficulties, but otherwise... what's the hold up? A least give us some indication of whats going on. Right now we are just waiting... until Friday, when supposedly we'll be told to wait some more?

maven said...

Thanks for both those links, Memphish and Dennis.

In re to this coming ARG: If it's anything like Find815 (which is possible since it's the same company running it), then we know there is a very superficial game of solving puzzles and completing tasks. But we all know how crazy and involved we all got dissecting every little clue or possible site. Like anything you do, you only get out of it what you put into it.

That said, the points in the Lostpedia article are very valid. We do need someone to root for, and I'm not so sure about RuckusGuy yet. And we need a possible bad guy. Hopefully, we'll have one. And I also hope we have more than DWY as a site to work with.

I'm still very happy that at least we have something to keep us busy and together for this long hiatus...whatever it turns out to be.

Dennis said...

maven said... We do need someone to root for, and I'm not so sure about RuckusGuy yet. And we need a possible bad guy. Hopefully, we'll have one. And I also hope we have more than DWY as a site to work with.

Well, we have Hans Van Eeghan as the potential bad guy. RuckusGuy works for the good guy, but I don't know how helpful he will be if he's been kicked out of the DI already. Maybe he can disguise himself as a pizza delivery guy...

memphish said...

Good points Dennis. This lack of action and lack of info. about when to expect action is one of the big probs right now IMHO. Even though it was a bit cheesy, Find815s countdown clock would be useful right now.

I've given up even checking DWY. I'm leaving it to others to tell me when to bother to check again. I think it's pretty bad when you've made someone who likes LOST enough to blog about it and has so many websites bookmarked it's not countable feel like I'm wasting my time checking DWY by dragging things out for 2 weeks now.

The thing about a person to root for makes me think of the Goog's comment about Dan being not as attractive as Rachel and Sam. I thought that was really funny.

Tess315 said...

I didn't much care for the guy at the wiki blog comparing Hurley to Dan.
Hurley has a personality and is loveable I would follow him. Maybe even over Jack.
Dan I just can't warm up to him as a hero.
But we'll see.

Tess315 said...

TLE was fast paced and fun but it kind of left me behind alot of times.
Find 815 was fun but a little to predictable.
I'd like to see something somewhere in between.
Which alot of people here have already voiced that opinion.

memphish said...

Doc Arzt weighs in too.

maven said...

Thanks, Memphish, for alerting me to Doc's opinion. I posted over there. Basically I said that at Comic Con we were told that DWY would go live on the following Monday and then we came to a complete halt. We do need some sort of tidbit or explanation as to the delay. I'm still grateful for anything that keeps up occupied during the next 5 to 6 months!

Ellen said...

I wanted to weigh in over there too. I agree with you Maven...I just feel disrespected as a fan. They should at least send out info to let us know what the delay is all about. Two weeks is a very long time to wait for that info...they seem to be under the "curse" of many IT departments...start a project and run into bug after glitch after bug, then delay until everyone complains and then offer a "token" explanation. (as in "feed'em bs and keep'em in the dark") sorry...don't mean to complain, but we are a really good fan-base, historic even. Is this any way to treat us?
xxoo

TakesaVillage said...

Memphish,
I like what you said that we should at least have a countdown clock;like in Find 815.Maybe we will.
I mean Kelvin, and Desmond, (Radzinsky-not so much)had a count down clock in the hatch, and all they had to do was push the bloody button.
It has got to get better, right?
I agree, it may turn a lot of potential ARG'ers away if things don't start rolling soon.

Capcom said...

I agree with everyone here, TLE built the LOST ARG fanbase, which carried over onto Find815. Anyone who saw the first ARG happen (which includes us players, Verizon, Sprite, ABC, etc.) knew that already. Especially after the marketing report that Jeep put out after TLE (the one that included FYSB's post mentioning Jeep!). :-D

But, if I worked for Hoodlum, I'd say the same thing in my PR. Can't blame them for that. It just gives cause to chuckle.

I like that "Little ARG That Failed" article. That says it all: "To create a "grassroots feeling," you need to have a top-down corporation with wads of cash." The fun grassroots days are over...grassroots airshows, scifi cons, etc. :-(

I like the points made in the article about what ARG fans want/need also. Very good.

Good to be back home on the LoCo-net too now. No more palmetto bugs in the shower! And I agree Sayidsgirl, I'd follow Hurley over Jack any day!

It sure is frustrating, but I guess that we just have to be patient till we know for sure that they've messed it up. It is a free ride after all. But...it's not nice to take the candy away from the kids that they promised it to in the first place. :-p
